I just discovered that Humberside Airport only opened in 1974 ( closed after the war in 1945 ) . Quite surprised it hadn't been operating for a longer period.

Indeed, almost coincided with the formation of much maligned Humberside County Council. Prior to Kirmington being used for commercial aviation purposes, there was an airport in Brough which Autair ran a number of successful routes from. The building of Cappa Pass smelting works in 1969 meant that Brough lost its licence to provide CAT. The services moved to RAF Leconfield from which they continues up until I think 1974 when it was consolidated at Humberside and the rest is history. Believe Amsterdam will have been served continuously from Humberside for 50 years either next year or in 2025.

The irony is that the chimney at Cappa Pass smelting works was demolished a few years ago. It could have been the airport for East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. (and a lot nearer for me to get to)

Autair operated a Jersey service from LBA for a short period in 1969? because of restrictions at RAF Leconfield.

Demolished in 1991 I think. It was allegedly the cause of numerous childhood cancers in the local area too sadly.

Basically the building of it on the approach meant that it caused an obstacle not suitable for CAT. But it wasn’t just that, the changing of hands from Blackburns to Hawker Siddeley around that time meant a change in focus and HS were apparently less than enamoured by CAT and GA using their airfield at what was a military aircraft factory. By that time the airfield was only really used by the company communications aircraft and a couple of other things as the main flight test airfield was at Holme on Spalding Moor until 1983.

I remember when the chimney came down there was lots of noise about the possibility of extending the runway at Brough, in fact it was seriously considered. By time there were a couple of J31s based at the airfield plus the PC9s in various numbers. In 1992 the jetstreams were considered uneconomical, the airfield expensive to maintain and the PC9 contract had gone as the RAF purchased the Tucano. So the airfield was downgraded and I think the only regular flying activity after that was a Police flying club C150 and an occasional flight by the then Blackburn B2. The airshow every two years saw the runway reopen and that handles various aircraft but then from 1999 even the runway was off limits! It did reopen briefly in 2008 for the hawks to fly out to Warton for flight testing and handover to customers. The pilot was positioned in on a small multi engine aircraft. There was a visit by the Martin Baker king air a couple of times too. Carol Vorderman may have actually been one of the last people to land there! It’s now the site of a discount supoermarket and a new link road follows the path of the old runway.

RAF Leconfield was used begrudgingly after Brough was closed to CAT. The MOD didn’t like the use of it for commercial air traffic due to its proximity to the Cowden range. Shame as that too was on a railway line, with a ready made long runway. But in the end it was handed over to the army and by that point Humberside airport had opened - the Humber bridge opening shortly after meaning the two sides of the river were properly connected, unfortunately it’s still a disjointed partnership.

Brough should have been the airport for the region, but it never happened and it now never will.

I've only used HUY once, when I flew with Air UK from Tees side. Just a short hop, but saved a.long drive. I think I was the only one who got on at MME, and I think HUY was pretty deserted when I got off there. It was quite late in the evening I recall. I think the F27 went inwards to NWI.

Must have been the old Sunday rotation. I’m terms of busyness, during the period early 90’s to mid 00’s HUY was often one of the fastest growing airports in the country. Unfortunately the opening of DSA and the consolidation in the IT market put a stop to that. Such a shame, confident that HUY would be outperforming BOH now had DSA not opened.

It was around that time, but dont remember the day of the week. It was certainly pre DSA. I do distinctly remember the pilot saying at MME he wanted to get underway because of fog rolling in..

Hi guys.Hope you’re well.
I’ve come on here to talk about expansion from airports that need expanding. For example I’ve done Leeds and they like my positive thoughts.

This is my bet for
Loganair route to Inverness as a one weekly flight
Eastern airways to Europe to offer two destinations:prague and Rhodes

Eastern A/W are not interested in offering holidays to Europe. It is not their mode of operation and they do not have the aircraft to operate such flights.

Positive thoughts not appropriate on this sub 😉

There is unlikely to be any new routes at Humberside, at least for the foreseeable future.

Anyone seen the class D Humberside is getting tomorrow by the way? It is only temporary to allow for an important movement, but it’s exactly what MAG proposed some 15 years or so ago!

Latest FY results 2023 show that Humberside is back in profit - that’s with property revaluation. But actually it made an operating loss of £3000.00 on its core business.

Yes that is the right amount of zeros. It lost the equivalent of a third hand Vauxhall Corsa…! That’s based on 136,000 passengers. So crudely that means the airport lost £0.04 for every departing passenger.

Tell me again why the mayor next door wants to plunge up to £138m into a venture that previously lost up to £15.00 per departing passenger.

Wow that is one way of looking at it!

Given that there is never anything to report on here short of Spottys regular passenger updates (which are much appreciated), there is a tiny bit of non-news news. The airport appear to have launched a new website;

Not amazing on mobile devices it seems, but it looks fairly decent. It’s been pointed out elsewhere that they’re making a big deal about car parking just been a couple of minutes walk from the terminal. Doing what they can in the face of potential competition?

As posted in the LBA routes and rumours thread, looks like HUY might be on Corendons radar. This is possibly due to the tie in with Hull City, but also because the Turkish and possibly Greek tourist boards are keen to see more U.K. departure points added for increase in inbound tourism.

Probably come to nothing as usual, but thought it worth a mention on here since sadly one or two extra 737 flights per week in summer would be a significant step forward for an airport like HUY when compared to LBA or EMA!

What a fantastic day at World Travel Market (WTM) London this week! ✈️
It was a pleasure representing Humberside Airport and thank you to the teams at Corendon Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, AJet, Turkish Airlines, Croatia Airlines, SunExpress, TAP Air Portugal, LOT Polish Airlines
and Vueling Airlines for your time and interest — your enthusiasm was truly appreciated!

A special shout-out to Wayne Szczambura from Newmarket Holidays — always lovely to catch up and share ideas.

World Travel Market (WTM) London continues to be a brilliant platform for collaboration and connection. Here's to building even stronger partnerships and bringing more choice to our region!

A rare but encouraging show of enthusiasm apparently posted by one of the people at HUY tasked with business development.

As is usually the case, nothing will probably come from it.. However it’s good to see regardless.

I used to visit the WTO when I was younger working in the travel trade. I used to always enjoy it.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
