Hi,
just curious, when arriving back from holiday in Egypt, on an Easyjet flight coming into Stansted, late at night at the beginning of October, we experienced an aborted landing. That is that on touch down, the pilot went to full thrust and took off again. Landing again, more successfully about 15 minutes later.

There was no explanation for this, except that this was normal procedure. Got me thinking, it would be nice to know why, and if we were in any danger that night.

Could anyone tell me if there are any records kept, and if so, have the public an right to know of any events that took place about a particular flight.

I don't know why your aircraft executed a go-around but it this link provides the main reasons why aircraft carry-out the manoeuvre.

Basically it doesn't have to be because of an aircraft or ground vehicle on the runway. The pilot can decide to carry out a go-around even if he has the slightest doubt about the approach. It is possible the decision was made late because of wind shear whereby the aircraft suffers from a loss or gain of air-speed.

Could be any number of reasons: eg
previous landing aircraft not cleared runway?
previous take off aircraft took longer to climb?
I wouldn't worry about it, as you were told "normal procedure"

not particularly worried about it, as I am still here to "tell the tale", so to speak. And I know there was probably a perfectly good reason for going around, I would just like to know what the reason was.

I'm sure they must keep records and logs for all flights, in case there are lessons to be learnt, or any reference to a particular event in time, maybe in a court case brought or disciplinary procedure. I just wanted to know what happened in my flight.

If you are really intent on trying to find out the reason you could try writing to the airline concerned or even to the Civil Aviation Authority but I don't know wether you'd get a reply that satisfied you.

Go arounds are far more common than many people might think. Sometimes the pilot will explain the reason, perhaps usually, but if it's technical it might confuse or even worry some passengers (if for example there was a laggardly departing aircraft taking off ahead) and others would merely yawn and think what's he going on about?

The last go around I experienced was with easyJet going into Newcastle Airport when just before landing the power came back on and we began climbing. Almost immediately the captain explained that a large flock of birds had just arrived at the end of the runway and that we would take a short aerial tour of Newcastle whilst the feathered beings were being dispersed.

A similar thing happened to me on approach to NCL about 7 years ago in a Jet2 B733. At about 200ft, full power came on and we had an aerial tour of Newastle, only problem - it was dark!

I’m hoping I don’t have to sit and wait 2 hours for the desk to open and be able to drop it as soon as I arrive
Any help appreciated

Although I have never used Stansted airport, most airports where an airline has a large operation offer the ability to check-in hold luggage earlier than the standard two hours on a short haul scheduled flight. It's worth noting If your flight is one of the first flights of the day, it is unlikely you will be able to bag drop prior to the two hour check-in period.

Why are you arriving so early?
I think it's 3hrs the earliest you can drop off a bag...I have travelled through Stansted around 6 times over the last year and have never waited for more than 30 mins between dropping a case off and getting through security.
