Cardiff: Airport Cargo Operations

European Cargo has appointed Joint Administrators as of 4pm today and consequently has ceased trading with immediate effect. Sadly, approximately 150 jobs are now at risk, possibly more in connected roles at Bournemouth and Teesside Airports.

Indeed. Never a good thing when the livlihoods of hardworking people are left at risk. Only 3 months after the new base at Teesside opened with significant investment from the Tees Valley Combined Authority.

Well hopefully for Teesside the contract was with the cargo people and not just the airline and another airline can be found.

No but the contract could've been with the company bringing in the goods rather than the airline itself.

The loss of that contract was one of the issues that contribited towards yesterday's appointments. We can only hope only a small proportion of the "50 jobs" that were due to be generated by the EC / MME deal were in place prior to the airline's collapse.

Also makes you wonder how quickly they fell into bed with Teesside after ceasing operations at Cardiff, only to collapse less than three months later.

There has been some conjecture from one or two "fans" and a certain (now ex-) employee regards a "disagrement over contractual terms" or that one party "increased their "fees" without discussion". We'll probably never know whether either was anywhere near the mark.

It is telling, however, that both European Cargo and Cardiff Airport had remained tight lipped ever since.

I suppose Teesside is eager just like any other airport to diversify.
I do wonder if switching the cargo operations over to Swissport was part of the disagreement? We'll probably never really know what happened.

I do think one of the problems for European Cargo was it's likely with Temu being their only customer their margins were quite thin and with operating aircraft that were not very fuel efficient any sort of extra fees or increase in them and increase in the price of fuel wiped any slim margin out.
