£15m plan for Airport City

Manchester Airport has unveiled ambitious plans to develop a 'mini city' on new land adjacent to the airport.

The development will see a huge expansion for retail, leisure, conferencing and commercial activities across the complex and in the surrounding area.

Airport development boss John Atkins, speaking at the MIPIM property convention in Cannes, said a £15m deal had been struck to buy 30 acres on the outskirts of the airport.

He described the deal as the 'last piece in the jigsaw'. It would be combined with the adjoining 30-acre Manchester Business Park, owned by the city council, to form the hub of a new 'Airport City' scheme.

Atkins said that core airport activities, including the terminals, aprons and runways, would grow, and they would be joined by improved cargo, hotel and logistics facilities as well as retail, conferencing, commercial and leisure developments under the 'Airport City' banner.

Sir Howard Bernstein, chief executive of Manchester city council, which has a 55 per cent stake in Manchester Airport Group, said: "it's a stunning opportunity to build on the airport's continued growth, and it is unlikely this could be created anywhere else in the UK.

"It provides us with one of the most strategic opportunities for generations, which will continue to reinforce Manchester Airport as one of the most important assets to be found anywhere in Europe."

Manchester Airport £50m overhaul complete

A £50m overhaul of Terminal One at Manchester Airport, which began four years ago, has been completed. The project includes enlarged airside shopping areas, scanners and facial recognition computers. The airport made changes which included taking advice from psychologists to help assess where travellers may experience stress before going on holiday - such as car parking, security and check-in.

Passenger flow through the terminal has been completely reworked and bosses say there are also better restaurants, cafes, lounges and VIP facilities including valet parking. The new airside retail and catering areas on the departures level is larger than the pedestrian zones of King Street and Market Street in Manchester city centre and a 14-lane security zone with an average wait of eight minutes. The tightened security climate has seen the airport abolishing shops sited before security check points.

Retailers have spent £15m fitting out 52 'airside' shops, with many new stores including Dixons, Kurt Geiger, Fat Face, Mango, Monsoon, Starbucks and SoHo. Around £14m was spent on the security zone and £3.5m on two lounges.

A new Emirates lounge, boarding area and a range of gates are to be added to the terminal, in preparation for Airbus A380 flights, which are expected to begin operating from Manchester within the next two years.

How about eating places? Are there any left before check in. We are staying at an airport hotel the night before and normally eat at Garfunkels. Does it still exist or any simliar places or have these too been moved airside?

Hi 'smokey001' welcome to Forums4airports. I have moved your post to a new thread for Airport Retail. Hopefully someone will be able to answer your question.

Manchester Airport runway refurbishment could take a year

The planned refurbishment of Manchester Airport’s main runway could take up to a year, bosses have revealed in an online video about work that will cause night flights to be diverted for several months. Simon Butterworth, head of airfield strategy and compliance, said the project could take between 10 months and a year, but could not give an exact length or dates for the closure, because of issues such as materials and methods that had not yet been resolved.

Bosses plan to shut the airport’s main runway at night next year for refurbishment, rewiring and the replacement of lights. Mr Butterworth said: ‘At the moment the real answer is that we don’t know exactly. There are a lot of variables still involved in the planning process that we’re going through with the contractors, or potential contractors.’

Manchester Airport ‘mini city’ development will happen

Plans to turn Manchester Airport into a ‘mini city’ have taken a step forward, according to John Atkins, Managing Director of MAG Developments - the property and development arm of Manchester Airport Group. Speaking to thebusinessdesk.com, Mr Atkins said the project to turn the airport from a transport hub into a standalone business destination, complete with offices, logistics, hotels, retail, residential and conferencing and leisure facilities ‘will happen’.

First announced at the MIPIM property convention in 2009, the concept of creating an ‘Airport City’ is the final piece of the jigsaw in the further development of the UK’s fourth busiest airport, with the existing airport site being combined with the adjoining 30-acre business park. Mr Atkins told the website: ‘I see this as a 15 to 20 year project. We are master planning the scale of concept and types of uses. It’s easy to look at the market today but this is a long-term project so we will invest in that. The airport as a business is used to taking long-term decisions’

‘It’s not a green field site requiring vast infrastructure and it is deliverable. The infrastructure into the site, such as the Metrolink, is already secured. People don’t realise what development we already have here – it’s not necessarily about new uses but about stretching the uses that already exist on site.’

'We are looking at the airport site differently to in the past. Not just at the 30 acres next to the airport but also how we develop hotel facilities, logistics facilities on the western side of the airport.’

Manchester Airport runway refurbishment plans confirmed

A £20m refurbishment of the main runway at Manchester Airport is to take place next year – closing it at night for eight months, the Evening News reports. The huge programme of work to overhaul Runway One will run from January to September and is the biggest runway refurbishment since the airport opened in 1938.

The original runway, currently in use 24 hours a day, was last resurfaced 14 years ago and now needs a full refurbishment to accommodate more modern and larger aircraft. The project will include resurfacing, rewiring and better lighting.

