Well Monarch Airlines have just announced a new base at East Midlands Airport. They will be starting flights from Mid summer. I guess taking up the slack after bmi baby is closed in September.

Monarch to launch new regional base

Monarch has announced a further expansion of its operations across the Midlands with the launch of a new base at East Midlands Airport and also additional flights from Birmingham.

The airline will launch new flights to key leisure destinations across the Mediterranean, including to Malaga, Alicante, Palma and Faro in Portugal from the Midlands in late summer.

In addition, it will expand its operations from Birmingham by adding more flights to Malaga, Alicante, Faro Rome and Palma plus a new route to Barcelona.

Monarch managing director Kevin George said: "In light of recent industry changes, opportunities have opened up in the market. It has become clear that the Midlands will be underserved as a region in the future, and that there is a lack of quality carriers to serve customers travelling from the area.

"As an airline with over 40 years heritage and a stronghold in the Midlands already, the expansion of our existing services from Birmingham and the launch of operations from East Midlands makes perfect sense for Monarch, and accelerates the strategy we announced last year to focus on the development of our scheduled operations into key leisure destinations across the Mediterranean, the Canaries and North Africa."

Fantasic news, i very much doubt EZY will be coming now. However where on earth are Monarch getting the a/c from to operate there schedule? No orders shedding of the A300 & 757's over the next few years. Hello holes in schedules with no suitable a/c to fill them.

I suspect we could see reductions in the frequency of certain routes from; Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham etc.. all will be done "under-cover"...

Airline celebrates one year at airport with bumper stats

Written byROB SMYTH

AN airline has celebrated the first anniversary of its link up with East Midlands Airpot by announcing a jump in passenger numbers.

Monarch revealed that in just 12 months the number of passengers surpassed its forecasted passenger figures by 15 per cent.

The last 12 months has seen the airline carry 358,477 passengers to destinations, with Faro being the favourite.

Operations began in August 2012, with flights to Malaga, Faro and Palma.

Other destinations were added later in the year, including Ibiza and, over the winter, Tenerife and Lanzarote.

Kevin George, Monarch’s managing director, said: “Beating our predicted passenger numbers for East Midlands Airport in the first year is a very positive start for our fifth base.

“In addition, we have brought new jobs to the region and opened a brand new crew room, which firmly cements our presence at the airport and further strengthens our popularity.”

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
