If Plymouth reopened then it would probably be just a general aviation airport. I can't see any airlines serving it not with BE up the road in NQY and EXT and I can't see there being a big enough demand for a TOM base or even KLM 2 daily.

Ply runway both directions is part grass,so the likes of klm or flybe operating out of there is a no no,not only that their aircrafts are too big.

WE seem to have slipped the ply thread onto Newquay thread. There is a ply thread but might have to search for it.

I've reopened the PLH thread if anyone wants to comment further on that airport.

CAA Stats July 2017

61,783 passengers handled in the month, up 23.3% on July 2016. Atms up 17.3%.

Rolling 12-month total 426,426, up 37.2%.

The growth seems unstoppable at the moment!

The airport is a real surprise package as the catchment area is fairly large but not heavily populated.

That's great news for NQY!

It's also incredibly popular with tourists and isn't easy to get to from most of the UK. If you look at Flybe's routes they get flights from most of their bases and some non bases.

There doesn't seem much doubt that 2017 will be the airport's best ever year for passenger numbers.

Passenger numbers were increasing rapidly in the early years of this century and reached a record 431,000 in 2008. By 2012 the recession had seen this figure drop to 166,000. The test now will be to continue with this momentum next year which will require some additional rotations on existing routes and/or new destinations.

Off the back of this years great results so far, NQY airport (or CAN) as they are now using is heading off to Barcelona routes on a mission to secure a direct hub link. Of course this has been commented on before with KLM and then when LHR runway three was granted. Seems they are more optimistic now.
I would really like to think they could get one but only time will tell. Interestingly they mention Ryanair passenger numbers also. I wonder if this may lead to another destination from the airport?

They also feature in anna aero this month regarding the growth in numbers. All very positive for the little airport down west :)

KLM would be perfect for NQY. A nightstopper and a lunch time flight. Also may boost Dutch tourism into the area.

Totally agree and for me, they are the only viable option given their regional network in the UK.. most airports have them but crucially Exeter doesn't.

Never understood why EXT has never had a KLM connection. Too near BRS I suppose.

NQY is much further way so that dynamic (if indeed it is relevant) would not be a problem. The anna aero article quotes the NQY boss saying they are seriously looking for a European hub link.

August 2017

NQY is in the midst of an amazing rise having reached a current 12-month passenger throughout of over 440,000 in August. In five years its passenger numbers have increased by an incredible 165% and it's still growing each month.

CAA stats show that 62,193 passengers used the terminal in August which is an increase of 30% on August 2016. Atms were up 22.9%. Rolling 12-month total was 440,785, up 35.7% on a year ago.

440,785 is higher than the airport's highest ever calendar year total (431,000 in 2008) but the highest 12-month rolling total was that ending October 2008 when 444,677 passengers were handled. Next month is likely to beat that.

I could see a KLM route from NQY doing well. It is believed that KLMs Liverpool service resulted in a drop from their Manchester carrying and that's why it stopped. The reasons given by KLM were very vague at time and certainly the Liverpool service was growing nicely with talks for adding a 4th rotation. With Bristol being the next nearest KLM link, Newquay would have no ' other airport ' issues. Very irritating for LPL however, especially when they launched Amsterdam to Manston soon after .

CAA Stats September 2017

50,106 passengers used the airport in September, an increase of 22.1% on September 2016. Atms were up 19.8%. Rolling 12-month total was 449,849, up 32.3% on a year ago.

449,849 is the highest 12-month total in the airport's history beating the previous high of 444,677 which was for the 12-month period ending October 2008*. The highest calendar year total is 430,893 which was in 2008.

* Following the apex of October 2008, November and December of that year were dreadful with, for example, December being 80% down on December 2007. Fewer that 4,000 people used the airport in December 2008 and it was the beginning of the recession-fuelled tumble to 166,000 passengers in 2012 after which the climb-back began.

with extended seasons from some of the airlines until the end of October and more year round routes, a record year is clearly on the cards. Next year is also shaping up nicely. Just need a couple more sun and winter sun routes now.. Really impressive what they have done in the last couple of years. A big amount of credit has to go to Flybe who have shown a real vote of confidence in the airport with all of the routes they have put in.

2017 should easily be the best calendar year and in the foreseeable future each succeeding month ought to create a new record 12-month period.

CAA Stats October 2017

CAA Stats November 2017

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
