Emirates 250,000th Newcastle Airport passenger

Emirates welcomed the 250,000th passenger on its daily service operating between Newcastle Airport and Dubai yesterday. Passenger Peter Roeves, a retired engineer from Sunderland, who was travelling with his wife Judith, to Dubai and onward to Perth, Australia, to visit his son, daughter-in-law and grand-daughter received VIP treatment.

Emirates’ launched its service from Newcastle in September 2007. The daily flight has been welcomed by holidaymakers and business travellers alike who are now able to travel directly from the region to Dubai and beyond to a network that spans six continents. Laurie Berryman, Emirates Manager UK North, said: ‘A quarter of a million passengers in less than two years is a significant achievement. We are delighted and grateful for the support we have received from passengers and cargo shippers from across the region.’

Mr Roeves said: ‘We travel to Australia regularly to see our family and being able to fly with Emirates directly from the region makes travelling much easier. Before Emirates started services, we had to fly via London and had some awful journeys.’

In a horrendous last twelve months at Newcastle re loss of passengers generally, this route seems to shine like a beacon.

Assuming that Emirates knows what it is doing as regards getting good yields, the passenger numbers appear excellent.

In a word 'Freight'

I know freight plays a big part in the viability of this service.

Seahouses woman is 500,000th Emirates passenger

A RETIRED shopkeeper from Northumberland was heading to Dubai in business class yesterday after becoming the 500,000th Emirates passenger to fly from the region.

Josephine Cochrane, 66, said she was delighted to have helped the airline reach the milestone as she was presented with two complimentary tickets at Newcastle International Airport.

The pensioner, who was flying with the long-haul carrier for the fifth time to see her brother in Australia, said the airline had helped bring her family closer together.

Mrs Cochrane’s celebrations came on the back of three and a half years of continued growth from Emirates at Newcastle, including a 15% rise in passenger numbers last year.

North East business leaders and sports stars yesterday joined passengers in congratulating the Dubai-based firm on its success so far.

Mrs Cochrane, of Seahouses, said: “I was delighted when I found out I was the 500,000th passenger, and very grateful for their generosity.

“Being able to fly to Australia from Newcastle has been wonderful. It cuts out the stress of changing flights and airlines in places like London.” Planning and corporate affairs director for Newcastle International Airport Graeme Mason said: “Emirates have been a fantastic airline to work with and have really transformed what Newcastle Airport can offer by connecting the North East region with other global destinations.

“It has been of benefit to the region to be directly linked with economies in the East that are quickly maturing. Places like India and China, which Emirates serve comprehensively, are destinations businesses in the North East should be looking to exploit if the region’s economy is to prosper.”

He was backed by local businesses. Richard Swart, managing director of Berger Group Europe and chairman of North East Chamber of Commerce’s International Trade Committee said: “There are major growth markets to the east which many of our companies are active in, and a direct link into the North East is a great advantage as they seek to be competitive.”

Alan Richardson, contracts manager for Hart Door Systems Limited, added: “I have personally used the flight a number of times since it has been available and, as a business, sent a number of engineers to Dubai with Emirates.

“Without doubt the route has greatly helped the effectiveness of our business in connection with our export business to the Middle East region.”

Newcastle Falcons rugby star Stewart McCullough said: “Newcastle Falcons is a very ambitious club and the flight has helped in attracting top-class rugby players to the North East. The flight is very accessible for the players and has allowed loved ones to visit them and vice versa.”

Second row Andrew Van der Heijden, due to make his debut for the Falcons in the next couple of weeks said: “I used the Dubai to Newcastle flight when I moved from New Zealand last December. Newcastle is a great place to live and visit, and the flight is very accessible to users.”

Joanne Purves, director of international development at Northumbria University, said: “Northumbria University is the largest recruiter of international students in the North East and having the Dubai route has made travel easier for a very large number of our international students.”

As some of you may know GLA has had an added flight to Dubai. Ive been told that the NCL Route is Also under review for a second flight, now i can't say the source is 100% but if it is correct, we may see a second flight added to NCL and if not then there could be a chance for the aircraft type to be upgraded, after all Emirates are currently phasing out the A330 that operates DXB-NCL route.

