Well done Ian. Some shocking stats there. Bristol over 200k to Geneva and yet BHX less than half that. Sobering but at the same time there are clear targets and gaps which with the right airline and publicity be a major success.

Bristol has seen more annual GVA passengers than any UK airport outside London for the past 5-6 years. It's largely down to easyJet that goes up to 6 x daily at certain times during the ski season, plus a couple of weekly ski charters with other carriers during the season.

Im always surprised that GVA hasn't been started from BHX during the summer. All of the GVA passengers ex BHX do so from Late Dec to early April. We do have 12 weekly to ZRH so maybe Swiss aren't looking to dilute that route? (Although ZRH has been in decline passenger wise for a while now) maybe one Flybe could operate? I'm sure a daily DH4 or ER7 could work. I'm sure yield would be as good as ROT or LUX! Some interesting routes mentioned, I'm sure VIE could work (it has done with VB/BA in past) and ARN with the right schedule and aircraft, OSL I'm not so sure FR and BE have tried and numbers were disappointing. BOM would be a good bet and MCO and YYZ could surely do with more capacity Midlanders going to Florida must be travelling elsewhere to catch flights.

Apologies for not commenting sooner but the internet at chez nwoody is currently down. However, wow, thanks Ian for the insight and goes to show not only the potential unsurved markets but also the underserved markets... Abu Dhabi, Atlanta and Chicago are the standout for me!!!

What would be interesting Ian is to see the med routes. I know many here don't think they are interesting, especially when new airlines add more of the 'same old', but it was my understanding that when you compare BHX with EMA, BHX is/was vastly underserved with the bucket and spade market.

For some context, I don't live in the midlands, I live outside Leeds. MAN and LBA are equidistant from me, but BHX is a travelable distance, especially as I have family there. Whilst BHX has done great in expanding its new destination list, the main issue for me is availability and price. I go to berlin for example quite a lot. EZY fly up to 2-3 daily to berlin and now RYR is about to start also. flights, are commonly between £50-80 and as such, perfectly acceptable. BE at BHX though fill up fast and are expensive, commonly over £100.

To me, if BHX is to win back market share, not only does it need new destinations, but on popular city/beach destinations it also needs significant increases in capacity and competition!

I think there is a very important point contained within nwoody2001's post and that is the reference to BE re Berlin. I have not traveled this route but frequently fly BE Paris/Amsterdam - BHX. And he is right some of the BE routes fill up very fast; my last journey from Paris on the E195 was absolutely full.

So, i ask myself, have BE now got the right equipment for some of their busier routes, or should they now be looking at aircraft with a greater capacity ie 319s or 320s?

BE have made remarkable strides forward at BHX and if the future continues in this vein then the E195s are just not going to be big enough.

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
LBA: Albastar B737-800 EC-MUB positioning in tommorow afternoon from Gatwick 15:45 to operate a charter to Lourdes/Tarbes on Friday afternoon 14:00 AP7721 STC
I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,
