Does anyone know what the concourse cafe is?

It's in the old terminal, In what used to be the waiting area. They have redesigned the old checkin area adding a hot food outlet along with booths, tables and vending area. It is mailny for staff use but if your quick you may be able to see it before it's closed off to the public behind swipe only access doors, some nice decor has been used using old aircraft parts.

The whole of the new terminal is undergoing interior renovations with meeting/conference rooms, a new security/ lost property desk and a new waiting area.

With the amount of money being spent on the redesign I have a feeling the old terminal is here to stay a fair few years!

Many thanks for that big g. From what you say I agree that it may be some time before the old terminal is demolished to help make way for the extended eastern apron and eastern walkway.

I'm really impressed by what Bristol Airport is trying to achieve. How much of what is in the video is now open? Rest assured what you have (or are going to have) is very much admired by our Leeds forum members who can only dream of facilities of such a high standard.

The outside of the building first shown in the video is the original 'new' terminal opened in 2000. There is also a single storey extension to the left of the main entrance at the beginning of the video that has been open for several years. Behind it are two larger structures that are yet to be built and form part of the extension to be commenced next month.

Once inside the main entrance on the video everything is in place until about half way to the stairs, albeit most of the seating and tree shown are not as shown. The last section shown of the ground floor and upstairs including the outside terrace will be new.

BRS did complete a new central pier this summer which can be viewed in this video (click on the Central Walkway video link to the right of the page).

New extension at eastern end of terminal building

I asked BRS whether it really was intended to permit smoking on the first floor outside terrace as suggested in the airport's walk-through video and received this reply:

To confirm, this is not an exact plan but is used to deliver an impression of how the extension will look and what will be on offer.

With regard to your feedback regarding provision for smokers I can confirm that any additional provision will be separated from non smoking areas and identified as such for the convenience of smokers and non smokers alike. Airside smoking provision is very well received by smokers using the aiport and additional provision should enable this to be better managed and give flexibility to any possible building development that could impact current airside smoking spaces.

Hopefully this should mean that for those lovely days of summer when the terrace is in use non smokers should not be impacted by those that choose to smoke.

I'm not sure I quite follow what the writer intended to convey. It looks as though the writer is saying that the terrace will be split into smoking and non-smoking areas.

The writer did conclude on a positive note (of course smokers will probably regard the above paragraph as positive) by saying: Hopefully there will be more good news regarding the development of routes to match the expanded terminal in the not too distant future.

[textarea]Bristol Airport tenders retail opportunities amid terminal expansion

Bristol Airport is seeking expressions of interest ahead of a tender for retail opportunities at its soon to be extended terminal.

Up to seven new units will be created, totalling more than 1,000sq m of floor space, when the £8.6 million project is completed. Retail categories to be tendered include fashion, accessories, jewellery, watches and gifting.

The extension is the first major expansion of the terminal building since it opened in 2000 and follows the opening of a £6.5 million central walkway earlier this year. Planning permission to enhance facilities to handle 10 million passengers a year was granted in February 2011.[/textarea]

Terminal expansion to the east

I was at BRS this week and noticed some diggers at work in the place where the terminal extension will be built.

I presume this is the preparatory work prior to construction commencing - due to be completed next summer.

[textarea]Bristol Airport Makes Waves in UK, Introduces Satellite Navigation

Bristol Airport has become the first major U.K. airport to introduce RNAV1 Performance Based Navigation (PBN) Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (STARs). The system uses satellite navigation coupled with technology fitted to the aircraft, which replaces traditional ground beacons and landing systems.

Arrival routes for the airport have begun using the satellite technology in the hopes of cutting airline fuel costs, enhancing safety and bringing quieter approaches to communities under the flight path.[/textarea]

The helical/spiral monument at the first roundabout on the A38 at the the entrance to the airport has had some sort of facelift. The edge of the spiral is now brightly lit in greenish blue LED light. looks nice after dark.

