Presumably talks are going on behind the scenes about some Max8s that were scheduled for Monarch going to Jet2 instead

I think I'm just paranoid that there seems little progress on providing the same uplift in stand capacity at Manchester.

Those extra 8 frames can't be used twice.

Remember that Manchester is already a well established (and big) base. Jet2 only started operating from Stansted earlier this year.

Whenever an airline launches a new base, there will nearly always be a large amount of expansion there to bring it inline with their other bases. As @User001 has mentioned on another post, Manchester may potentially get 3 more based aircraft next summer, with one being an A330.

Another point to consider is that at Stansted they're only really competing with Ryanair, whereas at Manchester they're competing with Ryanair plus at least Easyjet, Thomas Cook, Thomson & more.

These type of adverts and articles are all over the Chinese press. And note they regard Manchester as the go to place after London.
Great kudos !

As was said in a recent article in the MEN why go for investment in a falling asset in London when you can invest in one which is rising in Manchester, "as long that is, as demand continues to outstrip supply".

It's certainly put Manchester on the map as a global city and the airport must be prospering under that umbrella.

Whether any of these "investors" ever actually see their asset is of course a mute point.

From an economic point of view, let's hope it doesn't start raining

Have to say I'm euphoric about the £400m which Westminster has lavished on us. Certainly compares well to the £64bn in London.

I saw a great example of how this can be scaled.

NW £400M
SE £64,000,000,000m

We really should be doffing our caps at
Such a fabulous investment across the North of England.

Inexplicably the M E N is yet to cover the visit ?

And also this with £1m in funding targetting the US market:

"Marketing Manchester chief executive Sheona Southern: “Greater Manchester’s tourism sector is one of extraordinary success which is often overlooked. Thanks to Manchester Airport’s growth and continued success over the past five years, international visitors reached 1.4m in 2016, which already exceeds the target set in the 2020 Tourism Strategy. And at a wider regional level there has also been a 7% increase in the number of international visitors across the North West in the last year."

It was a similar story in a report by Kamal Ahmed, the BBC Economics Editor, the other day. A general reference to infrastructure and transport spending but a very specific reference to Heathrow investment.

Whether you like it or not, the expansion of Heathrow IS the biggest f*** up when it comes to UK infrastructure.

Yes the regions get a lack of investment (well reported on in the media), but Heathrow is a single project that has been delayed purely by various politicians agenda for almost 50 years!

People think the new airport in Berlin is an embarrassment - at least they've started construction there.

Maybe because it's in totally the wrong place ? IMHO it should have been 20 miles up the M40. Trying to get a quart into a pint pot with mutiple inbound legs over the capital is a recipe for disaster.
Heathrow's attractiveness is also it's undoing in my view.

Having said all that I fail to see how the £1bn transformation of Manchester with private money taking capacity to 55m is not apparently as attractive as an eyewatering taxpayer subsidy for Heathrow. Whilst the profile has increased its still not struck a chord with leader writers.

Joanne Roney OBE: I don’t have to look far to see global ambitions of this city
Manchester council's chief executive on her strategy for the city...

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/business/business-news/joanne-roney-obe-dont-look-13783523

"Other key markets for export growth will be China, Japan, India and – to an extent – the United Arab Emirates. We aim to take advantage of strong relationships with key cities within these markets, including Beijing, Shanghai and Wuhan in China; New York, Silicon Valley and Boston in the US; Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad in India and Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the UAE."

Making Manchester a top 20 global city by 2025? That's ambitious to say the least!

If aggregated with Liverpool, Leeds, or both this is more achievable but a major stretch.

For benchmarking, this would place "Manchester" on a par with LA, KL, Amsterdam, Seoul, Toronto and ahead of Melbourne, Washington, Delhi, Bangkok.

It's ambitious, but if they fall short it would still be a damned good effort...

It's going to a more of a challenge to attract a couple of world-leading brands into setting up shop within the region given the potential issue of an EU trade deal not allowing full unfettered access to that market. However, it's got to be this way forward to gain traction to having a meaningful "Northern Powerhouse".

I don't want to get into the politics but it may be the case that certain companies operating in the EU have a requirement for a U.K. Office after Brexit. If so, attracting those would be a help.

In broad terms, the area needs to grow an organic corporate giant and/or attract one of the big boys (like a google or Facebook) to set up a major presence in the area with high value jobs.

Getting more financial and professional services in the region will also be a big help.

Lots of interesting info in the links, good to see MAN is now officially recognised as one of 3 UK hubs (LHR/LGW/MAN)

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
