Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone can answer a question about the Runways at MAN.

The last time I was there, and the only time I've been there while the A380 was in service, it used Runway 2 for the arrival and Runway 1 for departure as they were on the 05's that day. It was the only arrival at that time on Runway 2 with all others on Runway 1. I was just wondering if the A380 has a separate arrival/departure procedure on Runway 2 and if so is it still in place now?

I have also noticed that runway 2 closes at 10.00 and reopens at 19.00. How long have these times been in operation from the old 12.00 closure time?

Thanks for any info.

Hi Smoke_on

As far as I am aware there are no separate procedures for the A380 at Manchester airport. There may have been some local restrictions on the day, this could include taxiway restrictions and so forth.

As for the runway 2 closure times see the NOTAM thread,

Re: Runway Use

Thanks for the info Aviador.

Just another question...... Where is people's best spot for viewing the action and where would you recommend?

Thanks again for any info.

I just use the official viewing area. There is a charge but it has food, drink and toilet facilities plus you have a chance to view Concorde and other aircraft there.

There's a number of places around the perimeter of the airport where you can view the aircraft but if you're driving you're best to stick with the official site.

Re: Runway Use

The A380 used to used 'R2' as the airport was not sure if the aircraft interfered with the ILS during the taxi past the AVP until line up on Runway 23R.
This has now been proven it doesnt interfere, so the A380 uses the same active runway as all other aircraft.

Runway 2 is using reduced opening times as the MAN air traffic controllers are being trained on new electronic information strips, in preperation for when the new tower opens.
Once the tower is 'fully staffed' again, the normal opening hours will be resumed.

Re: Runway Use

When ever I have been there and the 05s have be in use I have also seen the A380 landing on 'R2' and going from 'R1'.

Justlooking at the A380 ground movement chart http://www.ead.eurocontrol.int/eadbasic ... -06-02.pdf, it could be that if it were to land on 5L it cannot exit the runway until the very end on Twy JA, so letting her land on 5R could speed traffic up?!

Re: Runway Use

Thanks for the information.

Very interesting about the ILS issue and the A380. Do you know what sort of issue the airport thought it may cause.

When I was at the airport the other day the A380 used a follow me vehicle. Does it use one every time it's at the airport?

Re: Runway Use

I think I've seen the 380 use the Follow Me before.
I'd reckon it could be used just to make sure she doesnt venture off onto any taxiways not wide enough for her.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.

Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
