Bristol Airport adds three more European city flights to its expanding route network

February 19, 2015
By Robert Buckland

Three new routes to key European cities are to be introduced from Bristol Airport as it continues to expand its network on the Continent.

The flights to Paris, Düsseldorf and Nantes will be operated by bmi regional. The move comes as Ryanair prepares to add direct flights to cities such as Cologne and Stuttgart as part of its expansion at Bristol Airport.

bmi regional launches the Paris and Düsseldorf services on April 27 with Nantes flights starting on July 4, and operating throughout the summer months. Tickets went on sale this week.

Bristol Airport chief executive officer Robert Sinclair said: “These new flights will strengthen links to key markets in France and Germany for business and leisure passengers in the South West.

“Building on bmi regional’s existing services, these new destinations further enhance the airline’s growing base at Bristol Airport.

“Direct flights to European cities such as Paris, Düsseldorf and Nantes provide passengers with a convenient local alternative to the London airports, saving them time and money in the process, and bmi regional’s reputation for reliability and service will make this option even more attractive.

“The double-daily weekday service to the French capital’s major airport, Paris Charles de Gaulle, adds capacity to another major global hub and makes a same day return possible for business passengers.”

bmi regional CEO Cathal O’Connell added: “Bristol is already a substantial hub for the airline, allowing us to service some of Europe’s most exciting business and leisure destinations.

“Flying twice a day to Paris means that business travellers can now have a full day of business in the French capital, rather than having to overnight. Düsseldorf is the centre of the Rhine-Ruhr and an international business and financial centre, renowned for its fashion and trade fairs, and bmi regional the only airline to connect businesses in the South West directly to the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia.

“Nantes is the perfect place for a weekend break, or a holiday among the world famous vineyards and chateaux.”

The new routes have been welcomed by business groups. James Durie, executive director of Bristol Chamber of Commerce at Business West, said: “Adding these three new bmi regional routes from Bristol Airport gives business across our region and beyond better connections to two of our most important trade markets.

“In the South West, we have 5,000 companies who are interested in or already exporting to France and Germany and Bristol Airport also serves businesses from areas beyond such as South Wales. With Bristol as 2015 European Green Capital, the international spotlight is increasingly on us and we very much welcome this investment by bmi regional giving us links to these European cities.

“These new links will help stimulate our visitor economy and other investment into Bristol and the South West.”

Bristol-Paris flights will operate six days a week with two flights a day Monday to Friday, and one flight on Sunday. Flights will depart Bristol at 07.20 and 13:50 five days a week, and 19:10 on Sunday. The return flight from Paris will be at 11:20 and 16:40 Monday to Friday and at 21:55 on Sunday, arriving back in Bristol at 22:10.

Bristol-Düsseldorf will operate six times a week, Sunday to Friday, departing Bristol at 17:25 Monday to Friday, and arriving in Düsseldorf at 19:50. The return flight will depart at 20:20 from Düsseldorf to Bristol, arriving back in Bristol at 20:55. On Sundays, the flight will depart Bristol at 15:00, arriving in Düsseldorf at 17:25. The Sunday return flight will depart Düsseldorf at 17:55, arriving back in Bristol at 18:30.

Bristol – Nantes will operate twice per week on Tuesday and Saturday departing Bristol on Tuesdays at 12:20, and arriving in Nantes at 14:30. The return flight will depart Nantes at 15:00, arriving back in Bristol at 15:10. On Saturdays, the flight will depart Bristol at 15:30, arriving in Nantes at 17:40. The Saturday return flight will depart Nantes at 18:10, arriving back in Bristol at 18:20. The first Nantes flight takes place on 4 July 2015, with the final flight on 12 September.

Fares from Bristol to Paris start at £69 one way, including all taxes. Fares to Düsseldorf and Nantes from Bristol start from £79 one way, including all taxes.

I've added the link to this report and edited the report a bit that you reproduced in full to avoid copyright issues - the link at the top will allow anyone interested access to the full article. Much of the article is based on the airport/airline press release so I've left those parts untouched. Many thanks.

No problem and thank you for your response. It's just that some organisations can be a bit precious if they think that their copyright is infringed. I usually reproduce a couple of short paragraphs to give the flavour of an article and provide a link to the full one. This is usually deemed acceptable practice.

BRS often puts out a press release on its website when some noteworthy event occurs as it did with bmi regional's expansion. Lazy journals often reproduce the press release in full without alteration or further comment - the Bristol Post sometimes does this. With such press releases there would be no problem in copying the entire release (the airport wants to reach as many readers anyway to spread its news, which will always be positive - airports and airlines rarely if ever publish bad news as press releases). When I reproduce full BRS press releases on this website I also add the link out of courtesy.

It's always permissible to write a precis in your own words of what an article contains, and of course to comment on the article if you want to.

Munich increasing to three times a day and Aberdeen now being operated twice a day with a abz based aircraft and once with a brs aircraft

Re Aberdeen, Monday and Tuesday only showing 2 x daily on the bmir booking engine, with Wednesday, Thursday, Friday at 3 x daily. Saturday remains no service and Sunday remains single daily. Overall, this is a slight reduction as originally the 3 x daily service was to run Monday to Friday.

Re Munich, it's very strange because last night they were showing 3 daily rotations on weekdays albeit the bmir website narrative continued to speak of 2 x daily.

I've just checked again and it's back to 2 x daily in the week, well almost.

