Bristol-Aberdeen

The newly independent bmiregional will commence its new 2 x daily BRS-ABZ route from tomorrow using its BRS-based ERJ145 aircraft.

It will be up against Easterns' 2 x daily BRS-ABZ via LBA with Saab 2000 aircraft.

Bristol-Corsica summer 2013

Bastia returns to the Bristol network from 23 June 2013 with a weekly charter to that airport in Corsica operated by bmi regional ERJ 145s. The service is on behalf of Corsican Holidays and will operate fro 13 weeks on Sundays.

Bastia was last served in the summers of 2009 and 2010 by easyJet and before that there were weekly summer charters to Bastia on behalf of Corsican Places and Holiday Options for a number of years, with the last one operating in 2007. I seem to remember SNBrussels (as it then was) with ARJs operating the charter on behalf of the tour companies in at least one the seasons that it operated.

I have just seen on the Bristol airport website bmi regional have announced further expansion for BRS!!

BRS-HAM (Hamburg) 5 x a week starting 11/02/13 increasing x 12 a week from 08/04/13

BRS-FRA (Frankfurt) 6 x a week will commence in late March 2013.

Well done Bristol!!!! :drinks:

“We are also reviewing other opportunities with the team at Bristol Airport and hope to announce additional routes in the new year.”

Bristol - Frankfurt and hamburg.

Announced today on the BRS website with HAM starting 5 times weekly from February increasing to 12 times weekly from April and FRA 6 time weekly from March.

Excellent news for the airport and rumoured that bmi regional would be announcing a German route (or two) for the past few weeks. However, there is many a slip between rumour and actuality.

FRA was operated for 13 months by LH (Eurowings) until the end of April 2009 during which time it carried just under 100,000 passengers. The equipment then was Bae 146-300 aircraft initially 3 x daily - perhaps too many seats then for a new route even though it did feed into LH's huge worldwide network. Before that the BA franchises operated BRS-FRA for nearly a decade at up to 2 x daily with E145 aircraft.

HAM was last operated in 2009 by OLT as a sort of inhouse aviation service that transferred from Filton in the hope of picking up 'general public' passengers to augment the aviation industry travellers.

Before that easyJet flew BRS-HAM in 2005-2006. It was one of the few easyJet routes from BRS that struggled a bit for passengers though loads weren't disastrous.

On both HAM and FRA the bmi regional aircraft might be a better size albeit there is no feeding into long haul traffic at FRA so far as I know.

Hamburg and Bristol have important business links with Airbus and Imperial Tobacco.

Excellent news, well done everyone involved :s_thumbsup I find it really hard to express just how happy this makes me. Hope their fares will be slightly more reasonable than OLT's though. Now all that's missing is a route to Munich.

There seems every reason from the press release to believe that further routes will be announced for 2013.

Although FRA and HAM had been rumoured as being in the frame I've not heard any other strong route rumour contenders.

I wonder about Seville with its Airbus connections - this seems to be partly the raison d'etre for HAM - which was flown in summer by Ryanair until this year. Loads were pretty good (usually above 80% load factors) though not as high as most of the Polish and other FR routes from BRS to the former Soviet Bloc countries.

Of course, lfs in themselves don't tell outsiders how profitable a route is but at least FR showed a market exists, albeit bmi regional is not as well-known but it does operate much smalleraircraft. Would there be enough traffic for a year-round service to Seville though?

BRS is still light on Scandinavia. Only the recently re-introduced easyJet service to Copenhagen serves that neck of the woods. In 2007 and 2008 SAS had loads that they said exceeded their expectations on summer seasons to Stockholm and Oslo. They were axed following the airline's severe cost-cutting measures which saw numerous SAS routes removed as the airline downsized substantially.

In the BACitiExpress/BAConnect days BRS had double-daily routes to FRA and daily routes to MUC and DUS as well as to other European cities now served by other airlines so MUC could be a contender.

Looking at next week's Mayfly which shows the Airbus Shuttle rotations operated by Bmi Regional on weekdays together with the existing BMR Aberdeen rotations, there will be a need for four aircraft at times at BRS from next month when the initial Hamburg service comes into operation, though this is not to say they will all be based at BRS.

This is on the assumptioon that next week's Shuttle programme is replicated each week. That may or may not be the case - I don't know.

On some days the Shuttle seems to need two aircraft to operate parts of its programme, yet Friday's last arrival is at 0800 with no departures after that. Even then there appear to be some unbalanced rotations so perhaps Mayfly is not entirely accurate about it all. The Shuttle aircraft are shown on Mayfly as E145s which is the type used on the ABZ service. The Hamburg and Frankfurt routes (the latter starts in April) seem to be E135 routes.

For what it's worth the timetable would be as follows from February assuming the Shuttle programme remains as next week.

Are there any provisional timings for the Air Mistral flight? Someone on another forum was enquiring.

