Info Request Airband Scanner (Which one's best....?)

Hello have £100 and would like tj know what recommendations anyone has on a amateur scanner that I can listen to aircraft, will I be able to listen fro home or will I need to be in a certain range? Had one when I was a kid bit that was back in the analogue days and pre www!!! So thought I'd seek advice before spending my cash !?

I would probably recommend getting a good reconditioned radio which will be much cheaper than a brand new one but it will work just as well.

I don't have one at the moment but I used to have the Yupiteru 125 and the Yupiteru 225. Both were exceptionally good and seem to last just about forever. I had mine for over a decade. So far as I know the brand is still going and they are still making airband radios.

I'm not up to date with the latest versions or other brands so I can only speak for the Yupiteru.

I am wanting to buy a "base Station" scanner and am looking at the Uniden Bearcat UBC355CLT. Has any one got one, used one?

I have a Yupiteru MVT-7100 which I purchased off eBay in 2004. My second example (the first I picked up via the local classifieds in the 90's).

I think 17 years on....this may still be the best option to find a decent airband scanner?

Now I've heard from friends of a company called Baofeng that make some nice radios with latest tech, connect to PC to configure etc. Sadly they don't produce anything covering the airband range which is such a shame. I was really hoping to link to one as they are reasonably priced too!

Before the popularity of mobile phones and when the internet was in its infancy, we relied on enthusiast shops for our aviation needs. We had a one such shop at BHX. From there I came to know of javiation which were scanner specialists based in Bradford. They have retained part of their website with references to some of the popular models from 20 years ago. http://www.javiation.co.uk/ It appears the likes of flightradar and the various resources available on our mobile phones has turned what was a niche market to almost zero nowadays.

My suggestion is to have a look at the javiation link and identify a decent scanner. You can't go wrong with Yupiteru, AOR, Uniden, Realistic - there could be more. Next step is to start searching on eBay, Gumtree, Shpock etc for a good example.

Very interesting! I never got to visit the store but from their catalogue they looked to be very well stocked for airband scanners and accessories. I did order an aerial from them.

One scanner you should add to your list is the Yupiteru VT-225. A brief search on eBay completed listings and I can see this is selling for about the ~£60 mark. Remember a scanners performance can be severely limited with a poor aerial (unless you're very close to the airport). I suggest something like this Airband aerial will be a nice combination with the Yupiteru or similar.

Sorry, I've used eBay above just to guage prices and provides examples to link to. It may not be your first choice.

I am familiar in obtaining frequencies. I am thinking of a budget of around £200 as I know you can spend quite a bit more for professional scanners. Any help would be appreciated

As for which radio scanner is best for under £200, a similar question was asked just a little way back on this thread if you are able to navigate through. I don't know of the recommended device is any good for military? #AirBandRadio
