dont forget the traic lights were in use as well. they were used when planes lined up for take off on rwy 27.
yes the a38 was diverted due to the cat 3 system installed. if the a38 was left where it was then the landing system picked up false messages from traffic on the a38.
the traffic lights were not used for much landing traffic.
Ah, thanks for that. I had it in my mind that the A38 lights stopped road traffic when jets were landing but thinking about it, it must have been when they were taking off on 27, not landing on it, as you point out.
Can you remember when the A38 traffic lights were first installed? They were certainly there in the 1990s and remained until the road was diverted but I can't recall them being there in the 1980s (the earlier 1980s years anyway) and before that.
