Nice tech stop today for a Sun County Airlines 737-800 N818SY on a ferry flight from ABB Addis Abbaba Ethiopia to MSP USA via BRS for fuel due bad weather in SNN and then crew change/ fuel stop in SNN continuing on to MSP.

You don't get many of those in do you big g?

Couldn't have been very impressed with our weather either.

Very nice. They might not have been impressed by the UK weather (or the local micro climate at BRS :s_yes ) but they will have brightened up the place for the time they were there.

It was nice to see a different 738 at the airport they parked it next to a Ryanair and Thomson 738's, just a shame it was all white as it has just been purchased from Eithopen, I b leave the crew enjoyed the approach but they were on 27.

Thursday 10 January 2013

It's been foggy all around the Bristol area for much of the day, even in the city centre.

I was walking around the country lanes and went within half a mile of the eastern end of the airport during the middle of the day but the fog only permitted visibility up to about 200 metres at that location.

There was almost no wind but what there was seemed to be from the east/southeast which normally means runway 09, the one not equipped with Cat 3b ILS.

I could hear aircraft overhead apparently taking off and landing.

A later check with the BRS website revealed just three diversions, all to CWL, namely:

Morning BMI Regional E145 from Aberdeen
Morning Air France ATR 42 from Paris Cdg
Lunchtine Aer Lingus Regional ATR 72 from Cork

Everything else seemed to have got in, presumably with a very light tail wind so they could use runway 27 which from the sounds in the fog was the one in use.

It's another example of the benefit of the Cat 3 ILS. I suspect that before its installation nothing would have landed for several hours.

The situation seems to have eased from late afternoon as all flights appear to be landing now, including the smaller turbo-props not normally equipped for Cat 3 ILS.

Significant amounts of snow effecting the Bristol area at the moment with up to eight inches of snow being reported.

Bristol airport is currently snow closed.

METAR: EGGD 180750Z 12012KT 1000 R09/P1500 R27/1500 SN SCT002 BKN003 M01/M01 Q1001 R/SNOCLO

Significant amounts of snow effecting the Bristol area at the moment with up to eight inches of snow being reported.

Had several inches of snow overnight until mid morning with odd flurries since then.

So far the following 18 departures (and corresponding inbounds) have been cancelled:

0630 Ryanair Dublin
0815 Aer Lingus Dublin
0845 easyJet Newcastle
1015 easyJet Geneva
1020 KLM Amsterdam
1025 Eastern Leeds-Bradford/Aberdeen
1030 easyJet Toulouse
1140 easyJet Inverness
1145 Aer Lingus Dublin
1225 Aurigny Guernsey
1235 Air France Paris Cdg
1250 easyJet Rome
1300 Aer Lingus Cork
1320 easyJet Edinburgh
1340 easyJet Glasgow
1440 easyJet Belfast Int
1705 easyJet Copenhagen
1825 easyJet Paris Cdg

In addition 19 departures that should have gone by now, some early this morning, are showing as delayed. It seems probable that some of these will not operate.

BRS had been due to operate 64 departures today with the same nuber of arrivals.

Update

Airport website now showing runway open at 1410 hours. Thus far a total of 18 aircraft have either taken off or are boarding, including several that should have departed early this morning.

One further cancellation to add to above list:

0940 Blue Islands Jersey

Further Update 2215 hours

More cancellations, viz.

0620 Brussels Airlines (Flybe) Brussels
0930 Ryanair Wroclaw
1715 Air France Paris Cdg
1750 easyJet Geneva
1755 easyJet Berline Schonefeld
1920 easyJet Belfast Int

At present everything else appears to be departing/returning except that many are showing several hours delay - up to eight hours.

It's really a tremendous effort as some flights are not now due to return until the middle of the night (as late as 0330).

On the local tv news some punters were moaning this morning about the airport closing as they'd managed to get there. They seemed to have no comprehension that the runway could not be cleared whilst it was still snowing heavily.

Situation in previous post updated, including runway opening.

Another update entered in the original log two posts previously.

Sunday 20 January 2013

Following rotations cancelled today:

2 x Air France Paris Cdg
1 x easyJet Paris Cdg
1x KLM C'hop Amsterdam
1x Brussels Airlines (Flybe) Brussels

A check with the CDG and AMS boards shows numerous cancellations today - presumably weather-related.

The first AF to CDG tomorrow is already cancelled.

I think both Amsterdam and Paris have suffered from bad weather over the last 24 hours which might explain the cancellations.

Notably the temperature at BRS is minus -7 'c already :s_omg and it's only 22:47 as I write this!

Monday 21 January 2013

2 out of the 3 Air France to Paris Cdg cancelled today (evening inbound operated).

easyJet to/from Paris Cdg also cancelled.