Mondays
Dep MUC 0645, arr BRS 0745
Dep BRS 1205, arr BRS 1710

Tuesdays to Fridays
Dep BRS 0630, arr BRS 1120

Saturdays

Sundays

Monday morning is unbalanced with half a rotation coming in from MUC. Saturday timings indicate a MUC-based aircraft.

Plus a third weekly Milan service on Sundays

From 24 May, good news.

I wasn't hallucinating last night then when I saw Munich as three times a day. Strange how it goes on sale then is withdrawn. I wonder if this is the finished timetable or is there more to come

There is also a fourth weekly Milan service available on the website - now m, f, sa and su. I hope I hadn't just dreamt that

It's

4 weekly on MXP

2 daily MUC . MUC ops crewed ex BRS . New early morning BRSMUC offers great connectivity .

Early morning Monday arrival from MUC is aircraft /crew related.

I saw it last night too with three different series of flight numbers or at least I thought I did. Perhaps we're on the same thing. :drinks: We'd better keep it quiet or they'll all want some.

all you lot having too many tipples at night .
looking at what bmr are doing with routes, to me it mirrors a very similar series as brymon used to do.i dont have a old brymon route, or timings sheet to compare

it used to work with brymon, with making a profit,so to me bmr will be making one with what they are doing.

Yes, when BACon (previously BACx and Brymon) was effectively closed down at BRS in 2007 when Flybe took over the airline, BACon's route network from BRS was Frankfurt, Munich, Dusseldorf, Paris Cdg, Milan Malpensa, Zurich, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

All but Zurich, Edinburgh and Glasgow will now be operated by bmir. EDI and GLA won't be back although for several years the BA franchise operated them in competition with easyJet, with as many as eight daily rotations to both Scottish cities once operated across both airlines.

It was also only after BACon pulled out of the Cdg route that easyJet came onto the route for the first time. So only Zurich is missing from the BACon stable. It might be a possibility. Helvetic built up the BRS-ZRH route to a monthly average of 50-65 passengers per flight in summer, figures that would more than fill bmir's aircraft.

Incidentally, Flybe said its axed BACon BRS routes were loss-making which was something that was disputed by the BRS management a year or so later in evidence to a competition issues enquiry re BRS, CWL and EXT.

There has been been some changes to the summer schedule . Hamburg has been reduced to once daily six days a week , Aberdeen reduced to twice daily and Munich has a second flight on Sundays

Services to Aberdeen are being hit hard by the low oil price. Flights to Aberdeen are being reduced from a number of airports.

i see next saturday on mayfly as follows.
bmir 9490 destination GOA.
i hope this is not the india one, all that way in a cramped cabin, and would think many fuel stops.any one any ideas?.

GOA is the IATA code for Genoa, Italy. That's a bit more reasonable on a small Embraer jet.

bmir seems to be getting quite a lot of charters over and above the football and rugby teams at weekends. I noted an Oslo arrival in the week, although it may have been a positioning flight.

Germany

The DUS rotation didn't seem to operate yesterday (Friday 1st May). I presume this was because it was a national holiday in Germany (May Day), although the 3 x daily FRA, 2 x daily MUC and daily HAM all appeared to operate.

Looking ahead, the bmir booking website shows only the evening rotation for the FRA on Thursday 14 May and Friday 15 May.

14 May is apparently another national holiday (Ascension Day) in Germany yet all the DUS, MUC and HAM rotations on 14 and 15 May are advertised as bookable.

If the FRA has been reduced on these two days because of the national holiday on one of them, one wonders about interlining passengers via the LH code share.

It's possible of course that the other four sectors on 14 and 15 May are fully booked already but this does seem unlikely unless there is some event or reason why this should be so.

Does anyone know why these rotations are not shown as bookable?

Aircraft utilisation

The ER3 was used on the 2 x daily HAM and the relatively short-lived third ABZ rotation.

Now that HAM is down to daily (with some eye-watering fares over the next couple of weeks - usually over £200 sometimes £300 per sector) and ABZ no more than 2 x daily, I wonder what the ER3 does apart from its evening visit to HAM six days a week.

Mayfly shows all other routes, including the Airbus corporate shuttle and the Brussels Airlines contracts, as ER4.

New routes

On 27 April bmi regional commenced BRS-DUS and BRS-CDG.

CDG competes with easyJet so it's not possible to ascertain how bmi regional contributed. There were about 900 more passengers on the route this April than April 2014 when easyJet was alone.

This April easyJet used more 320s than last year.

DUS carried 135 passengers on the four rotations it operated in April, giving an average load of just under 17, a load factor of just over 34%. It's early days and the figures are for an extremely short period. It will be interesting to see how Flybe's CWL-DUS performs when it comes on stream. When I looked recently the CWL fares were much cheaper than those from BRS.

I know BRS and CWL airports are at the opposite end of the country to LBA but as they're similar sized regional airports so it's probably worth comparing them in this instance.

At LBA Jet2.com flies to DUS six times weekly and during March of this year a total of 4310 passengers were carried. I make that an average of 80 passengers per flight based on a Monday to Friday and a Sunday service. (The figure total was derived by dividing the passenger total by the 54 flights which included both the inbound and outbound passengers.)

Jet2 isn't the cheapest of operators but they're significantly cheaper than BMI Regional so perhaps more comparable with Flybe. A possible indication of how the Flybe route might perform at CWL once they are established there?

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
