At Newcastle they have a pretty good network and no base so they don't really need to base.

As Severn pointed out recently in the BRS Ryanair thread, 53 of the 125 weekly rotations there in summer are operated by aircraft from other bases with the other 72 operated by BRS-based aircraft. That's an average of 7.5 rotations each day operated by 'visiting' Ryanair aircraft which confirms that with Ryanair a base is not necessarily a prerequisite for a substantial route network.

Incidentally, overnight EXT (also close to BRS) has a larger FR operation than CWL (admittedly only 1 additional pw). Seeing off BE ?

I was based in Malta last year - it is absolutely booming - online gambling, financial services, young population, no unemployment (they have to recruit overseas) and building everywhere.Think it is (or was) one of only EU countries with a budget surplus ! looks to get loads of EU cash.

P&O have Oceana based there Apr-Oct sailing out of Valletta (although I know they won’t package FR).

It's beautiful in Valletta very modern, cosmopolitan and thriving. Grand Harbour is stunning and they have am amazing regatta/festival there each year in June iirc.

I'd be surprised if Ryanair didn't add to its CWL route network at some point. In an interview regarding the EXT Ryanair announcement an airline spokesman pointed out that Ryanair has 80 bases around Europe and it would be a simple matter to link EXT with more routes in that way. The same obviously applies with CWL.

I would not like to be specific or give a precise timescale because I obviously don't know but, like a number of F4A members, I've been anticipating some growth at CWL (I must admit I didn't expect EXT), and although the new route is a relatively modest addition it's an encouragement that more could be on the way, if not immediately.

What might be interesting as well is when Jet2 do turn up in the area and the likely candidate would be Bristol is if that extra competition will push them to offer more from the likes of Cardiff and Exeter and Newquay.

That's a point I was going to mention in the BRS thread. My view and I've read others share it, although we could be completely wrong, is that currently CWL might be favourite for Jet2 if the airline decided to make a move south-westwards in say the next year. It doesn't seem imminent though but perhaps in a couple of years - who knows?

My reasoning is that Jet2 is more of a competitor with TUI and TCX and BRS is well provided for at the moment in volume and frequency with the types of route that Jet2 is increasingly developing at its current airports. However, if CWL continues to grow with the likes of TUI (that additional aircraft next summer) and Ryanair adds more mainly holiday routes that advantage possibly enjoyed by CWL at the moment might begin to lessen.

BRS has capacity problems with based aircraft but has been building new aircraft stands in recent years with three more in the programme at that part of the eastern end of the airport (old terminal) that is due for demolition. So a stay of Jet2 execution for a couple of years might benefit them.

Of course, if Jet2 decided to split its south-west Britain presence - I don't know that it would and I've been told more than once that new bases now ideally consist of at least four aircraft - then all or some of CWL, BRS, EXT and NQY might be in the frame for a little bit of the whole. Bases are expensive things to maintain especially if they can't be used for 12 months a year, and setting up small bases in an area of the UK that is not a Greater Manchester, West Midlands or West Yorkshire in population terms might not be seen as an attractive proposition.

It's all good fun speculating. We don't have the responsibility of ensuring the company is run efficiently and profitably.

Addendum

I forgot to mention BOH which has been mentioned in connection with Jet2 and has historic links with the airline's predecessors. They might be in a future frame as well.
