Cardiff Airport construction work to begin in October

Construction work on the redevelopment of Cardiff Airport's terminal building will get underway in October, airport chiefs have confirmed.

The front of the airport and its approach areas will be modernised, while the terminal's arrivals and departures halls will be linked through a new common area.

It is hoped that redevelopment work will be completed by summer next year, in time for Wales' hosting of the Ryder Cup in 2010.

As part of the redevelopment, Cardiff International Airport's name has been changed to Cardiff Airport and Maes Awyr Caerdydd.

Patrick Duffy, Cardiff Airport's managing director, said that the airport would benefit from a "more discerning image domestically and internationally".

"These plans demonstrate the airport's commitment to being part of a wider strategy for Wales," he said.

"We want to see our facilities being used by more airlines offering more choice to both Welsh patrons and visitors to Wales."

Cardiff Airport is the only airport in Wales that operates scheduled international flights and is served by scheduled airlines, cheap flights carriers and business and charter carriers.

I don't think this has been mentioned on here. This article dates back to the beginning of the month but it indicates that work on the terminal is to start in October.

Yes it is good that they are starting this, and a step toward attracting more airlines to the airport. Hopefully this will be a stepping stone towards getting the access road sorted as well

I would say that anytimes a good time to be doing construction right now.

October 09 is the best time to start this work, my guess is that if the work does overrun then it will be mainly small stuff and not major work.

Does anyone know where we could possibly locate the details of the developments other than the brief descirption as been seen on the airport website.

There might be some details in 'Construction News' but other than that you might be best asking around to find out who is lined up to carry out the proposed work. The contractor may well have some details on their website.

£5m redesign plans for Cardiff airport's terminal

The design of the terminal is aimed at improving the airport's overall image

Cardiff Airport has revealed plans to develop its terminal building.

The £5m redesign, part of the airport's wider £15m investment strategy, has reached the planning stage and work could start later this year.

Plans have been drawn up to extend the front of the terminal, link the arrivals and departures halls, and provide new food and retail services.

Managing director Patrick Duffy said he wanted to "present a modern statement for the region" and boost business.

As part of the work the security control point to access the departures lounge will relocated to the first floor, above the existing arrivals hall, the airport said.

The approach area in front of the terminal building will also be redesigned and landscaped.

We are demonstrating our commitment at Cardiff Airport despite market conditions and we call on others, particularly the Welsh Assembly Government to now do their bit

Patrick Duffy, Cardiff Airport managing director
The contemporary design of the development will both improve the overall image of the airport and provide a backdrop to continue delivering high standards of customer service for passengers, explained Mr Duffy.

All changes would be in line with more stringent security regulations, he added.

"Our intention is to enhance and expand the airport terminal, present a modern statement for the region and increase our commercial activities," said Mr Duffy, who pointed out that the re-jig would come at a time when recession has hit air traffic hard.

The plans will go forward to Vale of Glamorgan Council.

Mr Duffy added: "The ultimate drivers of air traffic growth for Cardiff Airport - both inbound and outbound - will be airlines responding to increased economic performance in south Wales and increased visibility of Wales internationally.

'Regional plan'

"These are issues which can only be addressed as part of wider economic policy and industrial development in Wales.

"We are demonstrating our commitment at Cardiff Airport despite market conditions and we call on others, particularly the Welsh Assembly Government to now do their bit."

Mr Duffy said the Welsh public needed to realise that the development of the terminal alone would not actually increase the demand for airlines operating in south Wales.

The departures lounge will move to the floor above the arrivals hall.
"It does not create new routes and it does not create new tourism," he said. "These issues have to be tackled as part of a regional plan.

"Cardiff Airport has suggested solutions to some of these issues and trusts that government agencies will make their contribution as other regions of the UK have done so for many years."

Other improvements to the airport terminal were completed in 2009 including the refurbishment of the east pier, covering departure gates 3-10.

The first floor of the main terminal building was also refurbished.

