Do it yourself bag tagging is coming to an airport near you!

Do you think this is a good idea or do you think it is a step too far?

If this method of check-in is rolled out across airports throughout the UK and Europe it will enevatably lead to a reduction in airport staff normally used to do the job.

Airlines have already saved millions of pounds by insisting passengers check-in online but many passengers still require the use of bag drop facilities at airports. These require manned check-in desks to tag bags going into the hold of the aircraft.

Although many people wont be overly bothered about having to tag their own bag we must ask the question, where does this stop?

Throughout different industries company's are trying to find new ways of cutting costs but this will ultimately lead to fewer jobs. Supermarkets are asking people to scan their own products through the tills without even an offer of a discount. Nearly all government forms are now being done online instead of at the Post Office. etc etc.

Where will this all end, will anybody have a job in 10 years time?

How do you check the weight of the bag?
I'm not sure exactly, it must be automatic at the bag drop point where the tag is issued. It is American Airlines that is pioneering the new technology but airlines such as Ryanair and Easyjet will be watching it's development closely.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
