East Midlands Parkway station opens to passengers

East Midlands Parkway station opened to passengers this morning (26 January).

The £25m project is one of the most environmentally friendly railway stations ever built in the UK and will be served by more than 100 East Midlands Trains services per day, with trains to and from London every 15-20 minutes at peak times. The journey time to London will be around 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Network Rail owns the new station, which is managed by East Midlands Trains. Situated off the A453 next to Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station, 1 mile from the M1 motorway, it has been designed to serve as a park and ride station for Leicester, Derby and Nottingham, reducing car use into the major cities and taking traffic off the M1. The four platform station has step free access, a station building with ticket office and 850 car parking spaces.

The station has been built by contractor Birse for Network Rail using locally sourced and recycled materials. Designed by White Young Green, it features a ground-heating system. Funding for the project has come from Network Rail, the East Midlands Development Agency and East Midlands Trains.

Dyan Crowther, Network Rail route director said: "East Midlands Parkway signifies our commitment to improving the rail network and providing high quality accessible stations. It is a great facility which provides new choices for passengers and will tempt motorists from the nearby M1 to use a greener form of travel and aims to reduce congestion in nearby city centres."

Steve Brown, EMDA deputy chairman, said: "Good transport connectivity is important to create a successful economy and flourishing region, which is why EMDA has invested in East Midlands Parkway. The new station is an excellent example of what can be achieved through sustainable design and high environmental standards and will help support regional growth."

East Midlands Parkway provides direct rail links to Derby, Nottingham, Leicester, Lincoln, London, a number of smaller stations and continental Europe via London St Pancras International.

Peak time departures to London are at 0701, 0725, 0734, 0801, 0832 and 0839 with peak time departures from London St Pancras to East Midlands Parkway at 1615, 1625, 1700, 1715, 1730, 1745 and 1815. Throughout the rest of the day there are at least two departures every hour to and from London. Advance purchase tickets to London are available from eastmidlandstrains.co.uk starting at £8.

The opening of the new station is being communicated to the public through a marketing campaign coordinated by East Midlands Trains. This includes advertising on the internet, television, radio, poster sites, newspapers and also direct marketing. The Highways Agency is also placing messages on the electronic motorway signs to announce when the station is open.

New Airport Parkway link cleared for take off

East Midlands Airport is pleased to announce that a dedicated shuttle bus will operate between the new East Midlands Parkway Station and the Airport from 26 January 2009 – the station’s first day of opening.

The new service has been created and funded by a close working partnership between East Midlands Airport, East Midlands Trains, Nottingham City Council, East Midlands Development Agency (emda) and East Midlands Regional Assembly, making it easier for passengers to access the Airport by rail and bus.

Funding was also secured from Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire County Councils and Leicester City Council.

Operated under contract by Premiere, the ‘Railink’ service will run every 30 minutes, 7 days a week from 7am to 11.30pm, using low floor vehicles supplied by Nottingham City Council. The ‘Railink’ timetable coincides with train arrivals and departures, reaching East Midlands Airport in up to 15 minutes. The new dedicated shuttle service will complement the existing Skylink bus services which connect the Airport to Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Loughborough.

Penny Coates, Managing Director, East Midlands Airport, said, “We are delighted that the Airport will be served by a dedicated bus link from East Midlands Parkway Station, from the first day of opening. This new service will help deliver our promise of ease for the passenger and create better commuter links between the airport and the rest of the UK. We hope this will encourage more passengers to reach us by rail.”

East Midlands Regional Assembly member Nick Rushton, deputy leader of Leicestershire County Council, said, “I’m delighted that this new bus link and rail station are being launched, to help more people travel to the airport on public transport. The regional assembly helped to secure agreement on this service and get the funding together.”

David Horne, Commercial Director for East Midlands Trains, said, "The opening of the new station on 26 January really will represent a significant milestone for the East Midlands region. For a new station to be successful and to attract new passengers it is vital that good transport links are available. We are therefore extremely pleased to be working with partners in the region to deliver this vital new bus link between the station and the airport."

[textarea]East Midlands Airport train link bus axed

A bus service linking East Midlands Parkway train station and East Midlands Airport has been axed following a one-year trial, the Evening Post reports The Railink service was operated by a 16-seater minibus which ran seven days a week, every 30 minutes each way. It was funded by East Midlands Trains, the airport and local councils after the Parkway opened early last year. However, the bus service is to be replaced with taxis in conjunction with local firm Village Cars.

The new taxi service will cost £3 per journey and must be booked at least 12 hours in advance via eastmidlandstrains.co.uk/taxi or by calling Village Cars direct on 01332 706020 01332 706020 to guarantee the best price. The bus service used to cost £2 for a single and £3 return for adults and £1 single or £1.50 return for children.

A spokeswoman for East Midlands Trains said: ‘The bus ran every 30 minutes from each end and throughout a lot of the day it was running empty. The new improved service provides a fast, direct and easy connection to the airport. The new shared taxi service will offer more flexible operating times, which will mean less waiting for passengers and a greener option to the previous Railink service, with fewer wasted bus journeys.'

[textarea]East Midlands Airport passengers warned of weekend traffic

Passengers using East Midlands Airport this weekend (June 11 - 13) are being urged to allow plenty of extra time, as thousands of people travel to neighbouring Donington Park for the Download Music Festival. Major roads and motorways near the airport are likely to be busy from tomorrow (June 9) when campsites for the event open, until Monday (June 14) when they close.

In order to aid traffic flow from the event, road restrictions will be in place on Sunday evening (22.30 - 02.00) and Monday (8.00 - 14.00). During these periods a one-way traffic system will be in place from Donington Park (Paddock Entrance) along Melbourne Lane to the A453 and southbound to Moor Lane (A42) junction; in addition there will be no right turn out of the main airport exit. I am flying from East Midlands on Saturday but just found out that the download festival is on at Donnington and therefore there will be ALOT more traffic. The advisory is to allow more time to travel but as I have never been in this situation and do not know what the traffic could be like I'm wondering how much extra time to allow? 30 mins? an hour? 2 hours?!!!
Any advice would be great. We are parking onsite so any advice on the best way to go (coming from Warwickshire) and what kind of traffic issues there usually are.
Thanks!

What time is your flight? If it's in the middle of the day then you might miss it going in/out. I've not got much experience either but V Festival was at Weston Park recently and radio traffic bulletins were reporting the M54 as stationary for over 3 miles and without wishing to alarm you this is from a news article about last year 'During last year's event roads became gridlocked, and some people walked along the hard shoulder of the M1 with luggage to reach East Midlands Airport.' :shok:

Is it too late to get a cheap room onsite for Friday night?

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