[textarea]bmi regional takes off with new Bristol to Hamburg route

Inaugural flight marks airline’s continued network expansion into mainland Europe.

bmi regional, the UK’s most punctual airline, will today (Monday, February 11th) welcome a delegation of business leaders from across South West and South Wales on the inaugural flight of the new Bristol to Hamburg route.

With thousands of bookings made since the route was announced earlier this year, the significant interest underlines the demand for the service and consolidates bmi regional’s position at Bristol following the introduction of other direct services from the city to Aberdeen and Frankfurt.

The airline will take guests to meet their counterparts in Hamburg to discuss strengthening business and tourism links between the two cities. The delegation will also be given a guided tour of the German city before returning tomorrow evening.

bmi regional is initially flying jet-operated flights five days a week between Bristol and Hamburg, increasing to 12 per week from April 8th. The arrival of the first flight will be marked with a water arch at Hamburg Airport.

Cathal O’Connell, Chief Executive, bmi regional said: “As an organisation we are committed to developing markets in areas where our customers want to travel. The launch of this new service to Hamburg and, from next month, to Frankfurt, is a continuation of our promise to serve key economic and transport hubs to multiple destinations across Europe.

“Hamburg is a key location for several major companies in the South West, such as Airbus and Imperial Tobacco. Beyond the exciting routes we have already committed to, we are currently reviewing other opportunities with the team at Bristol Airport and hope to announce additional routes in the months ahead.”

Fares on the Bristol to Hamburg, and Bristol to Frankfurt route which commences in late March, start as low as £59.99 one way.

Robert Sinclair, Chief Executive Officer at Bristol Airport, said: “The commencement of a Hamburg service, with daily flights to Frankfurt to follow in April, connects the South West and South Wales with these major German cities. Both are important business centres and the new routes are already being well supported by companies across the region keen to take advantage of the time and cost savings to be made when using their closest major airport.

“Working with airline partners to extend the route network to key business destinations is part of our overall commitment to providing vital connectivity to the regional economy.”

Hamburg is a major transport hub in Northern Germany and one of the most affluent cities in Europe. The city is a major tourist destination for both domestic and overseas visitors. Situated just five miles from the city centre, the international airport at Hamburg is the fifth biggest airport in Germany and the oldest in the country, having been established in 1912.

Frankfurt is the financial and transport centre of Germany and the largest financial centre in continental Europe. Its airport is the third busiest in Europe, behind London Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gaulle and the ninth busiest worldwide.[/textarea]

Above is a BRS press release so I have reproduced it in full.

Optimistic noises about the bookings and the airline's CEO repeated an earlier remark that they hope to announce 'additional routes in the months ahead' at BRS.

Many thanks for the advanced information, conns757.

[textarea]bmi regional launches another 3 new European routes from Bristol Airport

bmi regional, the UK’s most punctual airline announced the launch of three new European routes from Bristol Airport. The airline is continuing to expand its European network, with the launch of flights from Bristol to Munich, Milan and Hannover, today the 13 of February 2013.

Cathal O’Connell, chief executive, bmi regional said: “The launch of these routes to Munich, Milan and Hannover is a continuation of bmi regional’s promise to serve key economic and tourism hubs in Europe from the UK. We are positioning bmi regional for real growth in Bristol and the southwest, having already launched three routes from Bristol before Christmas to Aberdeen, Frankfurt and Hamburg. These routes have gained real momentum, and, as a result, we are doubling our frequency on the Frankfurt route to twice a day.

“bmi regional’s strategy is to choose destinations with both business and leisure customer demand. Munich, Milan and Hannover are major centres for technology and manufacturing. In addition, these cities boast some of the world’s most famous cultural, sport and tourism attractions. With fares starting from £59 each way, we also expect to see a boost in tourism to Bristol and the South West, said O’Connell.

Non-stop flights to Munich, Milan and Hannover from Bristol commence Monday 13th May 2013 with six flights on each route per week. The Bristol-Frankfurt schedule changes to twice a day on the same day.

• Munich is the capital of Bavaria, and the third largest city in Germany. It is famous for its historic architecture, university and artistic culture, as well as being the headquarters of BMW. The city’s location beside the Alps, its famous museum and its annual Oktoberfest beer celebration ensures that Munich has a huge leisure tourism business.

• Milan is the second largest city in Italy and is Italy’s economic and financial heart. Milan is the main industrial, commercial and financial centre of Italy, host to the Italian Stock Exchange and the headquarters of Italy’s largest banks and companies. Milan is also a sporting, fashion and cultural centre, with world famous attractions such as La Scala Opera, Milan Fashion Week, football teams and the Monza F1 race track. Milan is also within easy reach of the Alps and the Italian lakes.

