Long haul operations from LBA

Incidentally I’ve mentioned it on here many years ago, a friend of mine was FO for Qatar on the 777/787 (now back in Blighty as capt on the 320) he’s local to Leeds, loves the place but said he wouldn’t want to try land the dreamer in either direction.

I can confirm that Qatar will not operate the 787 into LBA due to their self imposed operating restrictions regarding runway length required.

This doesn't necessarily impact the possibility of other airlines using the 787 from LBA.

Makes you wonder how their restrictions compare to other airlines. Wouldn't you assume they are similar? It's an important question as I thought the 787 was they key to long haul ops from LBA.

I wonder, with BRS been similar to LBA, if given the closure of DSA, we may see TUI operate a similar programme to what they did at DSA.

They operated a Cancun & Melbourne Florida from DSA, would be great to see that operation come over, also they normally operate 10:30/11am and land at 6am ish, so again could work in our congested terminal.

So those times are perfect in regards to passenger experience.

They are less so for Ramp space and congestion. I would say a 0730am arrival would be better suited for LBA.

Highly unlikely to happen anyway in my humble opinion. The current infrastructure really doesn't lend itself to wide body ops

I imagine long haul ops will go to EMA who "lost" them to DSA a few years ago.

EMA is close radius of BHX long haul. Maybe they will just put DSA customers into BHX or MAN. Be great if eventually they would try it. But agreed terminal not best condition yet.

Judging by comments regarding Qatar Airways operating criteria for their 787s I'm not sure that Tui would consider using their 787s into LBA.

No that's unlikely too as TUI have used BRS for long haul ops with a similar runway capability.

MAN can have IPS, LBA PIA haha its a big market that could work well out of LBA esp now we have the terminal improvements under way, just need an aircraft like a B787 on the route. Do PIA still only use 777-200/300s?

PIA only use B777-200/300 which they will not use at LBA. They are not likely to be around long enough to buy 787s. Their aim to serve CDG, LHR, MAN and BHX seems woefully optimistic given how many airframes are currently grounded.
