[textarea]Liverpool Airport to expand retail space

Liverpool Airport has embarked on a £12.4m reconfiguration of its departure terminal, which will boost retail space by over 45%. The year-long renovation programme began last November and will be completed this autumn. It will create a new central search area and a rebalancing of the airside / landside boundary from 50 / 50 to 80 / 20 in favour of landside.

Overall commercial space at the airport will grow from 55,000sq ft (5,111sq m) to 80,000sq ft (7,435sq m), equivalent to 22% of the total terminal floor space. The new commercial area will be split 15 / 85 in favour of airside. Additional high-street brands will be brought in and existing duty-free concessionaire World Duty Free (WDF) will open a new walk-through store in the reconfigured terminal.

Peel Airports group director of facilities Steve Gill said: ‘Retail is very important to us because it underpins our business plan. Passengers are wanting to spend less time at the airport so we have to make sure we get a return on our investment.’

The airport forecasts it will handle 5.4m passengers in the financial year 2009/10. It enjoys a high percentage of international passengers (85%), with easyJet and Ryanair its biggest airline partners.

[textarea]New facilities open at Liverpool Airport

Passengers flying off for some summer sun from Liverpool Airport will be able to enjoy further improvements to the hub after the completion of £12m in development. This week the new Estuary Kitchen and Grill opened in the departure lounge, following hot on the heels of a new Starbucks coffee outlet close to the airport information desk and the addition of famous high street sportswear company JD Sports’ new outlet in the departure lounge.

The Estuary Kitchen and Grill is the largest food retail area at the airport and replaces the previous passenger catering facility that had remained largely unchanged in over 10 years. Operated by food travel experts SSP, the new food retail area now covers 90sq m with a choice of freshly-prepared meals, drinks and snacks using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible.

Almost £1m has been invested in these latest improvements, which have also resulted in the creation of over 40 new jobs. Matthew Thomas, Commercial Director of Peel Airports said: ‘We have been working flat out to complete these developments to ensure our passengers can enjoy them during our busiest time of the year.'

‘Whilst the choice of catering has been improving steadily in recent years, these new food and beverage facilities also help to raise the quality of both the food and the eating environment, in areas that had not seen improvements for some time. The passenger reaction both to these changes and the work that commenced 18 months ago, has been very positive and demonstrates our commitment to offer passengers the best facilities available.’

Dixon Travel has recently opened a new store in the departure lounge at LPL.

If by departure lounge you mean airside - and I don't know the layout at Liverpool - then I would have thought they would be on a loser. Maybe if it were to be landside than they have a better chance of succeeding.

Sounds a little odd having a travel agent sat in the departure area beyond security. It must be landside surely?

I understand The Duty Free area has been expanded, I haven't seen it yet but will be travelling through terminal towards end of month so will report back.

Passed through airport this evening on way to Faro, walked through the new duty free shop which although I didn't stop to shop, I did notice it looked pretty smart none the less.

Liverpool Airport has recently completed the final stage of the 5M retail redevelopment in the departure lounge area.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) has announced the completion of a £5m ($6.7m) revamp of 2,000sqm within its departure lounge including improvements to retail.

The refurbishment is aimed at further improving the customer experience at the Northern UK airport. The latest phase in the 18-month programme of investments has cost over £2m and delivers an expansion and redesign of the World Duty Free retail area and the addition of a Traveller fashion store.

The new Traveller fashion store brings brands like Superdry to Liverpool Airport

The revamp has allowed World Duty Free to introduce MAC Cosmetics and Jo Malone to the airport for the first time with dedicated areas. Traveller brings several fashion houses to LJLA, including, Superdry, The North Face and Calvin Klein.

Works completed last year saw a number of new retail brands start operating, new shops, bars and restaurants open up and the refurbishment and upgrade of the upper floor of the airport’s departure lounge. In addition, 13 new flight information screens were installed throughout the departure lounge to keep passengers up to date with their departure.

“These latest improvements have been completed just in time as we enter the busiest part of the year for the airport, with hundreds of thousands of passengers expected to pass through during the busy summer months,” said Liverpool John Lennon Airport’s Commercial Director Lucy O’Shaughnessy.

“Having listened carefully to our passengers, we now believe we have passenger facilities here at Liverpool which are up there with the best of any UK regional airport. When combined with our recognised ‘Faster, Easier, Friendlier’ approach, Liverpool John Lennon Airport now gives a passenger experience second to none.”

