Iberia Express launches Madrid route
  • The low cost airline will offer two weekly frequencies to the capital of Spain, with tickets from 43GBP per way when buying round trip
  • Iberia Express will operate seven routes this summer from the UK, five to Madrid and two to other destinations in Spain
As part of its 2017 summer programme, Iberia Express is launching a flight from Cardiff to Madrid. The low cost airline of the Iberia Group will start flying to the Spanish capital this Easter, from 6 to 16 April, resuming the flights from the 8th of June to the 28th of September. The airline will offer two weekly frequencies to Madrid on Thursdays and Sundays, with very competitive prices from 43GBP per way when buying a round trip, and from 155GBP in Business.

Madrid is an extremely popular destination for business travelers and tourists alike. Famous for its art museums as well as its football teams, Madrid is also a shopper’s paradise, boasting both name-brand shops and independent establishments offering the highest quality at affordable prices. Another attraction is Madrid’s gastronomy, with a wide variety, high quality and good value at the city’s many restaurants.

The new Iberia Express Cardiff-Madrid route will also offer its customers more destinations. Customers will be able to connect via Madrid and continue their trip to other Iberia Group destinations: 20 Spanish cities, such as Alicante, Asturias, Bilbao, Gran Canaria, Granada or Seville; Lisbon and Porto in Portugal, Johannesburg, Dakar and Malabo; Tel Aviv, as well as Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Santiago de Chile, Medellin, Havana, Mexico City, Miami and New York in the Americas.

Alexandra Sabaté, Head of Network Planning and Scheduling of Iberia Express says: "This new route from Cardiff to Madrid, which we are inaugurating today, shows our commitment to the British market and reinforces our presence in the United Kingdom. Iberia Express is the only airline that directly connects these two great cities, improving the connectivity of Wales to Iberia’s extensive network, and offering a variety of destinations at very competitive prices with high standards of quality and service”.

Deb Barber, Chief Executive Officer of Cardiff Airport said: "We'd like to extend a warm, Welsh welcome to our new airline Iberia Express and its addition of a brand new route to the Spanish capital of Madrid - a destination that's been highly sought by our customers for a long time. With conveniently timed flights available at good prices, the service is ideal for short city breaks to discover all that the city has to offer. Likewise, we look forward to welcoming even more visitors from Spain to our country during what is a very exciting year for Wales - the home nation of Real Madrid star player Gareth Bale and host city for the UEFA Champions League final 2017. With UNESCO listed, stunning mountain ranges, miles of award-winning coastline and a bustling city-scape within easy reach, there are many reasons to visit Wales using our national Airport as the gateway."

United Kingdom is Iberia Express’ main international market, where it already operates a total of seven routes: five to Madrid from London Gatwick, Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham and this new one from Cardiff, as well as routes connecting London Heathrow with Asturias and Gran Canaria. In total, Iberia Express connects the Spanish capital to different British cities with an average of 33 weekly frequencies.

Iberia Express, a subsidiary of the Iberia Group, flies to 40 destinations in 14 countries Apart from flying point-to-point routes, it feeds Iberia’s medium and long-haul network. It is a member of oneworld, an alliance of fifteen airlines that offers its passengers 14,000 daily flights to nearly 1,000 airports in 150 countries. In 2016, Iberia Express was the world’s most punctual low cost airline, for the third year in a row, according to FlightStats.

Just had a look at next Thursdays MAD-CWL flight and economy is sold out! Only Business Flex is left! Good news!

Iberia Express have added 2 extra flights for June.
Thursday 1st June
MAD-CWL 16.10-17.20 CWL-MAD 17.55-21.05
Sunday 4th June
MAD-CWL 09.15-10.25 CWL-MAD 11.00-14.10

I take it that's in connection with the Champions League Final.

Yeah the MAD-CWL on thursday and the CWL-MAD on sunday are marked as sold out with the exception of business. The other flights are decently priced.

Sold out already ? They only went on sale yesterday ! Must have been snapped up by the many thousands of Madrid fans, whether that be Real or Atletico.

I'm wondering if they have just marked those flights as sold out until after the semi finals so they get the wrong fans buying the tickets. The other flights may need to be on sale for a longer period and the business class would be fully flexible so wouldn't be a problem to change if need be.

It was mentioned some where that the f a wont let both sets of fans arrive or depart from the same airport. I will try and find out about this.

There's going to be one Madrid team in the final so i'd have thought CWL would be designated for Real or Athletico fans while BRS would probably be designated for Monaco or Juventus especially as EZY operates flights to Nice and Turin from BRS but would non segregation be a problem between Spanish and Italian and Monaco fans?

Iberia Express stats April 2017
Madrid 952 average pax 119 LF 66%

That's excellent for a new service. I heard that they were already looking at a larger schedule for next Summer.

That'll be great if they increase it. It would also make the long haul connections better as well.

Iberia Express stats July 2017 Madrid 1933 average pax 111 LF 62%

Not a great load factor with July even for a new route. Part of the problem might be the frequency - I think it's 2 x weekly which might be restrictive to some people looking to book a short break if the two days the flight operates don't fit in with their plans.

The 320 is a big aircraft to fill on such a route. Were it a 156-seat aircraft the load factor would be over 70%. Still not eye-popping although we wouldn't know the yield of course.

I've just been looking at easyJet as my son is on the BRS-MAD this evening, hence my current interest, and they use the 156-seat A 319 from BRS, albeit it's daily and the Friday outbound and Friday, Saturday and Sunday inbound are all sold out.

This makes me think that there is a bigger market to be exploited between CWL and MAD than has so far come to the fore.

It needs time to bed in. BCN was the same with VY. It initially started 3x weekly before the other routes were added. It was a new brand in South Wales and even the UK. EZY and FR have huge brand awareness so it took a lot of work for CWL to get Vuelings name out there. The same may need to be done with Iberia.

Hopefully Iberia Express will give it that time. We know that some airlines don't seem to have much patience.

As always (it almost ought to be a permanent annotation on every post in the way that financial institutions always warn that the value of shares can go up or down) the yield is what counts and only those people in any airline who have involvement in such things know that figure.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
