Bmibaby celebrates seven years of flying from East Midlands Airport

Low cost airline, bmibaby, is celebrating (07-Apr-09) seven years of flying from East Midlands Airport this week. Since launch the airline has carried over 8.7 million passengers to and from the airport. As a double celebration, bmibaby has today (30-Mar-09) welcomed passengers on its brand new service from East Midland to Almeria, and over the summer months the airline expects to carry over 28,400 passengers on this new route.

bmibaby was born at East Midlands Airport in 2002 and started operations with just one aircraft, flying to just one destination - Malaga. Seven years on the airline now has five Boeing 737 aircraft based at the airport and offers a choice of 14 destinations, with over 220 weekly flights to and from the airport during the peak summer season. This year the airline will fly to two brand new destinations from East Midlands Airport - Almeria and Menorca, and bmibaby is the only low cost carrier to fly from the airport to these destinations.

In seven years bmibaby has had a substantial impact on the local economy, creating over 300 jobs directly with the airline and many more in support services. The airline has also brought a large volume of inbound tourists to the East Midlands, and works closely with regional tourist boards and Visit Britain to drive inbound tourism to the Midlands.

bmibaby has enabled local businesses to fly to key European destinations at low fares, and in response to customer feedback the airline launched a set of services tailored to the needs of today’s business traveller. All passengers booking a flight on bmibaby can benefit from flexible flights - if a meeting finishes sooner than expected and a passenger can make it to the airport, they can catch an earlier flight home providing seats are available and it won’t cost a penny.

Alternatively if a passenger gets delayed and misses their flight, they can pay a fixed fee of GBP35 to move to a later flight providing seats are available. All passengers can also benefit from on line check in, executive lounge access, and the reassurance of knowing that a seat will be reserved for them. In addition, passengers can join the UK’s most generous frequent flyer programme - bmi diamond club. bmibaby passengers can earn destinations miles every time they buy a flight with the airline which can then be spent on over 850 destinations worldwide through bmi diamond club’s membership of the Star Alliance network.

Managing director of bmibaby, Crawford Rix said:

“We are very proud of what bmibaby has achieved in seven years of flying from East Midlands Airport. We have established ourselves as the Midlands largest low cost carrier and have continued to add exciting new routes from the region. This year we start flying to Almeria and Menorca which are currently not served from the airport. We have also recently increased capacity on key summer sun routes to the Mediterranean for the peak period and we are looking forward to a busy summer.

“The team at bmibaby are dedicated to providing low cost fares to fantastic destinations and we are committed to flying from East Midlands Airport.”

Commercial director of East Midlands Airport, Stephen Turner said:

"Over the past seven years, bmibaby have grown their route network, offering passengers from the region an excellent range of destinations to visit or travel to on business.

"This summer, bmibaby will begin operating flights to Almeria and Menorca and will increase the frequency of flights to key summer sun destinations in the Mediterranean, allowing passengers a greater choice and more flexibility when booking a summer holiday from East Midlands Airport."

[textarea]bmibaby to fill easyJet East Midlands gap

bmibaby has pledged to expand from East Midlands Airport after easyJet announced this week that it would close its base and axe flights from next January. A spokesman for East Midlands-based bmibaby said that it will add extra capacity across its network to meet the demand that will be created by the departure of easyJet.

Managing director Crawford Rix said: ‘We want to reassure the people of the region we remain committed to East Midlands Airport. As a result of easyJet’s decision to leave the airport, we will be increasing capacity over our current network over the next 48 hours, so that the east midlands market continues to have the capacity it needs. We are also exploring other opportunities to fill the gap left by easyJet at the airport.’

easyJet said this week that it was pulling out of the Castle Donington site to go to what it believed were more profitable airports. An airport spokesman said bmibaby and other low-cost airlines had indicated they could also take on eight of the nine routes dropped by easyJet. Jet2 recently announced it was moving to the airport from next spring.

I can't believe that a base pull out was the only option for Easyjet but East Midlands is bmibaby's home ground so it makes sense for them to expand and fill the void left by Easyjet.