• Hanover is a major business centre of northern Germany, and is the capital of the German federal state of Lower Saxony. It hosts trade fairs such as the Hanover Fair and CeBIT every year, and is a major European transport rail and road hub. It also has second largest Oktoberfest in the world.[/textarea]

With the Aberdeen and Hamburg routes already operating (and the latter to go double daily in the spring), Frankfurth has now been increased to 2 x daily together with new routes to Hannover, Munich and Milan. With the airline also operating up to nine daily flights for the Airbus corporate shuttle to/from Toulouse and Hawarden bmi regional aircraft will be a familiar sight at BRS.

It will be almost like BAConnect again when that airline had five ERJ145s based at BRS.

Talking of which, Milan Malpensa, Munich and Frankfurt were all operated by BACon until Flybe took over that airline in 2007 and axed nearly all its BRS routes, something about which the BRS management expressed its surprise in evidence to a Competition Commission enquiry the following year.

Since then easyJet has tried MXP against Ryanair's Bergamo, both daily at one point before the Orange ceased its route, whereupon Ryanair reduced its frequency which it still operates.

LH operated FRA for 13 months in 2008-2009 and carried nearly 100,000 passengers but axed it despite apparently being ahead of the airline's business plan for it. Many believe the airline feared that routes to FRA from LHR, BHX and BRS could not be sustained as the recession began to bite deeply in 2009 so the BRS route - the newest and the least busy of the three - was the one that disappeared.

Hamburg has Airbus connections with Bristol. It used to be operated by OLT, mainly for the industry but open to the public as well, and easyJet also tried it around 2005 but it could not sustain enough passengers to justify a 150-seater.

Hannover is one of Bristol's twin cities (the first UK-German city to be twinned after WW2 - in 1947) but has never featured before in the BRS route network. Calls for a route are made from time to time from some quarters in Bristol so now they've got it they must use it.

The BRS management's desire to increase its German coverage has come to fruition spectacularly: from just one route (easyJet to Berlin), it will soon have five.

The other target area is Scandinavia where easyJet's Copenhagen service is the sole presence. Before it scaled back its size dramatically because of financial problems a few years ago SAS operated Boeing jets to both Oslo and Stockholm, both at several times per week summer operations which were reportedly very successful.

Maybe that might be the next growth area.

There must be optimism that bmi regional aircraft are the appropriate size for the BRS routes it flies/will fly. Encouraging noises have been made about bookings for the routes announced in December.

I suspect one or two people at the airport have been working very hard - but of course they always do. :hatsoff:

Excellent news! Happy to see the new Munich link, I hope it performs well. Munich is also the second-biggest financial centre after Frankfurt btw (Allianz HQ etc.), and of course Germany's second hub airport. Shame they don't seem to have interlining agreements with LH/*A any more.

The new Hannover link is quite a surprise, given its relative proximity to Hamburg, and the area's much smaller population. I wonder what the rationale was for that, and if there's any corporate backing. It's only marginally more convenient for Airbus's Bremen base. There's a lot of IT companies in the region though, but I would never have expected to see flights to Hannover before e.g. Dusseldorf/Cologne or so, which has a 12m metro area.

I noticed that the airport was quite quick to add Hannover to the destination list (originally it even said 'up to two flights a day'), but still haven't added Munich.

Hannover is the surprise one. As I posted previously it's one of Bristol's twin cities but whether that in itself will contribute much is doubtful.

Ryanair served another twin, Porto, for a couple of years but, despite generally good to very good loads, it was eventually axed. Presumably the yield was not to Ryanair's taste.

easyJet serves yet another twin city, Bordeaux, in summer and has done so for several years. Now, if a route could be started to yet another twin city, Guangzhou (previously known as Canton)............................................ :shok:

Back to bmi regional, my alter ego posted in an another forum in answer to someone's question, and I have reproduced part below.

Taking two dates in May, the bmi regional booking engine shows these timings: times shown are departure and return at BRS.

0650-1030 Frankfurt
0700-1020 Aberdeen
0700-1045 Hamburg
1130-1610 Milan
1200-1540 Hannover
1215-1710 Munich
1640-2000 Aberdeen
1645-2045 Frankfurt
1650-2035 Hamburg

That clearly shows three aircraft though the inbound MUC aircraft obviously won't be able to operate any of the three late afternoon departures (to ABZ, FRA and HAM).

That suggests it will in some way link into the Airbus corporate shuttle network and the said network will provide one of the three late afternoon departures.

The snag is the shuttle timetable as currently constituted doesn't suggest a solution and, anyway, it varies slightly from day to day.

There are between eight and nine shuttle flights on most weekdays (to/from Toulouse and Hawarden) with a 0630 departure to Toulouse a constant and no inbound is shown before it departs.

This strongly suggests a base of at least four aircraft and possibly five.

.

Hamburg

This route commenced on 11 February this year, initially 5 x weekly, rising to 12 x weekly from April.

CAA stats show that 522 passengers used the service in February, giving an average load of 18.6.

For February and a new route this seems reasonable. I'm not sure if the aircraft is an E135 or 145.