The number of flights will not be cut during the work, with night-time take-offs and landings switched to Runway Two. Planes are not normally allowed to land on the second runway between 22:30 and 06:00 but the airport has permission to use it for emergencies or maintenance.

The airport has admitted that the noise from night-time maintenance may cause disruption to neighbouring communities, but say they have consulted residents for almost two years and insist the work is ‘vital’. Today, letters are being sent out to people in Knutsford, Mobberley, Heald Green and parts of Wythenshawe to reassure them that efforts are being taken to minimise disruption and noise pollution.

Manchester Airport issue control tower building tender

Manchester Airport is inviting bids for the design and build of its new 60m high air traffic control tower. The tower, which is expected to cost up to £20m, will replace the airport's current 40-year-old air traffic control centre on top of an old office block. When completed in 2013 controllers will for the first time have a 360-degree panoramic view of the entire airfield.

Air traffic control facilities will move to the stand alone, purpose-built building, with the base housing a new equipment centre and offices. Separate contracts will be placed for the fitting out of the tower and the installation of its equipment.

Expressions of interest in the contract must be made by 13 April at http://www.airportsmart.com using the pre-qualification questionnaire available.

Re: Manchester Airport Infrastructure & Developments

Cheers for posting the image attachment world_rep, will this include more parking stands?

Re: Manchester Airport Infrastructure & Developments

Well, depending how accurate it is, it seems like there are 12 new gates, and I assume any new parking stands will be to the left of the picture, but the Airport hotel is also just to the left of the picture, so, and new stands would be directly on top of the hotel.
Depends what the master plan is.

Re: Manchester Airport Infrastructure & Developments

Work may start at the same time as the new enterprise zone, but Im not sure as I havent seen anything official.

If you look at the photo, theres a new airside link between T1 and T2, but again not sure when work officially begins.

Manchester’s Airport City to begin build in 2012

Manchester Airport is set to develop and open its Airport City next year after being named as an Enterprise Zone by the government. The Manchester Airports Group (MAG) will be working with stakeholders and authorities to develop a region of businesses close to the airport. It is hoped the initiative will allow the city to compete for business with other destinations such as Barcelaon, Amsterdam and Dusseldorf. “This announcement represents a significant achievement for the Greater Manchester region and an exciting opportunity to move forward with the Airport City proposal so that we can realise the potential for creating over 7,000 jobs, while seeing additional revenues re-invested throughout Greater Manchester,” said Charlie Cornish, chief executive of MAG. “In partnership with our key stakeholders, we will be progressing the project straight away and looking to build on this opportunity for the region.” In its first phase, the land between the airport and Wythenshawe will be developed to offer space for the University Hospital of South Manchester’s Medipark initiative and the regeneration of the town centre. Plans are to be submitted at the end of this year, with work starting in 2012.

CPRE says Manchester Airport not a suitable site for enterprise zone

Manchester Airport is not a suitable location for an enterprise zone because it will 'suck economic life away from the rest of the region', the MEN reports that a new report from the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) claims. The £400m Airport City project is expected to create over 10,000 jobs, but the study casts doubt on its overall impact. The report, by CPRE North West Regional Group, warns the Airport City scheme could undermine development elsewhere in Greater Manchester and cause a ‘prosperity black hole’.

A 60-acre site, centred around Manchester Business Park, north of the airport, will include offices, shops, hotels and manufacturing space. But the CPRE said evidence from the first wave of Enterprise Zones, launched in the 1980s, showed they have displaced businesses from other areas, rather than generating incremental growth. It also says few of the jobs established in the zones remained after economic support ended.

Andy Yuille, senior policy and campaigns officer for CPRE north west, told the newspaper: ‘There is a need to attract investment and create jobs, but looking at the prosperity of Greater Manchester and the surrounding areas as a whole, this just is not the right place to do it. It will add pressure to build on the green belt south of Manchester while taking potential jobs and investment away from locations to the north of the conurbation that really need an economic boost.’

However, Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester council, said: ‘This report misses the point of Airport City entirely. Comparing it to those of the 1980s is, at best, naive – they are entirely different beasts. This is all about creating new, sustainable jobs for Greater Manchester as a whole and in particular for the local area, rather than displacing jobs from other parts of the city region.’

An airport spokesman added: ‘We are not looking to displace investment from other parts of Greater Manchester. In fact, we believe Airport City will have the opposite effect, attracting international businesses that previously would not have located here and in doing so will support the whole of the city region, giving it a true competitive edge that enables it to compete with cities such as Barcelona, Milan, Dusseldorf and Amsterdam.’

New Control Tower

The construction work on the new tower has started at MAN.

To compliment this, they have a fab new camera overlooking the 'B' pier that takes shots every 15 minutes from 7am-7pm.

The overall aim is that once the tower is completed in 2013, they will have a time lapse image of the construction.

Re: New Control Tower

Thanks for that User001!

I think I will be visiting this quite often, to just see what is occurring in terms of aircraft movements instead of the progress on the control tower...

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
