An equally random comment but which, for me, brings intense pride as someone born in Birmingham but in which i have not lived in now for nigh on 78 years...

But i am still intensely proud of my birth city.

For the past month or so i have watched and listened to Karen Carney, the celebrated woman's footballer, as she tackled the challenge of competing in Strictly Come Dancing. Humble, eloquent and committed to succeed.

It was only then after she danced to a Peaky Blinders theme that i found out that she was born in Birmingham, Hall Green, i think.

What a tremendous woman this is. As a brummie i am proud of her and i would hope all brummies are.

Young people need role models, both in life and in sport. There cannot be anyone's ambitions to aspire to that are better than hers

This woman is in the top drawer.

Well done Karen Carney. If anyone deserves to lift that Glitter Ball, it is you

I agree with your remarks entirely. I would correct you in that Karen comes from Kingshurst i understand.

I recieved some difficult news this week of a medical nature. That news relates to Heart surgery and the denial of that surgery. I have a long standing issue re; Brain tumour, benign but troublesome, this trouble is preventing open heart procedures given the risk of a bleed upon the brain, a heart lung machine takes on life preserving function while the heart is stopped during surgery. Well, that news shook me to my core and I retreated to my past in Music. Whilst at school ( kids school ) I studied music and learned about the healing properties, learned the Trumpet and the art of Conducting. Adult Law School gave more but this is not the place. With the bad news, I put a CD of Vivaldi on my machine and with headphones ( very necessary ) and my conductors baton, went back to school. I felt so much better after an hour of heavenly music of the 17th century. It is not drum and bass, R&B or any other kind of street music, just the purity of sound in a musical construct. Not wishing to depress anyone here, I just like to say that with bad news there is always a place to go. Blessings to you all.

Oh Jenny I am so sorry to hear of your latest news but, as regular followers will know, you are a lady with amazing strength of will and mind. I am sure that many others will follow me in sending our best wishes to you.
You are so lucky to have such a fondness for music and I am happy that you are able to enjoy the works of such wonderful composers as Vivaldi.

Sholto, thank you my kind sire, my issues are nothing compared to those dealing with Cancer. I can be repaired but with risk to life, any resilience is survival, basic stuff, a human wants to live as all life does, it is instictive. My music is important because I was educated at a time in life that enabled absorbsion of the theory and mechanics of sound with harmony. I might give a lecture on the subject of music and relations to health and wellbeing. This is not the place. My discipline is Constitutional Law, but Music is a passion that I live by and enjoy. I thank you for your thoughts and concerns.

I've heard that the tallest towers will be circa 125m which is pretty big. With so much work put in to this already I'd like to think that BHX have already been consulted?

I think architecture is always something that will divide opinion and this is definitely not a design that could be considered boring. Take a look at aerial photos of Stadium of Light, Pride Park, Riverside, St Mary's, King Power etc and they're essentially the same stadium just with different coloured seats.

Love it or hate it there's no doubt that it will be instantly recognisable and I think (hope) that the reality will look so much better than the pictures.

Karen Carney is definitely a local to be proud of. An excellent football career and I think she's just as good as a commentator/pundit.

Whilst it comes as no surprise it's still sad to hear the confirmation that Coventry Airport will be closing next year. A friend of mine used it once when Thomsonfly had their base, Wizz also had flights to Gdansk and Katowice for a while.

Sad indeed I can remember from the dim and distant the annual Coventry Air Display displays particularly featuring the the Vulcan been thrown around the sky and the Lightnings vertical climb on take off.

For any one interested, this was the flights Coventry used to have from 2004 to 2008 in its hayday!!

Thomson Fly with their B733s and B735s dominated, and as Ray mentioned flights by Wizz Air, along with Hapag-Lloyd Express to Cologne.

always used it be a bit of a jugling act by Birmimgham ATC to squeeze the Coventry traffic in between their own arrivals/departures!!

Yes, rollo, me too!. I'm that old!.
I recall they had a King's Cup Air Race in bygone times, and well remember getting to Baginton for the air shows. An aircraft dump too, which had an old Shackleton i recall.

Sadly, I was working in the vacinity when a B737 crashed transporting sheep during a vocal protest against live animal transport. The airport was not just GA or historical movements such as Air Atlantique.

I remember that crash getting much TV coverage. The protestors were objecting to Veal Calves i believe.

I stand corrected, thank you. I recall our local farms here in Redditch were besieged by protesters it was a bit like Greenham Common at times.
I've only been in Redditch for 25 years, so I'm still a blow-in and cannot remember that.
I do remember protests @ Bagington as I was contracting for National Packaging at the time who used temporary offices within the airport whilst their distribution warehouse was being built. A struggle to get in to work some days.

I was working for a company on Weights Lane, opposite the current Swimming Pool and athletics stadium complex. A sizeable sheep farming operation was located there and I had a battle to get to my office, protesters blocking access to all vehicles and purple ribbons tied to everything that resembled vegetation !

Birmingham be proud of a wonderful and so humble Brummie - Karen Carney, who with Carlos Gu won Strictly Come Dancing tonight.

So pleased that she won, it was definitely deserved. Aside from her dancing ability she comes across as a genuinely nice person.

I hope the city recognises her achievement and honours her in an appropriate way.

I wouldn't hold your breath on that one, Birmingham seems to have an inability to capitalise on these things.

Absolutely nothing when the Lord of the Rings films were in full swing, as far as I'm aware there is nothing in Central Birmingham linked to the success of Peaky Blinders and don't even get me started on The Crown Pub.... THE home of heavy metal

At Least BHX is doing it's bit with the Peaky Blinders themed bar and local company The Indian Brewery on the way.

Great interview below with her passion really coming through.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
