Manchester: Infrastructure, Developments and Construction

Use this prefix for new threads for Manchester Airport
Ive read on other forums that they are thinking of demolishing T1 and rebuilding it.,and they are going to build T2 like Munich with seperate piers and have .underground walkways conecting them .I know the old pier c on T1 will be demolished because it will get in the way of expansion of T2 .And it will have a time scale of around two years.

Wow! I can't wait to see the renders now if that's what is likely to be announced.

I must say it looks good and definitely well overdue. I imagine there will be a couple of years of upheaval but well worth it for the end product 🙂

Manchester airport is going to be in the world league when this is complete with potential to compete with Heathrow.

UK’s third largest airport sets out programme of enhancements worth up to £1 billion over the next ten years
New state-of-the art facilities for airlines and passengers

Manchester Airports Group (M.A.G) has announced a 10-year investment programme for Manchester Airport that will transform the airport, ensuring that it continues to thrive as a national asset and plays an even greater role as the UK’s global gateway from the North.

The ‘Manchester Airport Transformation Programme’ is a series of 60 enhancements that will provide the millions of passengers that use the airport every year with facilities that combine a contemporary look and feel with state of the art services.

Manchester Airport is the UK’s third largest airport and the preferred choice for millions of people looking to fly. With two runways, the airport has significant capacity for growth and already serves over 70 airlines and in excess of 210 short and long haul destinations. Manchester Airport is the only UK airport outside of London with direct routes to a host of global destinations including Miami, Hong Kong, Jeddah, Singapore, Atlanta, Washington and Boston.

Manchester Airport will also play a key role in delivering a Northern Powerhouse, with the airport currently supporting £1.8 billion every year in economic activity in the local and regional economy. The airport already employs 20,000 people on site and supports a further 25,000 indirectly.

The key elements of the Transformation Programme include:

• The expansion and reconfiguring of Terminal 2, to become the airport’s primary terminal building
• Improvement of Terminal 3 to cater for increased demand and an expanding flight schedule
• The introduction of new and enlarged airside transfer facilities, including the direct linkage between Terminals 2 and 3
• US pre-clearance facility, allowing passengers to clear immigration, customs, and agricultural inspection by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) before boarding their flight
• Introduction of the latest technology in a new, enlarged security hall that will screen more passengers, quicker
• The introduction of a host of new customer friendly enhancements, including self-service check-in facilities and around 50 food and beverage and retail outlets

• Creation of a ‘future-proofed’ operational airport environment that provides greater flexibility and resilience to cater to evolving airline and security needs
• The introduction of new stands and piers, offering better departure gate facilities
• Improved surface access road system making it easier for customers to come to and from our airport

The Transformation Programme will adopt a phased approach to implementation of the improvements so as to ensure minimal disruption to airport operations, passengers and airlines. The £1 billion programme updates and re-profiles existing long term capital investment plans and reflects the Group’s ongoing commitment to maintaining its strong investment-grade credit rating.

The improvements will be delivered inside the existing footprint of the airport and are consistent with the established guidance provided by the Manchester Airport Master Plan; that growth will be phased, incremental and making best use of the existing terminal campus area.

The Rt. Hon George Osborne, MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer said:

“Today's announcement of £1 billion of private sector investment in Manchester Airport is a massive vote of confidence in the North of England and in our plan to build a Northern Powerhouse.

“The investment, which will completely transform Manchester Airport and double its capacity, will help ensure that it continues to compete with global airports across the world.

“It will play a key role in this one nation government’s plan to rebalance the UK economy and boost productivity‎ and is fantastic news for working people across the North.”

The Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP, Secretary of State for Transport, said:

“The £1bn investment in new terminal facilities at Manchester Airport shows the confidence and ambition of Britain’s airports to be among the world’s best.

“This programme of improvements will allow Manchester to help meet the UK's aviation needs in the coming decades - something that will be of huge value not only to passengers and airlines, but also in creating jobs and transforming the Northern Powerhouse’s transport links.”

Commenting on the ‘Manchester Airport Transformation Programme’, Charlie Cornish, Chief Executive of M.A.G, said: “Manchester Airport is thriving as a national asset, forming a key component of the UK’s aviation infrastructure at a time when airport capacity in the country is at a premium.