Newcastle-Dubai

Reported on another forum that the 330 is to be replaced by a two-class B777-300 from this coming September.

Can anyone tell me the load factors of EK's NCL-DXB route?
Total for the month of October was 18,860, average pax per flight was 304, LF is 71%. I believe the aircraft used is a 777 300 ER version with no first class.

Emirates Celebrates 10 Successful Years
Emirates, a global connector of people, places and economies, is today celebrating a decade of operations out of Newcastle Airport. Carrying over 912,000 passengers between Newcastle and Dubai since launching in September 2007, the figures reflect the importance of the city to the ongoing growth of the UK’s northern powerhouse.

Over 115,000 passengers have travelled between Newcastle and Dubai in the last 12 months alone. From Newcastle, passengers connecting through Dubai have travelled around the world with Emirates. In the last 12 months, the most popular destinations for travellers going on from Dubai were Bangkok, Sydney and Singapore. Closely following these destinations were Hong Kong, Perth and Melbourne, demonstrating the global reach of Emirates’ network.

Around 28,000 tonnes of cargo have been shipped in and out of Newcastle since the launch of the route, with 4.2 million kgs carried in and out of the UK in the past 12 months. The most popular cargo carried include pharmaceutical products and oil well equipment.

Laurie Berryman, Emirates Vice President, UK, said:

We are so proud to be celebrating ten years of operations out of Newcastle Airport. The gateway continues to go from strength to strength and the milestone represents Emirates’ continued commitment to the city.

“We’re really excited about what the future holds in Newcastle, and look forward to the next decade of operations.”

Nick Jones, Chief Executive at Newcastle International Airport

“We are delighted to be celebrating Emirates 10th anniversary. Emirates takes great pride in the role it plays in the region, both for business and leisure passengers and we look forward to this fantastic relationship going from strength to strength in the future.”

Cllr Iain Malcolm, Leader of South Tyneside Council and Chair of the LA7 Airport Holding Company

“The Emirates route is an important asset to the North East, not only enhancing regional connectivity but also attracting thousands of inbound tourists into the region. The daily link to Dubai with Emirates has played a key role in the airport’s growth and I hope to see it continue for many years to come.”

James Ramsbotham, Chief Executive of the North East England Chamber of Commerce

“The last ten years have been some of the most economically challenging in our lifetimes, yet North East England has thrived – achieving record levels of employment, productivity and export success. We have Emirates to thank for so much of this: opening up the Middle East, Asia, the Far East, Australasia and Southern Africa through its daily scheduled flight to its Dubai hub. It has been transformational. Our businesses have been quick to take advantage and do justice to the confidence in our region shown by Emirates for which we cannot thank the airline enough. Hello tomorrow – it is also our future.”

Emirates provides a daily flight from Newcastle to Dubai, which is operated by a Boeing 777 and departs at 13.45.

Newcastle Airport Press Release

I'd imagine NCL is gaining on the cargo due to the all A380 operations at BHX and MAN which is restricting some cargo capability from those 2 airports. Any double daily operation in the short-term would probably be based on this as there's not really the weight of passenger numbers that other airports have had prior to the frequency expansion (having said that, based on the article above, NCL is doing 75% to 80% loads - which is way above their reported worldwide annual load - as MAN went months on end with 90%+ loads prior to getting a 2nd flight).

What would undoubtedly help is if Emirates had 787s/A350s now as they could then drop aircraft size on an individual frequency whilst boosting overall capacity. This is part of the drawback of the EK fleet strategy over the past few years where baseline entry for a new route or extra frequency is a 364 seater 77W with 1st class or 428 seater 77W that is business and economy class only. A nice 300 seat capacity aircraft would now suit NCL purposes very well instead of waiting years for the 787-10s to come online.

Never understood why emirates got rid of the A330 so soon. Sure enough I understand how they aim to have a young aircraft fleet and replace them on a regular basis. But personally feel the A330 would come in handy right about now for them, would have tidy the gap until the 787-10 arrival. The A330 would have been an ideal candidate for a second rotation from NCL.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
