The search for Cardiff Airport’s next Chair is underway
View attachment 13488

Cardiff Airport is searching for its next Chair to build on recent success and deliver an ambitious strategy for growth.

After a hugely successful four year tenure, Roger Lewis has announced his plan to step down as Chairman of Cardiff Airport on 31st October 2019.

The new Chair will step in to head up the Cardiff Airport Board of Directors and play a pioneering role at a strategic level to deliver a thriving, sustainable airport business for Wales.

Since coming under ownership of the Welsh Government in 2013, Cardiff Airport has seen over 60% passenger growth, made significant improvements to the customer experience and welcomed new airlines and routes to its growing network.

The airport is a key strategic asset for the country and an economic driver, supporting over 1900 aviation-related jobs. In recent years the airport has also re-established its position as a vital gateway to the UK for international visitors.

Economy and Transport Minister Ken Skates, said:
“Cardiff Airport is a vital part of the economy of South Wales and of the region’s transport mix. The Chair of the board is a crucial appointment. I am looking forward to seeing the very best candidates come forward to build on the sterling work of Roger Lewis and his team.

“The foundations are in place. The new Chair will be dynamic and focussed, and will provide support, guidance and encouragement to the excellent leadership team at the airport.

“Working with the well-established board of Cardiff Airport the Chair will oversee delivery of the 20 year vision of the airport through implementation of a new Masterplan – taking the airport forward to achieving its goal of two million passengers per annum by 2021.

“With APD now recommended for devolution by the Welsh Affairs Committee, and Brexit approaching, the airport has opportunities to shape our country in the future. The airport is now and will continue to be a key pillar of Wales’ transport infrastructure and a significant contributor to our economy.

“I look forward to working with the new Chair to deliver an optimistic, better connected future for the people of Wales.”

Candidates interested in applying for the role of Chair should email [email protected] or visit www.goodsonthomas.com for further information.

Under Roger Lewis tenure as chairman Cardiff airport has grown from 1,160,506 passengers to 1,581,131 passengers a growth of 36%.
The Flybe base grew to 3 aircraft, the TUI base grew to 3 aircraft, Thomas Cook added a bigger aircraft, Ryanair has expanded from 1 route to 5 routes, Vueling continued to grow and so has KLM, Iberia Express launched Madrid, Blue islands launched Guernsey and Qatar Airways launched Doha.
The departure area has been revamped and expanded. New security scanners fitted, new baggage system and new E gates installed. Also 2 new passenger boarding bridges installed. Global Trek has setup a base. The car park has been revamped with a meet and greet system and a new hire car centre installed. Those are the improvements off the top of my head.
Negatives though must include the lack of attraction of a cargo airline, the Flybe reduction and related route losses, Vueling dropping Barcelona, Iberia Express dropping Madrid, Blue islands dropping Guernsey, the failure to retain Orlando, the failure to attract a North American route and the failure to get Ryanair to base.
With the terminal could a more extensive revamp have been done? Or a rebuilding of the terminal?
Although many of the negatives may have been out of his control.
Generally though I do think his time has been positive!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