In July 2009 Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones announced that a scheme to improve road access to the airport was being dropped.

As an alternative, he said the assembly government would investigate a half-hourly bus express bus service from Cardiff city centre to the airport, more frequent train services and improved safety on the A4266 (Five Mile Road).

The news was criticised as "economic lunacy" by Vale of Glamorgan MP John Smith.

Does anyone know if this is the same work that was supposed to start last October or is it a new development?

This Dev looks new and a lot better than the previous one.

[textarea]Cardiff Airport terminal expansion plans approved

A multi-million-pound extension to the terminal at Cardiff Airport has been approved by councillors. Work on the project to improve the appearance of the airport will begin later this year with approval of the plans by Vale of Glamorgan councillors coming as plans for a dedicated bus service to the airport were also announced.

The £5m terminal improvement scheme will see the arrivals and departures halls linked into one large area, with new food and retail premises, and the building will get a 'fresh contemporary design' upgrade. The first floor of the terminal will become ‘airside’ as the security control point to access the departures lounge is relocated to the first floor. The approach area in front of the terminal building will also be redesigned.

Meanwhile, Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones has approved the specification for a dedicated airport express bus service. The new limited-stop service will operate between Cardiff Airport and the city centre.

The Wales aviation website has been pushing hard for a dedicated airport bus but I'm not sure what this decision means as to its funding.

Will WAG (Welsh Assembly Government) pay for the entire service or just a grant towards it I wonder.

Hi Local. I don't know how the bus link will be funded, but it is a step in the right direction having this link. They need to advertise it well though otherwise it won't get used and it'll be cut.

I noticed though that there was no mention of extra space for check-in, or did I miss it?

Hello Em,

I wondered about the WAG's attitude to supporting a dedicated coach given that they spent £19 million several years ago reopening the Vale of Glamorgan railway line partly in order to service CWL via the Rhoose Halt, albeit it still needs a short bus link to the terminal.

I don't think there will ever be through trains from further afield to the Halt and even local ones are not likely to see much increase on two an hour.

I think a much better option would be along the lines of the Bristol Flyer which links into the rail system at Temple Meads and allows through tickets from rail stations around the country, as well as on National Express and local bus services.

It's going at ten minute intervals from next month.

Trouble is Bristol Airport underwrites the cost of their Flyer, something the CWL owners won't or can't do.

Nevertheless, it is a step in the right direction, as you say, but more detail would be very useful.

I'm not sure about extra check-ins. £5 million sounds a lot of money but in reality it doesn't buy that much in terms of improving infrastructure at an airport.

Departures Area

Debra Barber, CWL MD, made this comment in this week's airport press release about April's passenger numbers - see CWL CAA Stats thread.

“In May we’ll also be unveiling our new-look departures area and officially opening Caffè Ritazza and the Beer House airside catering facilities. We remain committed to delivering an enjoyable customer experience and proudly fly the flag for Wales every day of the year.”

I'd be interested to hear from anyone passing through after the new facility is opened as to their impressions.

The Beer house looks very good, someone put a picture up on Twitter not so long ago( credit @wardnicholson) , looks refreshed for sure, the Twitter page of the airport have been trying to get a singer and a freelance journalist in the last few days - linked to the relaunch of the departure area perhaps...

Looking great Craig. More choice of destinations and retail offerings from #Cardiff will surely increase the airports popularity with customers. Lets hope it acts as a catalyst.

Just read on another forum that the closed Sky Plaza hotel is being renovated and may be reopening under the name The Celtic International. If this is true it does show confidence that the airport is growing for someone to invest in reopening a hotel on the approach road to the airport.

How many hotels are there at CWL now?

It would make it three in total. The travelodge isn't too far away but they don't provide shuttle service to the airport.

I wonder if this hotel will?

Think it would have to. Also they could offer parking for guests to cover part of the cost as well. Is the car park next door included or a separate site?

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
