BMI will reduce from eight to seven the number of flights between Belfast and London

The airline BMI has said it is reducing from eight to seven the number of flights between Belfast and London from the end of next month.

From October 25, the 19:00 flight from London Heathrow to George Best Belfast City Airport and the 21.05 flight in the opposite direction will be dropped from the winter schedule.

In an email to customers, the airline said it would try to make alternative arrangements for those who had already booked one of the flights.

"If you have a booking on one of our affected services, our immediate priority is to secure alternatives for you with the minimum of disruption," the email said.

Brenda Morgan, BMI Northern Ireland Sales Manager, said: "The two early evening flights which leave within forty minutes of each other will be merged.

"This change in the winter timetable maintains adequate passenger capacity."

There are concerns over the future of the BMI service from Belfast City Airport to Heathrow, UTV reports. The route - which is considered the most important air link between Northern Ireland and Great Britain - is at risk with BMI expected to be taken over by British Airways.

Prof Austin Smyth from the University of Westminster, said he expects BA to cut the number of short haul routes BMI operates from Heathrow. He said: ‘The reason BA is purchasing BMI is for its landing slots to Heathrow. It could divert those slots to more profitable [long haul] destinations.’

However, NI Trade Minister Arlene Foster was more positive. She said: ‘We have been watching very carefully what is happening, but we are quite content because we know the flights between Belfast and Heathrow are profitable.’

British Airways says it has stood up to competition from Aer Lingus on the Belfast City Airport shuttle service to London since its takeover of BMI last year

International Airlines Group chief executive Willie Walsh has reiterated the company's commitment to the Belfast City Airport to London Heathrow route.

Mr Walsh said its airline British Airways has outperformed expectations and stood up to competition from Aer Lingus on the shuttle service since its takeover of BMI last year.

"Belfast is a very important market for us, it's doing very well," he said.
