Using Edinburgh Airport (Questions and Reviews)

Hi, I am planning my flight from Edinburgh to London. If I can only leave Edinburgh city centre at 19:00hr and there are 2 night flights at 20:25hr and 21:20 hr respectively. Assuming the usual traffic condtion during Edinburgh evening and the usual security check at the airport, can someone please kindly advise me what is the likelyhood that I am able to board the 20:25hr flight or the the 21:20hr flight?

Otherwise, I have no choice but to book the return flight on the following day. Thanks.

Many scheduled airlines now offer relatively short last check-in times for flights so the 21:20 flight should be fine but to be on the safe side check the last check-in time with this particular airline before booking. I would probably advise against trying to make the earlier flight unless the airline can guarantee a place on the later flight if you miss it.

In recent years I've caught the airport bus from near Waverley Station around 1900 to catch the last southbound easyJet to Bristol several times without any problem. The flight has usually been scheduled to leave EDI somewhere around 2115-2130 - it varies a bit from year to year.

I've usually reached EDI within thirty minutes on this bus.

Thanks for the replies. The 21:20 flight is operated by Easyjet while the 20.25hr flight is operated by BA. As the price difference is less than 10pounds, I would like to take the BA flight but since the advice is for the later flight, guess I better follow the advice given instead of taking the risk!

In a few months I’ll be using EDI for the first time, to get to a family wedding in Scotland. I’m due to fly in from Vienna on May 24th and depart back to Vienna on the 27th.

Flights are with Ryanair but the inbound flight is scheduled to be on Lauda and the outbound flight on Malta Air.

Anyone got any tips / advice on what I ought to expect, with EDI being very busy nowadays?

Hi,
Edinburgh airport is small compared to other airports that handle the same no of passengers, it all depends on what time you are due to arrive.
It is a lot easier if you only have cabin luggage as some times it can take a while for other bags to arrive
Am is the busiest time when all the transatlantic start arriving.
There are good connections by trams buses and taxis.

you won’t have any extra long walks as everything is very close to each other.

when departing if it the morning give your self plenty of time if you are checking in bags

other than that it can be a bit cramp

Enjoy your trip once out of the airport the city makes up for everything

Vienna - Edinburgh (Friday 24th)
I arrived on A320 9H-LOZ at around 10:00. We were unable to leave the baggage reclaim for a short time due to the doors being closed but this was less than 5 minutes. (We were told this was due to a passenger going the wrong way through a one way system. I’m not sure how that works.) I left on the bus which was very conveniently located. On both days the pavement outside the airport was absolutely crammed with passengers for the buses and trams. I think there will come a point in the near future when the pedestrians will need more space set aside for them.

I spent the weekend in St Andrews for a family wedding but I also had some time to spend in Edinburgh while waiting for my train, and I walked between Waverley station and the observatory on Calton Hill. I was very impressed by how much there was to see in just a short walk 🙂

Edinburgh-Vienna (Monday 27th)
I departed on a 737MAX (9H-VUW), having used the tram from Edinburgh Gateway. I arrived at 10:15 and I got through security in just under 20 minutes. A few transatlantic flights were departing just before mine. So the security queue was large, but it was kept on the move and the staff were proactive in splitting off people into lanes. The boarding was delayed for an hour due to the plane having a technical issue on an earlier flight. we eventually departed at around 14:30. As a result the departure pier became quite hot and stuffy with 200+ people waiting for an hour in a small seating area. There were enough seats for everyone but I found the wooden beam benches were very uncomfortable to sit on. Maybe it’s just me but I found myself wishing they could replace the benches with the bog standard plastic seats.

Both flights were very full. overall, I got the sense of an airport that was almost at the limit of its capacity but it didn’t feel chaotic or disorganised. I wouldn’t hesitate to use Edinburgh Airport again in the future.
