dont forget the traic lights were in use as well. they were used when planes lined up for take off on rwy 27.
yes the a38 was diverted due to the cat 3 system installed. if the a38 was left where it was then the landing system picked up false messages from traffic on the a38.
the traffic lights were not used for much landing traffic.

Ah, thanks for that. I had it in my mind that the A38 lights stopped road traffic when jets were landing but thinking about it, it must have been when they were taking off on 27, not landing on it, as you point out.

Can you remember when the A38 traffic lights were first installed? They were certainly there in the 1990s and remained until the road was diverted but I can't recall them being there in the 1980s (the earlier 1980s years anyway) and before that.

the lights as you said, were put up in the 60s, cant remrmber what year.mind you they were only to be used with the odd big jets at the time, not many of them then.can you remember when a jet was parked, no body checked inside. it was on a delivery flt to the middle east, but landed with some problem, and was parked for a few weeks. it took off on rwy09 and took all the hedge out by the a38, that was one time they could have done with the lights onh for take off. cant remember what plane type, but it sure was heavy running out of runway.it turned out the plane was fully loaded with guns and ammunition. when a subject comes up it brings the mind to think back.sorry i gone on a bit.

Thanks eastcoaster. I vaguely remember the incident but in those days I had much less time to indulge any aviation interests.

Eastern terminal extension now in full swing. Lots of activity. Lorry loads being delivered daily. Many workers on site. Working on almost every floor. Come summer it should be up and running. Looking good for the future.

Yes, I agree. I was at the airport this morning and the extension is coming along well. The minutes of the airport consultative committee meeting held on 28 January have been published on the airport's website and it looks as though the terminal extension to the west will be following. This is the relevant minute:

The Eastern Terminal Extension would open this summer and the Western Terminal Extension was currently under consideration with plans to include a new security search area. Preparations were underway for construction of an on-site hotel.

The old terminal building has detailed maps of the Western terminal extension planned for 2016 completion. Big posters placed in the revamped lobby.

Spent a while studying it yesterday. Afraid i could not make any sense of it. Lots of details about changes to security searches etc....nothing about arrivals halls or atleast i could not read it from the drawings.

By the way is Bristol Airport the only place where the terminology ' security search comb' is used?
To me it sounds like its a slang that has gained legitimacy as they now have signs that say it in bold letters around the place. Seen that phrase anywhere else in use in such an official manner?

The airfield map shows the areas of the taxiways they are going to widen and also the turning circles to allow the 787 to operate into BRS.

The arrivals hall/ immigration is currently/ has had a makeover allowing for more pax, they also have the immigration hall that was added when the western walkway was built but currently sees little use.

Like you I have no idea why they call it the Search Comb.

with the turning circles and taxiway work planned.is this speculation or do they know something is in the pipeline. would brs spend money on something that would not need money spent on.
wow what a question, and i wonder if any one has an answer.

Is there a copy of this floating around that I can have a look at?

aviador i dont know if there is one floating around. this one is on the notice board in the old terminal.so its staff only where it is. there might be one in the local council planning office, which is north somerset council.
i dont know if this was in the original planning application,or something added at a later date.

Uploaded a photo of the fabulously named security search comb. Its in the Bristol airport photo gallery. If someone would bring it to this thread. I don't know how. Similarphoto in any other airport calling it a "comb".

Some airports refer to them as a "security comb" in their internal memorandums but it is unusual for airports to call it a comb in public facing areas. Most airports refer to them as Central Search Zones (CSZ)

As for the picture, the area looks very bitty compared to the usual sleek look of the terminal we're normally familiar with.

Just to clarify. This is not a public facing area. Its the staff search area.

Thanks for that - I was beginning to wonder where it was. The public search area is much larger of course. I always thought in terms of search stations or is that a term for the individual search 'desks'? BRS now seems to have quite a large number when they are all open.

With regards to the turning circles and taxiway widening , is there a time frame for its completion? I was just thinking that thomsons summer 2016 plans are usually released in the spring so is possible we may see some movement regarding the return of long haul flying

Maybe someone who works at the airport can answer that one.

When the master plan was published a decade ago it accepted that anything wider than a B 767 could not use the full length parallel taxiway because wings would overhang the fence that separates the taxiway from the public highway. The master plan said then that turning circles (to facilitate backtracking the runway) would be introduced in the first instance when larger aircraft became available.

Last year it was suggested by a poster on this website, I forgot who, that the taxiway problem had been overcome. I really don't know the current situation as to whether turning circles will be necessary after all. I said previously that I hope that the reason TOM has not introduced its 787 (after its MD said in 2010 that it would do so at BRS) is because of an infrastructure problem that can be fixed rather than a blanket decision not to use the type at BRS at all (it has been suggested in one or two quarters that the series of heavy landings on 09 by 767s might have caused TOM to think again about the 787).

You may remember it from the video the airport produced which was linked in this thread several months ago.

The construction of the extension is well under way now and should be open later this summer.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
