Bottega Prosecco Bar at Birmingham Airport wins Airport Bar of the Year award

SSP’s Bottega Prosecco Bar at Birmingham wins Airport Bar of the Year award at Drinks International Travel Retail Awards 2018

Bottega Prosecco Bar has been honoured with the Airport Bar of the Year award at the Drinks International Travel Retail Awards 2018.

Bottega Prosecco Bar, which launched at Birmingham Airport in March, saw food and beverage operator SSP Group PLC partner with premium Italian drinks brand Bottega to bring the atmosphere and ambience of a Venetian Bacaro bar to international travellers. The bar offers a broad selection of fine wine and food that can be enjoyed all day in a relaxed environment, and includes a breakfast menu, specialities and popular dishes with an Italian twist.

Simon Smith, CEO of SSP UK & Ireland, said: “We’re delighted to have won this important award from Drinks International. This success reflects not only our great partnership with Bottega but also the strength of our brand portfolio. The concept has been incredibly well-received by passengers travelling through Birmingham Airport.”

Sandro Bottega, owner and Managing Director at Bottega, commented: “We are delighted to have won this award, which reflects the appreciation of British and global consumers for prosecco and its culinary tradition made of simplicity, genuineness and taste. We are grateful to SSP for having interpreted our concept of quality and service in the best possible way, and to Birmingham Airport for believing in the project and support its development.”

Richard Gill, Acting Commercial Director at Birmingham Airport commented: “The arrival of the Bottega Prosecco Bar at Birmingham Airport is a fantastic addition to our catering offer. We are always looking at ways to improve our bars and restaurants, ensuring our passengers have a wide range of choice whilst they are at the Airport.

“The Bottega Prosecco Bar launched earlier this year and we have welcomed passengers far and wide to enjoy the world-renowned Bottega brand. Winning the award for Airport Bar of the Year is just testament to how high customer demand is for a premium bar at Birmingham Airport. We would like to congratulate the Bottega team for winning the award and wish them every success for the future.

Unfortunately this happens often.Units open with a huge fanfare, then quietly disappearing. There are many reasons for this,I am sure many of you will be able to work these out.

The Joe and the Juice bar has now closed and is boarded up.

The WHSmith store just down from the security check area, and just before you go through the duty free store has also closed. Not sure if another unit is going into here,or if this is part of the wider terminal expansion plans.

This makes me wonder whether this will be the location of the new M&S store,as opposed to taking over the Joe and the Juice area.
When I get chance I will make enquiries as to what the story is,but moves are now being made with regards to terminal improvements.
I will keep you updated as things start to happen.

I seem to recall reading in the master plan that there were plans to extend the security link building airside to expand security. Is the WHSmith store close enough to security that it would have to close to allow this?

Coathanger16,you could well be right.
The unit in question is close enough to the security screening area to become part of this plan.
I always wondered why WHSmith had a unit here,as they have a bigger unit in the lounge as well as one in the South Terminal(T2,Eurohub).

I hope the new M&S isn't going here as it's hardly an ideal location.

If they are hoping to sell meals for travellers to eat on their flight they'd be much better off in the main lounge where people can grab what they need and go, especially those who do this last minute. I'm not convinced that people will be willing to walk all the way back through World Duty Free just for a sarnie, especially when there are plenty of options available much closer.

The WHSmith unit mentioned in my previous post is actually being refitted/refurbished. This area is often subject to bottlenecks at busy times, so I am surprised WHS is keeping this unit open. It is in a good strategic spot for them, not necessarily good for everyone.

Hi mate I will pass your comments on to my daughter she is a shift manager there and I totally agree always had good service when I go in there

Please do :)

I have emailed and Tweeted in the past but I'm not sure if things filter down?

These days too many people are quick to complain about the slightest little thing but rarely give praise where it is due.

The M&S food to go unit is now open.
There is a selection of hot and cold food, snacks and drinks available. There is also a small seated area alongside the unit so you can relax while having your meal if you wish,or you can buy and take your meal onboard the aircraft.
The WHSmith unit just down from the security clearance area and before you enter the Duty Free store is also open.Looks smart enough, but my issue is with the increasing number of self service tills.(if interested see my post in Random Stuff).
