Drop Off Parking

T
he BBC local tv main early evening news bulletin 'Points West' got in on the act last night. They had a reporter at the airport telling everyone about the price increases. The reporter said that BRS declined to put up anyone for interview but said they were looking to reduce traffic congestion (perhaps it was as well there was no airport spokesperson because there might have been on display a version of Pinocchio's nose).

Incidentally, 'Points West' went to town on this but completely ignored the TOM 787 in its early evenning news bulletin the night before.

BBC Radio Bristol, invariably bringing up the rear, mentioned the drop off parking charges on their 8am news bulletin today.

To be fair, headlines could've been worse, pointing out the £50 charge for (just above) an hour of parking ..

Hilton Worldwide embarks on partnership with CIMC to develop its first modular hotel at Bristol Airport

Hilton Worldwide has partnered with modular building provider CIMC to develop the first hotel at Bristol Airport under its economy Hampton by Hilton brand. Financed and owned by CIMC, the hotel will be managed by Hilton Worldwide, drawing on its extensive experience of operating airport hotels at many of the world’s top transport hubs.

The announcement marks a strategic partnership between Hilton Worldwide and CIMC. CIMC’s innovative modular technique significantly reduces the time taken for construction by manufacturing and assembling portions of the hotel, including guest rooms and hallways, in China, before transporting them to the final site for assembly. The model helps ensure consistent quality and accelerates the build schedule on site, a benefit for developers and investors in mature and emerging markets alike.

Patrick Fitzgibbon, senior vice president, development, Europe & Africa, Hilton Worldwide said, “CIMC’s capacity to deliver modular sections of the building to the final hotel site offers an incredible opportunity to overcome many of the challenges faced during construction.

“Alongside potential time and cost efficiencies, CIMC’s ability to provide senior debt to developers using its modular building technique underpins its robust growth model, and we are seeing more and more opportunity for this structure in mature markets such as the UK, and developing economies, most notably in Africa.”

Robert Sinclair, Chief Executive Officer at Bristol Airport said: “The development of a high quality on-site hotel to be operated under such a world-renowned brand will be a very welcome addition to our facilities for the growing number of passengers choosing to fly to and from Bristol Airport. Alongside the terminal extension currently under construction, this is another statement of our ambition to be a world class regional airport serving the South West of the UK.”

The 201 guest room property is expected to open in Q4 2016 and will be the first hotel at the Airport. Bristol is the only top ten UK airport to see passenger growth every year since 2009 and saw record volumes last year when 6.7 million people passed through the terminal, making it the UK’s ninth busiest passenger airport . It was also named the UK’s most punctual airport for the second year running, in a league table measuring on-time performance based on data compiled from over 43 million flight records by aviation data provider, OAG.

Karen Liu, Global Head of CIMC MBS said “CIMC MBS are very happy to be working alongside Hilton Worldwide and Bristol Airport to develop a quality hotel with the strength of the Hilton network and the continuing growth of Bristol Airport. This is a key milestone in the ongoing relationship with Hilton Worldwide and the first of a number of Hilton hotels CIMC will build in 2016. Under the leadership of Paul Blackmore CIMC are focusing on Hilton opportunities across Europe, Middle East and Africa.”

CIMC MBS is the modular division of parent company CIMC Group, the $12Bn USD turnover Chinese PLC. The funding for the scheme will be coming from the Internal Financing Division, CIMC Capital. CIMC have capabilities to own, develop, fund and supply modular units to hotel projects and are actively pursuing development opportunities with Hilton Worldwide in multiple countries.

Hampton by Hilton has grown exponentially across Europe, where it now boasts more than 100 hotels trading or under development. Hampton by Hilton Bristol Airport will incorporate flexible meeting spaces for business guests, a 24-hour fitness room, parking for 120 cars, in addition to complimentary WiFi and Hampton’s On the House® hot breakfast.

This is a BRS press release (see link immediately above).

It can be seen from the pictures that at the moment the hotel appears to be no more than a pile of shipping containers.
If you take a look here

gives look at what the inside may be like, it seems that they come to site fully fitted out and finished with no further internal works required.

With the planned Thomson 787 Dreamliner flying out of Bristol twice a week next summer, I wonder if the airport will add an air-bridge to the central pier as depicted on the video fly-through.

They certainly indicated it was their intention to install an airbridge when the time was right. Let's hope the time is right now.

I could see one being installed on the western walkway for stand 26, but the 787 is to big for stand 4 with the apron in the current config, if they did put it on stand 4 it would close stands 8&9.

