CAA Provisional Statistics Update

I would have done if the figures had been entered properly.
unfortunately March's figures have been posted to say that the total passenger movements through the airport terminal have been 114 which is a 99.8% fall in comparison to last month.
Clearly at least 2 digits have been lost from the total.

This sort of thing has happened in the past with other airports. It's usually rectified in the end but you have to wonder who checks the figures at the CAA end and why they are published so obviously wildly incorrectly.

I'm suspecting that they are not checked. I could easily write a piece of code that receives Emails from all the airports with their PAX figures and creates both reports for all the national airports, then uploads it to a web server.

If a comma is in the wrong place or an extra space in the email it could easily cause this to happen if the code is not very resilient.

I think it goes deeper than that at times. I've been checking CAA stats via their website for nigh on 20 years and I can give a number of examples where it's clearly not just an incorrectly placed comma or extra space.

For example last year Enfidha was missed (shown as nil) in the winter months for BRS flights (before the terrorist action stopped all flights) and was never put back into the annual figures. The year before both Enfidha and Verona were shown as nil for two or three months when they operated and again this was never put right in the final stats.
BRS-GCI has seen 24,000-28,000 per annum for the past ten years yet in 2012 several months were shown as nil when flights operated giving an annual total under 7,000 which is still shown in the CAA archives for that year.

That's why I'm never completely confident that every CAA stat is correct. I realise that so far as airport stats are concerned they rely on the information supplied by the airports.

However, back to the monthly airport terminal totals which they've got wrong with DSA at the moment; they do get that right in the end in my experience.

Yokel you are correct of course;
Today they have finally updated the march PAX figure at DSA and it is good news with the second best March since the Airport opened.

Very frustrating. The last data published for any UK airport was in march. I'm assuming that the system is stuck or something. This has never happened before.

Yes it's certainly very frustrating. I understand the CAA are changing the way the figures are published. It has been discussed elsewhere in the forum, I think it's the aviation industry forum.

I published the below post today in the Aviation Industry forum but because not everyone reads this forum I've copied it to selected airport forums.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Still no April stats releases so it's no use expecting May's yet. The CAA has now put this message on its website.

Estimated release dates

With the launch of AvStats, the system that processes airport and airline data, there is a delay to the release of published reports. We will update this page as soon as further information is available.

No indication when April's stats will be out, let alone May's. Yet another example of an organisation introducing a new IT system that clearly was not tested properly.

Addendum

There is considerable discussion about this on another website.

One suggestion is that the airports now provide figures to a third party that verifies them before they are published by the CAA. This is due to a new EU edict (yes, I know but I can't verify that this is true) and leads to airports being fined if the figures are not produced in a certain way.

Another suggestion is that figures are fed to an automated system that verifies them against a CAA-held data base. It is alleged that the CAA systems are incompatible with accepting the figures from the automated reader and, anyway, because so many of the criteria held in the CAA data base are either wrong or incomplete airports are continually being told their figures cannot be correct although they may well be.

It appears matters were much more efficient when people sat down with calculators, pens and pieces of paper.

thanks for the update LocalYokel. It is frustrating.

I understand from the local press that DSA has had a couple of booming months with over 200,000 PAX. However there is no exact figure and I can't find it to add to my table.
We will just have to be patient I suppose.

Certainly still no sign yet of the stats being published.

Good news indeed about DSA's passenger figures. Up over 20% on the rolling 12-month measurement the last time the CAA published which were the March figures. With April and May booming the 1 mppa level cannot be too far away. It will be good to get back above 1 mppa again.

Some load factors, ALC and AGP not included due to multiple operators..

Paris 5,692 (44%).
Amsterdam 4,948 (70%).
Berlin 1,894 (47%).
Faro 1,365 (64%).
Jersey 3,200 (45%).
Newquay 1,076 (35%).

Based on the best case assumption of high LF on the ALC and AGP flights, the load factor across all Flybe routes at DSA would be 56% in April. Hopefully these will change over the coming months.

Flybe's load factor FY15/16 was 72.6% (3% down on 14/15), so the load factors will need to increase significantly to bring them in line with the airlines standards.

Cardiff's load factors weren't great to begin - with some exceptions - with but they are improving all the time as the airline becomes better known in the area. As pug points out an improvement will be needed to reach the airline's average although Flybe seems to manage with far lower average load factors than the likes of easyJet and Ryanair.

Just noticed that the May provisional PAX data has been published and it is another record. Best may ever!

Another interesting figure is that the rolling passenger figure for the last 12 months now stand at 986,886. Close to 1 million ...

Excellent.Good to see that the recovery is continuing to pick up momentum.

The CAA is showing 1,204,749 passengers in the 12 months to the end of October, which is a huge increase of 44.2% on a year ago.

Today the November PAX figures have been loaded at the CAA

Best November ever.

Still no December figure yet !

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
LBA: Albastar B737-800 EC-MUB positioning in tommorow afternoon from Gatwick 15:45 to operate a charter to Lourdes/Tarbes on Friday afternoon 14:00 AP7721 STC
I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,
