Central walkway works have started, albeit slowly. mainly fencing being put up.

The expansion videos are all excellent and this latest one is no exception.

I note this walkway will cost £6.5 million, a bit less than the western walkway which is much longer but the central walkway is two storeys.

The airport speaks of an airbridge from this walkway in the future for potential long haul - one was certainly shown when the original pictures were published last year that are still on the airport website. The fact that they aren't going ahead with it right away might suggest that there won't be long haul in 2015 as has been mooted in some quarters.

Incidentally, I wish they'd stop calling them walkways. To me walkways are those external metal-covered paths that take passengers along the concrete/tarmac to their aircraft from the terminal and back. The western walkway and particularly the central walkway are more in the nature of piers. The term walkway suggests a basic covered path.

reading in the weston mercury planning that the north side road non material amendment concerning parking layout. also southside roundabout

Press release confirming construction of the central walkway is officially underway. There's also an interesting walk through video showing the passenger journey. It all looks great!

It appears the walkway won't, initially at least, have an air bridge.

The video clearly shows an airbridge!

When the camera gets to the end of the pier by the vending machines it then cuts to the next scene where the passenger is clearly de-planing from a Thomson a/c via an airbridge....

Anyway I'm envious of the expansion you have going on down there. If only LBA could pull its finger out!!

Now the weather has quietened down for a while there's not been a lot of major news at BRS this winter - passenger numbers continue to steadily increase each month which is obviously important - so I thought I'd mention the central walkway again, or central pier as I think it should be called as walkways suggest basic pathways.

Construction work was started last September and when I drove past the airport today I noticed that the framework has really started to take shape.

I believe that it's scheduled to open this summer, presumably before the main season.

Looks like the airport is making good on its promise to press ahead with the hotel on its own. They have submitted a new planning application (14/P/0314/F) for the hotel after changing the exterior design as I understand it. Everything else remains pretty much the same as before.

Has anybody had chance to get any photos of the construction work of the new walkway? I know some airports can be cautious about people talking photos but it would be great to see how the expansion is progressing.

It's possible to see the skeleton from outside the airport perimeter but I'm not sure how good a picture would be from a fair distance away and possibly with obstructions in between. A view from airside inside the departure area would be adjacent to it but that would rely on someone flying.

When the western walkway was under construction a few years ago I'm pretty sure the airport put its own pictures of the progress on its website. Maybe someone from there will read this and do the same with the current construction.

Not much up yet. Just the steel framework has been installed. They are still talking of a June completion date.

tpm posted the below in this thread last Thursday (20 February).

This appeared in last week's Bristol Post.

The minutes of the last airport consultative committee meeting on 29 January merely said 'the matter was progressing'.

The hotel site will be either at the current old terminal staff car park or the front of the main terminal in the short term car park. Both were suggested a few years ago. any idea which site is on the planning application

The Bristol Post report (see link in my previous post) shows the hotel set back from and to the west of the proposed western extension to the terminal building.

The plans for Bristol airport are just amazing and it's nice to see the airport authority progressing with the plans to make it happen.

Yes i remember this one. By the control tower. So may be the staff carpark will remain. For years they have threatened that staff parking will be moved to silver zone. That will add another 20 mins to our start times.

The muti story car parking opposite the main terminal building will spoil the look of the place imho. The best thing about Bristol is the bright entrance to the building. A carpark opposite will reduce natural light severely and give a sense of closed spaces.

I suppose the downward sloping nature of the ground to the north of the terminal building will mitigate some of the effects of 'overpowering'.

Definitely impressed with the plans. Apologies if it's been posted before but this is the first time I've seen a fly through of the central walkway, it'll be great when done.

This is the Central Walkway that is due to open this summer - work is well under way.

The airport has listed a summary of planned developments on its website - there are also many pictures and animations - which I've copied below. This was published in 2009 and some of the developments are now in place such as the Western Walkway and additional aircraft stands there.

