Excellent result for DOH. Dec & Jan being good months, as expected with students & Christmas/NY holiday travellers.
I make Dec & Jan to be about 76% LF.

Yes it was a good surprise to see such a jump. The route is maturing well. It'll be interesting to see February's numbers on it. Also generally considering the loss of the Flybe base, FR Tenerife and VY Malaga for most of that month 7% drop isn't as bad as i feared it might be.

Well, it was maturing well.

It will have a blip yes like most of the routes but it will get back on track and i do feel that out of all the airlines at CWL Qatar are one of the least likely to leave in the aftermath of coronavirus.

I do agree with you actually. Qatar airways do seem to be world domination mode and will likely to continue to be after all this is over so i can’t actually see them pulling the route.

The route is becoming established, the airlines i fear will reduce or leave altogether is TUI and Ryanair but i guess we'll have to wait and see. In the meantime Doha had pretty good increase in February as well.

CAA Stats March 2020
29,346 passengers used the airport in March down 70.4% on 2019.
Rolling year was 1,579,366 down 0.4% on 2019.
Atms were 439 down 63.9% on 2019.

The effect of losing Flybe and the start of the COVID_19 crisis really shows.

If it is some consolation, all other airports have been affected the same.
Oh definitely they have. For CWL its a bit worse because of the loss of Flybe as well. It'll take time but I do believe that the airport will bounce back.

CWL will definitely survive even if the post-COVID effects for aviation are as dire as some people seem to be suggesting they will be. The WG won't allow CWL to close, unlike some mainly smaller airports in the country that might be vulnerable if aviation really does take many years to recover.

southampton being one of those i imagine, and potentially BOH for passenger traffic?

I didn’t really want to point the finger at specific airports but it’s common knowledge that some have small passenger footprints and rely, or relied in a number of cases, on one airline for much of their traffic.

Where the airline was Flybe some were potentially in deep trouble before the effects of COVID-19 on aviation began to bite. If some of the airlines that stuck their head above the parapet and said they would take over many of the former Flybe the routes don’t survive, and by their nature they aren’t large organisations, then clearly airports that can’t replace the formerly dominant Flybe will have major problems.

It might also depend on the stance the UK government takes on some form of subsidising domestic routes.

Some of the above airports might have other strings to their bow such as cargo, strong general aviation, engineering which might tide them over the worst excesses of the virus, but if the entire UK aviation scene shrinks to the degree that some people are suggesting then it appears unlikely that there will be enough opportunities for all existing airports.

Even airports that have seemingly been doing well could catch a severe cold if their main airline ceased to exist, with CWL’s neighbour heavily reliant on easyJet for example.

Being owned by the Welsh Government puts CWL in a stronger position than many smaller regional airports because post-Brexit it’s likely that EU state aid rules will no longer apply in the UK and the WG would then have more scope for subsidising routes. Listening to WG committees in recent months there seems broad cross party support for the idea that Wales must have its own airport. Although the main opposition parties will still niggle saying that either not enough is being done or too much is being done, whichever suits them politically at the time, they all seem to recognise the necessity and value to the country of an important airport based in and serving Wales.

I ought to make it clear that I am apolitical and not seeking to make party political points. Opposition niggling would occur whoever ran the administration as that’s the nature of party politics.
