too cloudy alas as i was hoping for a glimpse of the Northern Lights even through I'm in the less than ideal position of a suburb in Manchester. What I would say, though, is some some of the clouds were a subtle shade of red and when I was out around 9pm, there were the odd clouds that were iridescent

My phone notifications were buzzing half the night with Amber and Red warnings showing claiming the ability to see the arora from most parts of the UK. As ever, I looked outside to see a swaith of gloomy murky cloud sat over the valley. No chance of seeing the Northern Lights here 😢 There was an unusual glow to the clouds but I couldn't decide whether or not it was anything to do with the arora.

A great view tonight of the crescent Moon, with Venus just below it. The remainder of the disc of the Moon is just visible as a phenomena known as 'earthshine'. This is sunlight reflected off the Earth, back onto the Moon and then back to Earth.
Having a look at the excellent freeware 'Stellaruim', I found that it replicated the 'earthshine' exactly as I saw it (note - this is a screenshot from the software, and not a photograph).

I can see some brightish objects near the moon right now. Unfortunately the sky where I am isn’t completely clear.
That's most likely Venus. Mars appears much smaller, but does have a red colour to it. Unfortunately, I don't believe the Uranous is visible to the naked eye.

Finding Alien Life 'A Matter of Time'

An intriguing report published by the BBC, showing many Scientists believe that with current and future technology we should discover alien life within a few years.

What form that life (single celled or intelligent) will take, if we do discover it only time will tell.

Geminids Meteor Shower

Due Thu and Fri and should be visible from around 19:30 on Thu. Looking at BBC weather, Thu seems the best with clear skies from around 20:00 (at least here in the East of England).

Aurora Borealis

Some of you, may have seen the Northern Lights last night. If you did and want to see them again, or you missed them, they should be on display again tonight over much of the UK.
The early hours of the morning, away from light pollution should give the best views.

I got a notification from an app I have saying the lights were likely to be visible throughout the UK but I couldn't see anything, then this morning the local FB sites were full of pictures taken locally, probably about an hour or so after I looked. Anyway, it's been red alert for the aurora all day today during daylight hours but it has just dipped to amber so unless it peps back up there's less chance of seeing it this evening but fingers crossed anyway.

Currently the alert level is down to yellow so only possible to see the aurora from the northern most tip of the UK.

Debris fell from a rocket explosion over the Caribbean yesterday, causing numerous flight diversions and some airliners to declare fuel emergencies

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
