As it’s fairly quiet on Forums4Airports at the moment I’ve been having a look at an organisation called the Globalisation and World Cities Research Network (GaWC) which has been seeking to categorise global cities for over a decade.
A global city, also called world city or sometimes alpha city or world centre, is a city generally considered to be an important node in the global economic system.
GaWC based its findings on connectivity through four advanced areas; accountancy, advertising, banking/finance and law. The list also ranks city economics more heavily than political or cultural factors.
There is sometimes a debate on Forums4Airports regarding airport catchment sizes and strengths, therefore a city's supposed position in the world economic pecking order might be of some relevance.
GaWC’s latest list of global cities is that for 2012.
Alpha++ cities are London and New York City, which are vastly more integrated with the global economy than all other cities.
Alpha+ cities complement London and New York City by filling advanced service niches for the global economy.
Alpha and Alpha- cities are cities that link major economic regions into the world economy.
Beta level cities are cities that link moderate economic regions into the world economy.
Gamma level cities are cities that link smaller economic regions into the world economy.
Sufficiency level cities are cities that have a sufficient degree of services so as not to be obviously dependent on world cities.
The Beta and Gamma rankings are further divided into three parts, including + and -. Sufficiency cities are divided between High Sufficiency and Sufficiency.
There are 2 Alpha ++ cities: London and New York.
There 8 Alpha +, 13 Alpha, 22 Alpha-, 24 Beta +, 18 Beta, 36 Beta -, 19 Gamma +, 18 Gamma, 22 Gamma -, 41 High Sufficiency and 84 Sufficiency.
The UK has 14 cities listed as well as London - they are:
Beta: Manchester
Beta -: Birmingham and Edinburgh
Gamma +: Bristol
Gamma: Glasgow, Leeds and Belfast
High Sufficiency: Southampton and Newcastle
Sufficiency: Liverpool, Cardiff, Aberdeen, Nottingham and Sheffield.
This is the work of one group of academics/researchers over a fairly lengthy period. Another group might come to different conclusions.