[textarea]bmibaby launch East Midlands – Munich flights

bmibaby has launched flights to Munich from East Midlands Airport. The start of the new route has coincided with the opening of Munich’s Oktoberfest, the world famous beer festival which celebrates its 200th anniversary this year.

It is the first of two new bmibaby services to Germany from East Midlands. Flights to Cologne start on October 31. Flights to Munich operate on Sunday, Monday and Friday, with fares from £50 return including taxes.

bmibaby's managing director, Julian Carr, said: ‘We are the only low cost airline flying from East Midlands to Munich and Cologne. These new routes also offer even more new destinations to our customers from the Midlands region.’

[textarea]bmibaby add East Midlands – Belfast service

bmibaby will add an extra service from East Midlands Airport to Belfast City Airport. The airline will now offer up to 18 flights a week on the route.

bmibaby will add an extra service to its flying programme on Tuesdays, meaning the airline will operate three flights a day to Belfast during the week. This frequent flying programme is perfectly suited to both business and leisure travellers. The extra service will commence on 29 March 2011.

bmibaby also offer passengers at East Midlands and Belfast City Airport the opportunity to change their flight free of charge on the day, should their meeting finish earlier or later than planned, providing they are at the airport.

Julian Carr, managing director, bmibaby, said: ‘We want to offer our customers flexibility when they travel to Belfast with bmibaby. This additional service will mean that we will offer the most flights from East Midlands Airport to Belfast.’

With the closure of the Manchester and Cardiff bases from this autumn the aircraft will be redistributed and EMA will receive an additional based aircraft.

New routes to Chambery and Toulouse will be operated this coming winter.

I think that with all thats going on, if Bmibaby arent careful then they could shut down all together. With the closure of the Manchester and Cardiff bases, its a big gamble to just concentrate on a few bases such as Belfast and East Midlands, especially with the competition at EMA. If one base doesnt see a return, I think it could be an end for them.

Personally I think it's preparation for a sell off, offloading the non or least profitable routes and bases to make the airline look more attractive to a potential buyer.

do you think that LS would be a good company to purchase it, it already has bases at both EMA and BFS. Maybe they have made it like that for an ideal take-over for LS.

I would say so. I am sure Jet2 would like to increase it's market share at both Belfast and East Midlands. At East Midlands the airline has only just moved into there so they would be keen to expand there.Taking on board capacity from another airline such as Bmibaby who operates a similar fleet on a similar route network would work.

It would be a perfect take-over for them, aquiring another 16 733's and 5 735's(?), it really would allow them to expand and explore more options around the country.

Bmibaby Summer 2012 schedule is now on sale.

New routes from Nottingham East Midlands to:-

Corfu
Gibraltar
Murcia
Naples

Well done bmibaby :good:

bmibaby extend East Midlands – Prague flights

bmibaby has extended its seasonal winter only service from East Midlands airport to Prague until 16 April. Julian Carr, managing director of the budget airline, said: ‘This will give couples, families and groups more time to visit a fabulous city over the Easter period, when the weather starts to get a little warmer.’

In addition, bmibaby will fly to Prague from Birmingham airport this summer - assuming it is still operating by then ! This could well be changed after parent BMI is taken over, and buyer IAG is likely to close the budget airline.

Not good news to report.

But its been rumoured this afternoon that based low cost airline bmi baby will be closed down by IAG in September. This will hit East Midlands Airport quite hard as they have 8 aircraft based and currently fly 31 routes I understand..

Flybe is launching 5 routes out of EMA all of which are operated by BMIbaby, the reason there doing this? Flybe routes signal expected demise of Bmibaby airline.

No longer a rumour. As it's just now been confirmed that bmi baby will be closed down in September by it's new owners IAG.

bmi baby flights from East Midlands Airport to Amsterdam, Paris, Geneva, Nice, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newquay will all be cancelled from Monday 11th June 2012 while the airlines remaining summer holiday flying will continue to operate until September 10th.

The baby schedule for September 9th, their last day of ops. PMI-EMA will be the last ever flight :sorry:

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
