Ebola Case in U.S. Gives Airline Investors the Jitters

With airline industry stocks around the world starting to get the jitters, should we be concerned about the rising number of ebola cases? New cases in the west are starting to pop up as the virus takes hold. Initially it was believed the virus wasn't airborne but recent reports coming from Spain suggest the virus can spread much easier than first thought.

During the SARS outbreak the then Labour government stockpiled sufficient anti-viral drugs to ensure the entire UK population could receive it if required. Should the UK government and other western governments be taking similar action with the ebola virus?

Re: Ebola Crisis Sends Shockwaves Through The Aviation Indus

I try to avoid the news these days but are there any drugs to treat this? I thought the stuff they used in the US was all but gone and the other two possible treatments are yet to be certified as safe for humans?

It's going to be interesting to hear the details of the poor nurse in Madrid, there are some suggestions that the protective clothing the workers were wearing may not have been up to the required biological security level and/or that correct procedures may not have been followed, but if that turns out to be false and all necessary precautions were taken yet it still got through somehow then that is very worrying indeed.

It appears the UK have no plans at the moment to screen people, No Ebola screening for arrivals to UK - Public Health England. Mauritius on the other hand has ordered that all foreign nationals be refused entry if they have stepped foot in an Ebola-affected country any time in the past two months.

Re: Ebola Crisis Sends Shockwaves Through The Aviation Indus

Didn't take long for the government to change it's mind on screening passengers arriving into the UK from West Africa. The BBC reports screening to commence today from Heathrow and shortly from Gatwick and Manchester. Supposedly, the passengers using these three airports account for 90% of all passengers travelling to the UK from the affected area. I imagine the other 10% use connecting flights through Schiphol and Paris CdG to other regional airports. These are to remain unscreened for the time being.

There is the possibility of a 'handful of cases' in the UK over the coming weeks but the health secretary refused to be drawn into a 'worst case scenario'. Looks as though BHX and MAN could soon be screening for ebola too.

Mr Hunt told MPs: “We think we will reach 89 per cent of people arriving in the UK from the affected countries.

“We will continue to review that and if the numbers increase and the risk level justifies it, we have contingency plans to expand the screening to Birmingham and Manchester.”

To be honest I think screening people once they have arrived is a waste of time. If you ask me travel to the UK from affected areas should be banned.

Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
