CAA stats May 2019

Finally published today for EXT and show that 99,060 passengers were handled in the month, up 13% on May 2018. Rolling12-month total was 972,000 which is around 6% up on a year ago.

Looking at the new Ryanair routes, these were the figures - can't establish the Malaga figures as Flybe competes on the route.

Malta: 2523 passengers, ave load 157.7, load factor for month 83.4%
Naples: 2414 passengers, ave load 134.1, load factor for month 71.0%
(because of the days of the week that these services operate there was an extra rotation to Naples in the month).

Hopefully the yields on Naples is good and that the loads will get bigger during the summer but 13% is very good growth.

EXT rose by around 11,500 passengers in May this year compared with May 2018. Apart from the new Ryanair routes to Naples and Malta, other big risers were:

Paris CDG + 2,500 (increased rotations)
Malaga + 2,500 (Ryanair joining Flybe on the route)
Heraklion + 1,300 (not op in 2018)
Zakynthos + 1,300 (not op in 2018)

There were some losers as well, but the overriding direction was up.

EXT's best ever calandar year was 2007 when it handled 1,012,575 passengers. There seems little doubt that a new record will be set 12 years later.

Finally published today and show that 106,376 passengers used the airport in June up 11% on June 2018. Rolling 12-month total was 982,000, up 6.85% on a year ago.

Published today and show that 113,032 passengers passed through in the month, up 15.4% on July 2018. Atms were up 11.8%. Rolling 12-month total was 997,368, up 8.4% on a yeasr ago.

The rolling 12-month total should easily exceed one million in August.

Published today and show that 119,990 passengers passed through in the month, up 15.2% on August 2018. Atms were up 10.7%. Rolling 12-month total was 1,013,235, up 9.8% on a year ago.

This is the first time for a decade that the one million mark has been passed.

Further to the CAA August stats, I've checked back and 2007 seems to be the calendar year that handled most passengers at EXT - 1,012,575. In August that year there were 114,046 passengers, nearly 6,000 fewer than in August this year.

The current 12-month rolling total is already more than the record calendar year so there seems little doubt that 2019 will become the latest record calendar year, short of some unanticipated substantial fall in numbers in the last three months of the year.

Published today and show that 119,990 passengers passed through in the month, up 15.2% on August 2018. Atms were up 10.7%. Rolling 12-month total was 1,013,235, up 9.8% on a year ago.

This is the first time for a decade that the one million mark has been passed.

The Ryanair factor has clearly been a big help, and with their routes to Malaga, Alicante and Malta continuing through the winter significant monthly passenger growth should occur until next spring after which monthly numbers will be measured against similar Ryanair services 12 months beforehand (it looks as though Alicante has replaced Naples next summer instead of being in addition to it).

I imagine that with Ryanair's year-round routes going through the winter we shall see further monthly gains and next summer TUI's second based aircraft for part of the week ought to continue the trend.

Published today and show that EXT handled 59,215 passengers in the month, down 7.6% on November 2018. Atms were down 11.4% and the rolling 12-month total was 1,025,496, up 10.3% on a year ago.

Published yesterday and show that EXT handled 60,664 passengers in the month, down 5.9% on December 2018. Atms were down 8.8%. The rolling 12-month total and thus the total for the calendar year of 2019 was 1,021,705, an increase of 9.7% ob 2018.

Although the the last two months have shown decreases, 2019 as a whole represents the best ever calendar year in the airport's history for passenger numbers, beating the previous highest which was 1.012 million in 2007.

With extra TUI services coming this summer 2020 should see further gains.

Yes, they had a dreadful five years with the recession a decade ago and lost over 30% of their passenger numbers, but in recent years they have made big strides forward. It has to be hoped that Flybe can stabilise and then make progress as an airline. EXT relies so much on them, although with Ryanair testing the water in the past year or so it means that the airport is not entirely reliant on Flybe for its scheduled services (Scilly Skybus apart). TUI is also expanding.

Obviously the more they can become less dominated by Flybe (not because it's Flybe but because it's never a good idea for any airport to be so reliant on one airline) the better, although that airline will still stands to play a huge part in EXT's life.

Yes Flybe is pretty dominant there. I do wonder if in the long term airports like Exeter will look to Loganair to try and lessen that dominance and any potential impact if they lost Flybe especially on the non sun routes.

If Flybe did cease to exist EXT would obviously suffer because not only is the airline an important customer, its location as the airline's headquarters, training and engineering bases would add to the problem.

It seems that Loganair and Eastern are the only likely options when it comes to domestic routes at smaller airports. These airlines can only do so much without themselves overstretching. Loganair seems to be in the middle of a substantial expansion. It's to be hoped their owners learned lessons from the loss of their other airline, flybmi.
