Re: Passenger Figures

Gatwick rocked by 15% drop in seat capacity

Gatwick airport has lost nearly half a million seats in the last year as airlines cut frequencies, drop routes and move operations to Heathrow.

The airport’s scheduled and no-frills capacity fell by 475,000 seats to 2.65 million in the 12 months to March this year, a drop of 15%.

It was the biggest fall in seat volume of any UK airport, though Stansted, Luton, Manchester and Glasgow had similar percentage falls.

In contrast, Heathrow saw a tiny decrease in the number of seats to 7.7 million despite carriers worldwide cutting capacity, according to figures from aviation data specialist OAG.

Gatwick’s charter capacity suffered last year from the collapse of XL. Scheduled seats also took a knock from the failure of Zoom.

A spokesman for Gatwick said the figures demonstrated the impact of the EU-US open skies agreement, which allowed more carriers access to Heathrow when it came into force at the end of March last year. Since then,

Continental Airlines and American Airlines have moved from Gatwick to Heathrow. BA has also moved its Atlanta route to Heathrow.

However, Gatwick expects this summer’s scheduled capacity to be similar to last year’s. New carriers are moving in, with Aer Lingus setting up a base at Gatwick this year, and Iceland Express moving from Stansted to Gatwick in May.

CAA passenger stats for October

A total of 2,849,944 passengers passed through Gatwick Airport during October up 0.8% on the same month last year.

Rolling passenger totals stand at 31,510,955 down -2.3% on the previous 12 months

CAA Passenger Stats for April 2011

A total of 2,758,977 passengers used London Gatwick airport during April this year, up 34.3% compared with April last year. As with all airports in the UK this increase will be because of last years volcanic ash eruption.

Rolling year passengers for London Gatwick stand at 32,344,249, up 1.5% year on year.

Gatwick passengers up 5.2%

Gatwick Airport has reported June passenger numbers up by 5.2%. The growth in passenger numbers was slightly lower than in the previous two months - April and May - as in those months growth was inflated because of the ash cloud disruption from last year's volcanic eruption in Iceland.

Passengers on European scheduled flights were up 13.9%, North Atlantic passengers up 3.8%, domestic passengers up 1.3% and passengers on routes to and from Ireland up 1.3%. However, European charter passengers were down 3.1% and 'other long haul' passengers down 12.6%. Cargo freight processed was down 20.6%.

A spokesman for the airport said: ‘The increase in passengers is driven by growth in short-haul markets. Norwegian, airberlin, easyJet, British Airways and Ryanair are among a number of airlines operating a greater volume of flights compared to last year.’

Load factors - a measure of how full flights are - have also risen in both the international and domestic markets. On average, load factors rose from 81% last year to 82.7% this year. In the year to the end of June the airport had 31.7m passengers, up 3% on the previous 12 months.

Pre-tax profits in the six months to 30 September were £127.3m, up from £107.2m in the same period last year.

The number of passengers using Gatwick rose 4.4% to 20.8 million.

The figures were boosted by continued strong growth from budget European airline Easyjet, although Gatwick has also seen the start of several new international services.

Record November for Gatwick as Asia connections soar

  • Record November as 2.9million passengers travelled through Gatwick
  • Long-haul routes +12.1% driving a +25.6% cargo increase
  • Passenger demand for the airport’s Asia routes continues Hong Kong +75% and Tianjin +46.1%
London Gatwick has achieved its busiest-ever November as 2.9 million passengers travelled through the airport last month, bringing Gatwick to 45.5 million annual passengers.

Long-haul routes continue their significant growth at Gatwick, growing +12.1% in November, driving a +25.6% cargo increase from the increased belly hold capacity in the aircraft serving these connections.

The airport’s Asia connections proved particularly popular in November with passengers to Hong Kong +75% and Tianjin +46.1%.

Gatwick’s regional connectivity also continues to perform strongly with passengers to the Isle of Man, Glasgow and Guernsey +12.9%, +11% and +6.8% respectively.

Meanwhile, St Lucia +85.8%, Mauritius +55% and Liberia, Costa Rica +47% were the winter sun destinations experiencing the fastest passenger growth in the month.

November also marked the first anniversary of the Gatwick Foundation Fund which annually distributes £300,000 to deserving projects across Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

To date, 80 organisations and more than 46,000 people have benefited from the grants and reported improvements in the services they provide, which cover four main areas: Employment, training and skills; Families; Widening horizons and Elderly people.

Gatwick Airport CEO Stewart Wingate said:

“Passenger demand for the global connectivity provided by Gatwick continues to rocket – long-haul routes +12.1% in November while business passengers are at record levels.

“This year five new long-haul connections have started, Singapore, Seattle, Denver, Kigali and Taipei, further strengthening Gatwick’s global connectivity. Connectivity which is set to further increase 2018 with new connections to Austin, Chicago and Buenos Aires beginning in just the first quarter alone.