What a lot of portacabins? I'm sure it will look nothing like it does at the moment once it's complete. :nailbiting:

Fascinating. Thanks, big g.

I see the airport have put in a Screening Opinion as to whether an Environmental Impact Assessment is required to be submitted to extend the existing silver zone car park with North Somerset planning. I have had a quick look at it looks like they are looking for about 3650 parking places, full doc can be found here

http://wam.n-somerset.gov.uk/MULTIW...contentType=application/pdf&pageCount=16&sid=

Looks like they want this before a multi car park is built as they feel a cost return on the multi build cost to a parking charges is not very viable.

Looks like they are keen to get rid of the off site car parking as well.

That's a bit naughty. The initial planning consent for this extension to the Silver Zone car park was on the basis that it would be brought into use after phase one of the multi storey car park was completed. Now they are asking for the the Silver Zone surface extension to precede the multi storey car park, basically on the grounds that it would be more profitable taking into account the cost of build and what they would charge to park there.

They must have had a costing estimate before they even announced a multi storey car park, albeit it was nearly a decade ago when the idea first surfaced. Having had a good kicking in the local press for reducing the drop-off car park time by 50% this will be another own goal in the airport PR stakes.

The document makes a big deal about how it will help with unauthorised off-site car parking :ROFLMAO: (although there may something to it of course if this allowed them to add lower-cost car parking options).

Also, if I'm reading this right, they're not asking for it to be built before work on the multi-storey car park starts, but only to allow construction to begin before construction of the first phase of the multi-storey car park is completed. So might this mean that start on the MSCP could be imminent?

I hope it is but I fear that the Silver Zone extension might mean that there is no urgency to build the multi storey car park if they can get the Silver Zone provision extended which is apparently a cheaper option and may well help to fund, if only indirectly, the multi storey. One way to ensure that the multi storey was not slowly bringing up the rear - after all why rush to build it if you have a cheaper option bringing in the money? - would be to link S Z extension consent with a time scale for the multi storey; if that is legally possible - I'm no planning expert.

If this is a genuine attempt by the airport to mitigate parking overcrowding then I will gladly withdraw my earlier remarks, but I will need convincing by actions not words. Much as I admire the BRS management going back over many years I do believe that at times they seem too ready to see the car parks as a ready source of cash and, although I realise the way smaller regional airports are funded these days, there does sometimes appear to be an element of profiteering with car parking.

I hope plans for the multi storey have not been put on hold for long. The additional parking offered is not so much the issue as the new drop off/transport hub that is to be built on the upper level.

The current drop off area is a bit unsatisfactory and struggles to cope during busy periods. One would hope it's be next in line for an upgrade.

Just to add to my last regarding the silver z parking the airport are all so requesting to resurface the land around the old pens next to the A38 by the roundabout,

info on that is here,

http://wam.n-somerset.gov.uk/MULTIWAM/doc/Application Form-2545053.pdf?extension=.pdf&id=2545053&appid=1001&location=VOLUME4&contentType=application/pdf&pageCount=2&sid=

Regarding North Somerset and plans etc and the Airport they like to use two different name some go under Bristol Airport and some under Bristol International Airport so you need to check both names to see or be up to date regarding.

On another note has anyone found out what the large excavations are for in / near the short stay car park.

I suppose it would be better to complete the silver zone extension first before all the disruption that would come from building the multi storey car park ( I'm assuming those car parks would be closed during construction)

Now that the majority of staff have been transferred to Silver Zone from the Old Terminal, this could be the reason there looking to expand.

i beleave the old terminal car park is going to be used for long stay parking, this could be due to the multi-storey being built.

the staff car park outside the Old Terminal is rumoured to become solely Car Rental car park, as the bit where was being dug up is now an exit for the short stay pick up/drop off. So they were laying the cabling required for it. but why so deep? I don't know. I did notice some reinforcing steel going into the groundworks around this exit and there is known to be sink hole problems across the whole airport site, so maybe prevention is better than cure?

Just a thought on this big hole and reinforcing going in the ground in /next to the short stay car park, looking at the finished plans layout for the airport the road layout will change to accommodate the multi car park and run in front of the new hotel, so could this work be for new (later on) over head road signage. As they do like to put large mass at the base of these things!

This is about the best set of plans I can fined showing all new builds,

http://wam.n-somerset.gov.uk/MULTIW...&contentType=application/pdf&pageCount=1&sid=

it also shows how and where they will end up putting two 787 on this plan it will be stands 6, 7, & 8 parking for two but using three stands.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