“The region in which the airport operates and serves has seen a pace of change in recent years almost unmatched by any other in the United Kingdom and we are proud of the role that we have played in driving economic growth – both across the North and the UK as a whole.

“Manchester Airport has responded well to the considerable changes in the aviation industry over the last 20 years and we have invested heavily to meet the needs of our airline customers, passengers and local communities.

“Today, we’re setting out how the airport will contribute to the development of a Northern Powerhouse and demonstrating the dynamic, can-do spirit that sums up the region. The Transformation Programme will ensure Manchester Airport plays its full part in driving economic growth and develops as a key part of the UK transport infrastructure, within a nationwide network of competing airports.

“We continue to work closely with our airline partners to ensure that their requirements and those of their passengers will be fully catered for, both during the programme design and build and upon its completion.

“Over the next ten years, the airport will continue to develop as a global gateway for the UK, directly to and from the North, and these enhancements will enable us to further adapt, modernise and transform the customer service experience we are able to offer.”

Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, added: “Manchester Airport plays a vital economic role in the region in which it serves. Its annual passenger numbers last year topped a record 22 million and it provides jobs for 20,000 people on site and a further 25,000 indirectly.

"Greater Manchester and the rest of the North West is increasingly competing on an international stage and an airport that is better suited to serving these global aspirations will significantly improve the impact the region can have in attracting inward and outward investment, helping it to realise its full economic potential and create further jobs and opportunities."

Christian Seymour, from IFM Investors, 35.5% shareholders in M.A.G, said: “As one of the largest airport operators in the UK, M.A.G has an outstanding track record of successful airport management.

“Since acquiring our stake just over two years ago, we have been delighted with the progress the Group has made in terms of implementing its capital investment plan and growing passengers and revenues. Of particular note is the turnaround M.A.G has achieved at London Stansted, transforming it into the fastest growing major airport in the country in just two years.

“M.A.G’s airports across the UK have a key role to play in meeting the country’s aviation capacity needs and today’s announcement is a strong signal of the company’s commitment and ambition to deliver on that.”

Carolyn McCall, Chief Executive, easyJet said: “Manchester Airport’s vision offers a range of opportunities for easyJet which will directly benefit our passengers’ experience and our operations at the airport.

“easyJet is committed to long term growth at Manchester Airport and the programme offers us an excellent opportunity through which to achieve this over the next decade. We look forward to working closely with the airport to maximise the design and implementation from both an airline and passenger perspective.”

Laurie Berryman, Vice President UK, Emirates said: “Emirates is delighted that Manchester Airport is committing to the £1 billion redevelopment programme. Emirates will be celebrating 25 years at Manchester later this year and now operates three daily services to Dubai and beyond two of which are operated by the iconic Airbus A380.”

***Official Airport Press Release***

Now that looks very impressive.

Does anybody know if the plans have been submitted to the local council planning department for the airport transformation work yet?

I dont think the plans have been submitted yet Aviador, but will keep the forum informed when i hear anything. All i know is that the work is due to start in 2016.

I am a New poster - I am interested in the development plans when the details emerge. I hope this is the right place for this comment as it also touches on catchment area, surface access and future routes.

MAN has potentially a big 10-20 years ahead of it, which could significantly increase it's effective catchment area and make ease of access to the airport such that it can genuinely become a hub operation (to be clear I don't think it will ever compete with Heathrow!)

Major national projects, like HS2, HS3, the Manchester-Sheffield tunnel and other more local road schemes could mean that a catchment area including Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, Nottingham, Derby,Leicester could all be within a comfortable journey of under one hour (possibly even Newcastle?)

Linking these up to the airport can drive growth both in these regions as well as at the airport its self.

It has a great opportunity to develop these markets and offer new and/or more frequent routes either as a point to point service or via hubs in other continents.

I don't know what the critical mass is for such a set up, but you would hope that this would be able to generate a significant volume of traffic similar to the likes of Munich and it would be good (and necessary) to see the infrastructure to match. I suppose all of these issues are interlinked and it would be good to see some discussion of them.