“While demand for the slots previously operated by Monarch outstripped availability six times over, International Airlines Group were ultimately successful in acquiring them and we’re looking forward to the new destination choices they will enable for our passengers in 2018.

“Meanwhile, closer to home in November, we were delighted as an airport to celebrate the first anniversary of the Gatwick Foundation Fund which distributes funds to deserving charity projects in Gatwick’s locality.

“For both our local region and the whole country Gatwick is set to play an increased global role for as we grow. We’re ready and prepared to build our financeable and deliverable second runway scheme so that Britain can reap the benefits of greater global connectivity faster.”

Gatwick’s busiest ever December closes record-breaking year as 45.6m passengers travel through in 2017
12/01/2018

  • Gatwick welcomed 3.2m passengers in final month of 2017
  • Record numbers a result of soaring long-haul growth, +16% year-on-year, also driving +33.6% cargo growth
  • 7.3m passengers travelled long-haul in 2017 as Gatwick’s long-haul network grew to 63 connections
London Gatwick ended 2017 with its busiest December on record, as 3.2 million passengers travelled through the airport during the festive month, an increase of 1.5% year-on-year. 45.6 million passengers used the airport in 2017, +5.2% on 2016.

After a year of continued booming growth in Gatwick’s long-haul connections, with new routes including Singapore, Rwanda, Seattle and Denver, December saw a 16% year-on-year rise in passengers travelling long-haul.

The airport’s long-haul network grew to 63 connections in 2017, and Gatwick welcomed 7.3 million long-haul passengers across the year – an increase of almost one million compared with 2016.

Oakland, San Francisco proved to be the long-haul destination with the biggest growth at Gatwick in December, as the number of passengers travelling there increased by 97% on the previous year.

The airport’s Asia routes also continued their significant growth with Hong Kong +62% and Tianjin +41.7% in December. A new China Airlines service to Taipei joined Gatwick’s burgeoning Asia route network at the start of the month.

Meanwhile, Gatwick’s growing global connectivity continues to drive a surge in the volume of cargo handled by the airport – tonnage was up 33.6% in December.

Gatwick Airport, Chief Executive Officer, Stewart Wingate said:

“2017 was a great year for Gatwick in which we delivered record passenger growth and an array of new long-haul routes, bringing our annual passenger total to 45.6 million and extending our long-haul network to 63 connections.

“Gatwick’s soaring long-haul and cargo growth in December is an impressive conclusion to 2017 and we’ll be strengthening the airport’s global connectivity even further this year, with new services to Buenos Aires, Austin and Chicago already confirmed to begin in the first quarter alone.

“This year, we’re also looking forward to British Airways’ biggest summer schedule at Gatwick for almost ten years, which will see 15% more weekly BA flights than last summer.

“We have ambitious plans to build on the success achieved in 2017 and reach 50 million passengers per year and beyond, setting new standards for Gatwick and playing an increased global role for Britain. This will be done while continuing to deliver the best passenger experience, which is at the heart of everything we do at Gatwick.”

Gatwick kicks off 2018 with record-breaking January

  • 2.8m passengers travelled through Gatwick in its busiest-ever January
  • US routes recorded the highest rate of growth, with New York +51.1% and Boston +31.4%
  • The airport’s thriving long-haul network drove +29.6% cargo growth
London Gatwick last month experienced the busiest January in its history, with 2.8 million passengers travelling through – an increase of 1.4% year-on-year, marking the airport’s 59th consecutive month of growth.

As thousands of Brits travelled Stateside for a January escape, US routes saw the biggest percentage increase in passenger numbers. Fort Lauderdale was the North American destination with the highest passenger growth rate, up 92.6% on January 2017.

New York and Boston also saw significant year-on-year growth – up 51.1% and 31.4% respectively – while the US West Coast proved popular too, with Oakland, San Francisco +76.6% and Los Angeles +38.6%.

It wasn’t just Gatwick’s thriving American routes that pushed its long-haul growth figure to 16.8% in January; the airport’s Asia routes soared too, with Hong Kong +42.4% year-on-year.

Elsewhere, Gatwick’s growing global connectivity is having a positive effect on the volume of cargo handled by the airport. Tonnage rose by 29.6% in January as a direct result of Gatwick’s booming long-haul network, which currently comprises over 60 worldwide connections, with a new route to Buenos Aires launching next week.

Closer to home, Gatwick’s regional connectivity also continued to perform well last month, with Newquay +21.3%, Guernsey +13% and Glasgow +9% – the three domestic routes with the highest percentage growth.

Gatwick Airport, Chief Executive Officer, Stewart Wingate said:

“We’ve started 2018 as we mean to go on at Gatwick, with record January passenger numbers and considerable year-on-year growth across our long-haul route network.

“January’s traffic shows that US destinations are increasingly popular and next month we’ll be providing even more options for passengers travelling Stateside with the launch of new routes to Austin and Chicago. These new connections will be joined this summer by British Airways’ biggest summer schedule at the airport in almost ten years – a 15% increase in weekly flights compared to last year.