The improvements have also generated 50 new jobs at the Airport over the past 18 months.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) expects a much busier summer this year as it continues its recovery from the covid pandemic and a £2m investment is now underway to introduce new passenger facilities that will also create a further 200 jobs at the airport.
With flights to over 60 destinations across Europe and the UK operating from Liverpool this summer, plus onward connections to a host of global destinations with the new Lufthansa Frankfurt service starting in May, passenger numbers at the airport are expected to be the highest since 2019.
Airlines commence their summer schedules at the end of March and work is well underway across parts of the airport terminal to enhance the shopping and dining experience for both departing and arriving passengers, creating new and improved passenger facilities in time for Easter and the first of the Summer season holiday periods.
In the Departure Lounge, leading airport food and beverage operator SSP, who already operate a range of units to cater for passengers at the airport, will shortly be opening a new ‘Upper Crust’ freshly baked baguette specialist store, whilst fashion sports retailer JD Sports are upgrading and expanding their premises to offer a wider range of sports clothing, footwear and accessories.
Popular High Street bakery chain Greggs will shortly be opening a store at the Airport for the first time, with a unit near the Arrivals area for returning passengers and those waiting to ‘meet and greet’ friends and relatives, along with a new WHSmith unit that includes a Marks & Spencer’s Food To Go offer for the first time too.
In addition, a number of existing retailers will be re-opening in time for the Easter holiday period and the increase in flights. These include designer clothing retailer Traveller and popular restaurant Frankie and Benny’s, as well as several other food and beverage areas to give passengers a wider choice of shopping, eating and drinking options whilst waiting for flight departures.
The Airport will also be introducing an enhanced parking offer for passengers with a new ‘Meet and Greet’ valet parking facility, enabling passengers to drop off their vehicles close to the terminal hassle free, with airport staff parking their car for them on site at the airport and then returning them ready for collection when passengers return.
In total, this £2m investment in these new facilities will also create a further 200 jobs at the airport, which is in addition to over 200 vacancies that a host of employers at the Airport recently filled, following a successful Recruitment Day held in January and attended by over 750 applicants.
The Airport is continuing to build on its faster, easier, friendlier passenger experience with these latest improvements complementing the many well known benefits of flying from Liverpool, with its lack of queues, reduced security processing times and one of the best on-time departure records of any UK airport.
Lucy O’Shaughnessy, LJLA’s Commercial Director commented, “It’s great to be opening units back up again and adding some fantastic new brands to the mix including Greggs and Upper Crust and we are really looking forward to welcoming back our regular passengers and hopefully many new ones too.
These great new additions combined with the return of many of our popular existing shopping and food and drink areas will mean passengers have an even greater choice of quality passenger facilities in time for Easter and the Summer season ahead, here at the region’s faster, easier, friendlier airport.”

Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) has awarded a new 10-year contract to existing food and beverage (F&B) outlet operator SSP Group.
SSP already operates eight F&B outlets out of a total of 10 at the airport and this new deal will extend its relationship with LJLA to 2036. Now the company is to spend £9m transforming its facilities.
This year sees the arrival of Jet2 at Liverpool with an extra 54 flights a week and this is expected to push annual passenger numbers back above the 5m mark. This, in turn, will see a surge in demand for F&B, as well as retail, in the departure lounge.
As part of its investment into its airport estate, SSP says all of its existing units will be refurbished, rebranded or extended, and additional outlets will be created. This will increase the capacity of SSP’s restaurants by almost half.
The initial phase of the expansion includes a high-end eatery called Sable & Co Bar and Kitchen. This will be located on the mezzanine level after World Duty Free and is scheduled to open in the spring.
It will offer a food and drink menu curated to showcase the best of local ingredients and suppliers, served in a “design-led” environment.
A new Burger King and a bar concept called Tap & Brew (which will serve a wide range of local craft beers alongside international favourites) opened at the end of last year.
Next phase will see a refurbishment of an existing Upper Crust and a Starbucks coffee shop. SSP will also create an American-style diner offering an all-day menu. And the popular Kissing Gate pub will be extended.

Kari Daniels, chief executive of SSP UK & Ireland, said: “This development is testament to the high standard of our offer over the time we’ve been operating at Liverpool John Lennon.
“We’ve built strong relationships with the team here, and we’re delighted to be working closely with them now to make the F&B offer at this great UK airport even better.
“We’re very much looking forward to welcoming passengers at our fabulous new bars, restaurants and cafes.”

In October 2023 LBN revealed LJLA had achieved pre-tax profits of £4.54m for the 12 months to March 31, 2023, after revenues more than doubled to £35.66m, signalling. A strong post-pandemic recovery.
Lucy O’Shaughnessy, commercial director at LJLA, added: “This investment will give the growing numbers of passengers choosing to fly from the region’s faster, easier, friendlier airport a wider choice of food and beverage facilities.”

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