Cheers.

Welcome to Forums4airports Dobbo and yes you're in the right place for discussions regarding expansion of Manchester airport. I am sure Manchester airport can deliver what it aims to do, northern powerhouse or otherwise. It will be a fascinating time watching the airport develop over the next few years.

Thanks - I think a large amount of external factors (politics, economics) should make the next decade one of significant growth.

Some surface access updates emerging from the HS2 update today which also hints at connectivity with HS3 (which I think is now referred to as Northern Powerhouse Rail ("NPR")). The headline is that the government remains committed to a station on the HS2 phase 2 network at MAN, with the caveat that it is subject to "suitable third party funding" which I have taken to mean that they want the airport to pay/arrange.

The following document focuses on HS2:

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... d-west.pdf

9.12
Having considered alternative route approaches to Manchester, the Government remains of the view, as set out in 2013, that a route via Manchester Airport is the best option subject to third party funding being obtained. A parkway style station would help to bring the benefits of high speed rail to south Manchester and north of Cheshire, as well as creating the potential for passengers to interchange directly between high speed rail services and the airport.

9.13
This station would be well located to provide direct access from the M56 motorway to HS2, without passengers having to make their way into central Manchester to join trains at Piccadilly. It would also serve a significant business development area around the airport in the Enterprise Zone.

9.14
This is supported by Transport for Greater Manchester who say in their “Vision for 2040” strategy (2015):
“The development of the HS2 station at Manchester Airport will increase its importance as an international gateway, attracting flights to more destinations and providing an alternative to congested airports in the south-east of England. It is also likely to increase the demand for the Enterprise Zone as a business location and boost demand at the airport itself.”

9.15
The Government is minded to support the construction of a station at Manchester Airport. We will work positively with local partners, but it remains the case that the development of this station is dependent on agreement of a suitable third party funding package.

The transport for north Autumn report also indicates its support for surface access connections from the Northern Cities to the airport:

http://www.transportforthenorth.com/pdf ... Report.PDF

The initial work on NPR (Northern Powerhouse Rail) is developing the case for substantially improved connectivity between the main cities of the North, and between these and Manchester Airport.

My view is that closer connectivity to MAN from the cities of Liverpool, Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle and the East Midlands via improved surface access routes is key to the growth of MAN over the next 20-30 years taking advantage of the TP.

Rail projects like HS2, NPN together with major road projects like the road tunnel to Sheffield will help MAN to obtain the critical mass to develop as a major hub airport. Not to rival Heathrow, but as a major European hub in its own right.

Amazon are to build a large warehouse on the logistics hub part of Airport City, citing worldwide flights able to help them distribute goods from the site.

Will create 1500 jobs initially.

The T2 development looks bloody stupid.

When this T2 redevelopment was announced, Brad Miller, the MAG man behind the project said that as well as adding capacity, it was an effort to end the 'bolt on, hap-hazard' nature of MAN and have a world class facility.

So, what do they do? They 'bolt on' the extension of T2' pretty much leaving the existing parts of T2 as they are. So, it looks like a glass structure banged up on the side of T2.

What I was hoping for was for a single 'harmonious' new frontage which was all the same design, and the same for the airside aesthetics too.

Swing and a miss design wise.

What's interesting is that the plans have changed slightly.

There is a new 4th pier added according to the plans, and the T2 main body extension will happen a lot sooner than expected. Initially 2016 was going to be just utilities and new car parks only, but it seems the full whack will start right away.

I noted the new pier, but the application doesn't cover the piers which are said to be a later development.

I think we all understood from what has been said before that the western most pier would be develop[ed early and development moving east.

I am therefore disappointed with this position as I can see the piers not getting done for a long time

Comet - I don't think the Piers require a separate planning consent. Will check later and let you know.

They don't but they will not be provided yet either. Also only one net increase in aircraft stands but 2553 car parking spaces. Also it does look as though T2 long stay parking and staff west aren't going at present either.

All this is not an expansion of the airport but as they say updating it by demolishing an outdated T1and replacing it with a smaller extension to T2 but maintaining capacity as at present