“As we approach five consecutive years of growth, Gatwick continues to play an increased role for Britain on the global stage and we stand ready to build our financeable and deliverable second runway scheme for the country.”

Growth in US routes drives Gatwick’s busiest-ever May
  • Gatwick welcomed 4.1 million passengers in May, +0.3% year-on-year
  • The airport’s long-haul route network, +24.1%, continues to thrive
  • Gatwick’s increasing global connectivity is fuelling strong cargo growth, +14.8% in May
Last month saw London Gatwick experience the busiest May in its history, as 4.1 million passengers travelled through the airport.

In the same month that Qatar Airways launched a new service from Gatwick to Doha, the airport’s 65 other long-haul routes continued to soar, +24.1% on May 2017. Services to Asia performed strongly, with Hong Kong particularly popular, +39% on last year.

Gatwick’s ongoing global success story is also having a significant impact on its cargo tonnage. The volume of cargo handled by the airport in May grew by 14.8% year-on-year.

Gatwick’s connections to the United States, +42.8% for the month, drove the airport’s busiest-ever May. The USA’s most iconic cities were among the most popular long-haul destinations during the month, with East Coast favourites Boston and New York +73.1% and +45.4% respectively, and Los Angeles +49.6%.

Bucharest, Pula and Vienna, +50.5%, +38.8% and +27.9% respectively, were among the most popular European destinations.

Elsewhere, domestic routes to Newquay and the Isle of Man were up 18.6% and 8.7% respectively, while Guernsey saw a 5.8% rise on May last year.

May’s growth was achieved against a backdrop of air traffic control action and weather disruption throughout Europe, which resulted in a reduction in air traffic movements for the month, compared to May 2017.

Gatwick Airport, Chief Executive Officer, Stewart Wingate said:

“May was another successful month for Gatwick’s long-haul route network, with substantial growth in our existing routes, as well as the welcome addition of new Qatar Airways flights to Doha. This service makes it even easier for our passengers to reach onward destinations in Asia and Australia, and also provides increased cargo capacity – further demonstrating the vital role that Gatwick continues to play for Britain.

“As passenger numbers continue to rise, we remain committed to improving the passenger experience at every touch point, and our busiest-ever May coincided with the launch of the UK’s first trial of self-boarding gates, using biometric technology to make the boarding process for passengers even quicker.

“Continuing to innovate is hugely important for us, and we’re committed to exploring the best way Gatwick can continue to grow sustainably through maximising the use of our existing facilities, supporting the local and national economy whilst opening up new destinations for our passengers and businesses and offering the country the prospect of a financeable and deliverable new runway scheme.”

Stateside flights lift Gatwick passenger numbers in busiest-ever September

british-airways-on-airfield.jpg
  • Passenger numbers reach 4.5 million, a +0.3% increase on September last year
  • Long-haul flights up +18.1% – driving a cargo surge of +17.4%
  • As passenger numbers continue to rise, Gatwick is also recognised by the Carbon Trust for its significant carbon footprint reduction last year
London Gatwick has recorded the busiest September in its history, with 4.5 million passengers travelling through in what was also a successful month for the airport’s ongoing sustainability programme.
As the Carbon Trust named Gatwick the UK airport with the biggest combined reduction of operational carbon, water and non-recycled waste last year, total passenger numbers grew by 14,800 – a +0.3% increase – compared with September 2017.
North Atlantic routes saw high growth rates, +20.5% overall – with Denver, Boston and Fort Lauderdale proving particularly popular, up +215.4%, +71.3% and +47.9% respectively.

Gatwick’s long-haul network continues to go from strength to strength, growing by +18.1% in September. This is having a direct impact on the airport’s cargo growth, with tonnage +17.4% year-on-year.

Other long-haul routes with noticeably strong growth in September included Kigali, Rwanda – which grew by +51.5%, around a year and a half after its initial launch by RwandAir – and Hong Kong, with passenger numbers up +4.2%.

In terms of short-haul routes, Vienna continues to surge, up +130.1% in September, thanks to a new Level service launched earlier this year. Edinburgh was the domestic route with the highest growth rate, rising by +5.9% year-on-year.

Gatwick also recently celebrated a UK aviation milestone with Virgin Atlantic, welcoming the world’s first commercial flight to use next generation fuel made from recycled waste carbon gases.

Stewart Wingate, CEO, London Gatwick said:

“Sustainable growth remains a top priority at Gatwick. It’s therefore encouraging to achieve another month of healthy growth in passenger numbers, while at the same time being recognised for our commitment to reducing carbon, water and non-recycled waste on-site.

“Ensuring Gatwick has the capacity to grow sustainably in the decades to come is the key to a prosperous future for the South East and the UK as a whole.

“With our long-haul network thriving, we’re in a strong position to support a post-Brexit Britain, when long-haul connections to countries like China will be more important than ever before.”
