Terror as jet has to abort its take-off three times

Hundreds of holidaymakers were left terrified yesterday when their plane failed to take-off - three times.
The 355 passengers grew increasingly worried as the plane repeatedly taxied on the runway and picked up speed before the pilot braked at the last minute.
The passengers were evacuated from the Monarch Airlines Airbus A300 twice before mechanics at Gatwick airport managed to fix faults to its electrical and fuel systems.

They eventually set off on their flight to Taba in Egypt on the fourth attempt at 5.30pm - eight-and-a-half hours late.
Charter flight MON5704 took to the runway for its 9am take-off but could not get airborne, so it taxied around and a second attempt was made to lift-off.

But the same thing happened again, and the plane returned to the south terminal where passengers were escorted off.
Engineers found a fault with an electrical system on the plane. The broken component was replaced, and once again the passengers boarded.
At 11.44am, the plane attempted its third take-off. But the brakes came on again and passengers returned to the terminal. Mechanics then found a defect in the fuel indicating system.
Passenger Graham Owen, 48, a retired customs officer described the panic among passengers: 'People were saying that they simply didn't believe the plane was safe. They were demanding a new plane.'
A Monarch spokesman said the two problems which prevented take-off were unrelated and unlikely to have been dangerous.

Monarch announce Gatwick – Calabria flights

Monarch has announced new flights to the Italian region of Calabria from Gatwick airport for Summer 2011. Fares start from £219 return and are now available to book.

Monarch’s charter flights will operate weekly on Saturdays between Gatwick and Lemezia, providing direct flights to the beautiful region of Calabria in South West Italy. Famed for its stunning white sand beaches along the regions 780km of coastline facing onto the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas, the area is also home to a host of cultural delights and its Greek occupation is still visible through much of the architecture in the towns and villages.

Predominantly a mountainous region where tiny traditional villages can be found nestled into the mountainside, the region is also home to the Sila national park which is a stunning high level plain, incorporating lakes, rolling hills and woodland, making it an ideal location for walking, hiking and cycling.

Managing Director of Monarch Airlines, Tim Jeans said: ‘We have seen increasing demand from a number of tour operators this year to offer flights to Calabria and we are delighted that we are now able to do so. The service will operate from Gatwick for Summer 2011, but if demand continues to grow as expected, services will expand to operate from other bases in the future.’

Monarch announce Gatwick – Barcelona flights

Monarch Airlines has announced the launch of flights from Gatwick to Barcelona this Autumn. The flights take off on October 21, initially with a single service each day, but this increases to 11 flights a week from October 30 onwards.

Kevin George, managing director of Monarch, said the cosmopolitan city of Barcelona is one of the most popular short break destinations for UK travellers. He said: 'Barcelona attracts a broad mix of visitors for business, city breaks and leisure for beach goers. All of these customers will appreciate the convenience and flexibility of up to 11 flights per week in addition to Monarch's fantastic value fares and innovative build your own class service.'

The flights start from £36 one way including all taxes and charges (£57 return). The new route brings the total number of scheduled destinations served by the airline from Gatwick to thirteen.

I'd be interested to know how the Monarch Sharm el sheikh flights are selling having been re-introduced?

Monarch Airlines administrator KPMG has just lost its High Court battle for the rights to sell the landing and take-off slots the airline held at its 5+ UK bases at London Gatwick, London Luton, Manchester, Birmingham & Leeds/Bradford.

They were expected to sell in the region of £60 million, with the likes of British Airways, Norwegian, Easyjet & Wizz Air all reportedly interested, but the slots will now be put back into the slot pool and reallocated by ACL (Airport Co-ordination Limited)

Looking at the 'other forum' regarding these slots someone mentioned that a potential carrier that should be looking at these slots is Jet2. Personally i don't see them heading to the south of M25 just yet but be interesting to watch.

NB: Think it is someone wishing to see Jet2 expand into LGW rather then fact.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
