Runway checks particularly after wide bodied movements are not unusual. Those 70,000 lb engines can cause damage to the runway from time to time.

I must admit, one things that has really stuck out to me about EK is how much money they have put into promoting the start of the 380..... twitter is covered with it, tonnes of full page adds in the local new paper, banners/billboards all over the place too. great to see such an investment into bhx!

Fantastic turn out today. Was by the viewing area for arrival and the whole perimeter fence had people along it. Apparently Sheldon Country Park and the Elmdon car park were also heaving. Went up to the field by Catherine-De-Barnes lane for departure and cars were double parked all along the road. Great exposure for Emirates and the airport (y)

A photo of departure. I've got loads more I'll add to the picture thread later.

Going by comments elsewhere everything went smoothly with the first A380 flight. Considering it came in with only a couple of empty seats arrivals coped well. It also departed totally full and boarding was efficient.

The only hiccup was a technical problem with one piece of handling equipment which led to the slight delay but that could have happened anywhere at any time.

Yesterday Birmingham was as busy as I've seen it for a long time with a constant stream of movements. The A380 departure didn't appear to have caused any sort of chaos for arrivals and the runway inspection vehicle was straight on behind it.

Not quite the apocalyptic event that some elsewhere predicted (y)

There are those on a certain fruity message board who seem to have their own agendas at times. I'm delighted that things went well with the 380.

Saw EK40 departing earlier from my front window, remarkably quiet for such a monster.

Emirates have a video of yesterday on their Facebook page, Paul Kehoe confirms that yesterday's flight was overbooked and it's full for the rest of the week :)

I'm not sure if it can be linked to here.

a great video and great to hear sales are going so well! a quick check on the website suggest things are looking good!

Hi all,

My flight out from BHX to DXB last Sunday (20th) EK42 had 310 in economy and 30 in business. My connecting flight EK385 to BKK on A6-EOU had 429 in economy, 76 in business and 14 in first.....a totally full flight. Both flights on time departing and early into their respective arrival points.
Dubai a dream to transit between 7pm and 10pm. Bangkok as always...an hour at least to get out of.
Flight back to BHX on the 4th April using the EK39. Hoping for a seamless transfer and arrival.

Cheers

Karl

P.s. seems like the inaugural A380 went just fine on Sunday....congrats to BHX!!!!

Thanks for that, I hope you're having a good time? I bet the weather is better than here? :)

Looks as if EK41/42 is building nicely as that looks around 80%. Good to see a decent load in Business to.

Safe journey back (y)

There was a feature on the ITV Midlands news about the A380 coming to Birmingham - only problem was it that it seemed to suggest it was also the first time you could fly to Dubai! Poor journalism really although I suppose any publicity is good for the airport. Also mentioned the importance of India for mass travel but failed to mention there is a daily flight from BHX to DEL. I hope Qatar get some good exposure this week to really drive home the message that it's not all about London!

Heard something over Coventry this afternoon, am assuming it was the A380 as it sounded so different to anything else.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.

Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