Both due to continuing weather problems at Cdg.

Possibility of more significant snow tomorrow in the Bristol area. Weather forecast seems uncertain how much will actually reach the area.

Tuesday 22 January 2013

There's been light snow in and around Bristol since mid afternoon which was not too troublesome in itself although it was settling on the considerable remnants of the snowstorms of last week.

However, from around 1700 the falling snow increased in density and is now a significant presence on the ground. It's forecast to snow for much of the night with several inches anticipated though, as always seems to be the case with snow, the forecasts seem to vary with each new telling.

Inbound diversions from BRS began to occur from about 1800 and several have so far gone to Cardiff, Birmingham and Bournemouth.

Further to my previous post, it's still snowing heavily and the airport website bears this notice: 'Snow is affecting airport operations and some local roads are becoming impassable.' The notice goes on to advise passengers to contact airline before travelling to the airport.

In fact, nothing seems to have landed or taken off since tea time.

The below is taken from the Airport arrivals page on its website at 2145 hours.

Diversions

Ryanair from Faro to Bournemouth
Ryanair from Budapest to Birmingham
Thomson from Tenerife to Cardiff

easyJet from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Amsterdam are all showing as cancelled yet earlier this evening the Cardiff Airport website arrivals page showed them arriving there.

Cancellations

Air France from Paris Cdg
Brussels Airlines (Flybe) from Brussels
Eastern from Aberdeen/Leeds Bradford
KLM C'hop from Amsterdam
easyJet from Newcastle and Belfast International (and earlier outbounds)
Ryanair from Dublin (and earlier outbound)
Blue Islands from Jersey arrived but the return was cancelled - probably because it couldn't get out before the snow

That leaves the inbound Ryanair from Warsaw, still optimistically estimating an arrival at 2235 hours, and the inbound Bmi Regional from Aberdeen of which we can expect more information at 2200 hours.

Tomorrow morning the early KLM C'hop to AMS, the Eastern to LBA/ABZ and the Air France to CDG have already been cancelled. If the forecasters are correct about the snow they might not be the only ones.

Since last Friday the snow in the UK and on the near Continent has seen over 70 BRS flights (the total of inbound and outbound) cancelled or diverted.

Well it'ss been an interesting day and as you have said the snow coming in around 1700.
The Blue Island landed and the airfield closed 15 mins later, the snow ploughs and de-icing sprayers were out at 1800 but the snow took hold and became to heavy.

It's looking around 0500 23/1 before the airfield reopens but then that's dependent on the snow fall through the night.

Thanks for that big g.

According to the local news the airport re-opened for flights at 0800 this morning.

The airport was within about seven miles of a near trouble-free evening. I live on the south-eastern edge of the city about five miles from the centre and we had a bucket load of snow all evening - also had about an inch through mid morning today.

However, the central areas of the city had very little snow last night. My wife went into town this afternoon and said the new snow lying on the ground disappeared between Knowle and Totterdown and there was very little sign of it around the central area.

Incidentally, I notice that one of the captains who uses BRS took the trouble to post to the Dried Plum today thanking and complimenting the staff at the airport for their efforts in not only clearing the snow but also for restoring the runway surface to an 'excellent' condition.

Today's cancellations all seem to be knock-ons from yesterday with aircraft out of position.

Inbound

Blue Islands from Jersey
Brussels Airlines (Flybe) from Brussels
Eastern from Aberdeen/Leeds-Bradford

Outbound

Eastern to Leeds-Bradford/Aberdeen
Air France to Paris Cdg
Bmi Regional to Aberdeen
Brussels Airlines (Flybe) to Brussels

Monday 13 May 2013

Aurigny GR 642/643 from/to Guernsey was cancelled today according to Ceefax and the BRS and GCI web arrivals/departures pages. Can't be the usual reason for Channel Island cancellations - fog/mist! - because everything else seems to be operating.

The GCI arrivals page also showed SI (Blue Islands) 331 arriving at 1220 from Bristol-London City-Jersey.

That's an odd one as SI 331 is apparently normally a JER-CGI flight.

Not sure of the nature of the emergency but FR24 was reporting an Easyjet aircraft making an emergency approach into Bristol earlier today. The steep decent from high altitude would suggest a pressurisation problem.

TOM 375 (Boeing 767) from Cancun, Mexico was due to arrive at BRS at 0700 today.

The BRS website arrivals page was showing its expected arrival time as '1 June'.

The 374 to CUN went tec and a replacement was flown in and operated out to CUN but unfortunately that aircraft went tec in CUN. The 375 is estimating in at 0602 1/7 on a 3rd aircraft!

Bet they can't wait to get those 787's on-line

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