See new flag poles too outside the OTB.

Let's hope it's not mistaken for a UFO after dark.

This week I saw two prominent Union flags being flown near the spot where initial work is being undertaken in connection with the terminal extension. I can't remember seeing those before although I might not have been sufficiently observant. I don't think you are referring to these - some way from the old terminal.

It would be nice to think that this increased interest in vexillology is a precursor to some news that will merit putting the flags out.

The lights on the spiral and the flags were installed for the NATO summit. And appeared a few days before it took place. I like the lights on the spiral, they also change colour every few minutes.

[textarea]Bristol Airport opens fire training facility

On Tuesday 7 October 2014 Bristol Airport’s Rescue and Fire-Fighting Service (RFFS) opened a new £950,000 fire-fighting training facility, situated on the south side of the Airport site.

Bristol Airport commissioned Simulation, a specialist fire training company, to provide a state-of-the-art fire training facility, comprising equipment simulating a Boeing 737, an R27 helicopter, and a villa complex. All built within the Airport’s dedicated fire training ground.

The aircraft, helicopter and villa complex can be used for numerous fire training scenarios whilst being controlled and monitored remotely. All of the equipment can be set alight using an eco-friendly LPG gas fuelled system. This enables a number of fire and rescue scenarios to be recreated using the aircraft, helicopter or building in any combination, encompassing all of the scenarios necessary for a dedicated airport fire team training to face any fire and rescue situation.

The new facility enables the RFFS team to maintain the high levels of competence and aviation training required by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Gary O’Neill, Bristol Airport’s Chief Fire Officer said:

“This is a significant investment by Bristol Airport and demonstrates our continued commitment to safety and ongoing investment in employee training.

“This facility means a great deal to the RFFS team as it ensures we have the best available facilities to train with. It will also, in the longer term host training in partnership with other local emergency services to help maintain our position as one of the best performing airport fire services in the country”.

This latest development follows the recently opened central walkway which was completed ahead of the busy summer holiday period to meet passenger and airline demand.

The construction of an eastern terminal extension also commenced in September. The £8.6m project – the first major expansion of the terminal building since it opened in 2000 - will be finished in summer 2015.[/textarea]

BRS press release at http://www.bristolairport.co.uk/media-c ... ining.aspx

Didn't they used to have a Trident fuselage for fire training at one time?

fire training
you are right jim. they had a trident at one stage. it was used in a episode of casualty with a plane crash. thye filming was good, and wow what can be done behind the lens as well.
that was scrapped and since then a mock up of a b767 has been used.
off subject slightly. the filton simulator and all the gear was sold and assembled at southend airport. sorry for the drift.

Someone on another website was asking about the number of based aircraft at BRS next summer and the number of stands.

I believe that currently the aircraft numbers should be something like this but I'm not sure how many stands there are now.

easyJet 12 x A319/320

Ryanair 4 x B 738

Thomson 2 x B 752 and 1 x B 738

Thomas Cook 2 x A 321

bmi regional 4/5? x E 135/145 including the one operating for Brussels Airlines (also one on the South Side for the Airbus corporate shuttle?)

Also a KLM E 190 nightstopping

Can anyone add anything or modify this?

Ray Finkle your link isn't working for me but here's the apron plan.

The link from Ray is no longer working for me but it was last night.

A poster on another forum who I believe works at BRS says there are currently 28 stands.

indeed there are 28 usable stands. The poster on the other forum is myself

there may appear to be more on paper but because of wing-tip clearances that has to be considered, usable stands is 28. So it is very limited with what we can park at BRS. But like I said on another forum, I feel that the stands could be much better utilised during the day at BRS rather than just focusing on the night-stoppers. But thats just my thoughts!

Good to see you back here posting ezy_brs and thank you for the information.

I might venture to suggest that you may have twigged that our alter egos have been having this conversation on that other forum. ;)

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
