Hi all,

As a young lad I remember seeing the Alcock & Brown statue at Manchester airport, I also used to walk to school through Southern Cemetery and would often stop and take a poignant look at the headstone to Sir John Alcock, I didn't realise until I read the very good piece on the bbc news site that their actual crossing of the Atlantic was a hundred years ago today and so this prompted me to start this thread into why Manchester and its airport have no official memorial/celebration of these two pioneering Manchester aviators?
I find it quite saddening that there isn't much recognition of there achievement.

They have! There is a sculpture located at the junction of the Skylink close to the station where the routes split off towards T1 and T2 (upper level where the shops are). The sculpture was originally located in one of the terminals but was relocated when that space was remodelled some years ago.

If I remember rightly it used to be located on the walk into the old spectators terrace access up to pier A but was relocated when Olympic house came along and they took away the viewing platform in the late 80's. Also if it was the same statue, it was a pretty poor effort. I might be wrong in my memory of it though as some years have passed since I last saw it!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