[textarea]Development summary

Expansion of the existing terminal building, with an extension to the east (6,700 square metres) and west (3,600 square metres) of the existing terminal to just over double its current overall floor area. This will include an increase in check-in desks (48 to 67) and an increase in security machines (7 to 12).

A two level extension to the recently approved Western Apron Walkway, providing access to a Western Pier, serving six aircraft stands.

A two level Eastern Apron Walkway, including replacement of the existing walkway to stands two to five. The Eastern Apron Walkway will serve eight aircraft stands with passenger pre-board zones adjacent to each stand, including a central gate lounge serving two of these stands.

A two level Eastern Apron Pier serving four aircraft stands.

Expansion of the aircraft parking apron to provide a total of 33 aircraft stands (compared with 27 aircraft stands available in summer 2008 and 26 aircraft stands included in the Western Walkway permitted development scheme).

An extension to the Western Apron will provide six new aircraft stands; extension of the Eastern Apron will provide three new aircraft stands and a reconfiguration of the existing Eastern Apron is proposed. The layout of the stands will be configured to minimise ground noise.

Two multi-storey car parks, one with four levels and one with five levels, will be located north of the terminal to provide short and long stay parking and facilities for the pick up and set down of passengers. Together these will have a capacity for approximately 3,850 cars.

The uppermost floor of one of the car parks will accommodate a public transport interchange for buses and taxis. The pick up and set down facilities and the public transport interchange will replace the existing forecourt and pick up and drop off car park and be configured to meet the latest security requirements for vehicle access to new airport developments.

A covered pedestrian link bridge will connect the public transport interchange and the multi-storey car park with the terminal building forecourt.

A new three-storey administration building, with a floor space of 4,800 square metres, will be constructed just to the north west of the expanded terminal. The current administration building will be demolished.

A new underground fuel storage depot will be constructed within the vicinity of the western perimeter of the north side car park. This will include the provision of three tanks having a capacity of 1,200 cubic metres each.

The north side internal access road layout will be reconfigured to accommodate the new infrastructure and buildings, to improve vehicle circulation through the airport complex and enhance safety and security.

The north side surface car park will be reconfigured to suit the new buildings and road layout and to maximise the use of the area available. This will include the resurfacing of the car park to improve the drainage arrangements.

The Silver Zone car park will be redeveloped and extended to provide long stay car parking for approximately 12,000 cars. A 12 hectare area outside the existing operational boundary but adjacent to the Silver Zone car parking area will be used for overflow parking during the peak summer season.

A new Silver Zone reception building will be provided in the centre of the car park and the existing reception facility will be demolished and removed. Staff car parking will be located within a dedicated area of the Silver Zone car park.

Noise attenuation walls will be erected immediately to the north of the three new east apron aircraft stands and around the extended western apron.

There will be a number of support and other ancillary developments and facilities, including a flight catering building, airline support building, and Motor Transport building.

There will also be miscellaneous operational amendments to runway ends and taxiways.

Landscaping and nature conservation enhancement measures are included in the application.

The main airport access road will be widened.

An on-site hotel development will be the subject of a separate planning application.

With the exception of the overflow car parking area on the south-side, all development will occur within the airport’s boundary, concentrated on existing operational areas.

No extension of the runway is proposed.

The development will not be constructed all at once. Development will occur incrementally to meet the actual passenger demand over time.[/textarea]
As this is information that the airport is obviously keen to get into the public domain as widely as possible I believe it will not be concerned about any breach of copyright.

The original can be found at: http://www.bristolairport.co.uk/about-u ... mmary.aspx

The western extension of the main terminal will be the first segment of that part of the development and a contractor was given given the preparatory work a couple of years ago.

http://www.hydrock.com/hydrock-appointe ... esign.html

BRS also appointed 13 contractors in two frameworks (a device created to avoid lengthy EU procurement rules) last year who will be involved in the various elements of the airport expansion.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
