The weather forecast is rubbish to say the least for tomorrow. Some interesting landings.

I flew into Manchester last night with Tui from Palma de Mallorca, got a tad choppy as we made the turns over the Peak District and into the approach with a fairly hard landing. It did get a bit quiet in the cabin on final, followed by some more nervous passengers applauding once the wheels were on the ground, but nothing too bad given the gusts coming in.

2 diversions to MAN from LBA this morning. FR152 from DUB and FR2333
from Krakow due to crrosswinds I imagine.

Our EK20 that diverted to BHX on Wednesday, finally left MAN just after 17.30 yesterday. Was showing as EK20 on FR24. (UAE1C).

Thursday's flight was still on the ground at 22.00 also showing as EK20. FR24 and Flight stats not giving any update as far as I can see. Did it actually depart and if so, wouldn't it be under a different call sign for ATC?

After the mishap, MAN has taken 4 divs including the first 3 after the runway was closed.
FR2311
EZY047
LS186.

Since then, just LS272, plus FR3580 which actually refiled for MAN from Beauvais.

I think 3 x Jet 2 have gone to EMA, 2 to BHX and 1 to NCL

It's MAN's turn for disruption today. R23R closed - reason unknown to me - and long holding delays for R23L as we've no fast turn offs or parallel taxiway. Two a/c diverting away that I've noted so far to EMA and BHX. There may well be more until R23R re-opens

Will they ever construct a parallel taxiway for that runway, because in cases like yesterday really can't be used to the full and caused a lot of disruption
I'm sure I've seen a plan showing a parallel taxiway. Is it shown in the airport masterplan?

It was considered I believe at one stage in the initial planning for R2, but it was going to be too costly. for the number of times it was likely to be used for arrivals on R23L.
I may be wrong but was there an issue re the extensive work and tunneling that would have been required relating to the river Bollin?

The situation only happens very occasionally if R1 is blocked for some reason, or a temporary hole appears.
R2 sometimes has to be used at night if resurfacing work is being carried out on R1, usually in winter or at least outside the summer peak.

When it does occur during busy periods though, it does cause problems as arrivals on R23L require back-tracking a fair distance to get off the runway. I stand to be corrected but I think separation of arrivals is something like 20 miles in small batches of 2 or 3, bearing in mind there will be departures to get away as well. It doesn't help that there is no ILS on R23L. From the other end at least 05R has Cat1 ILS, which is the landing runway when easterlies prevail and dual runway ops are in force.

Whether the decision not to have turn-offs at the SW end and a parallel taxiway, if maintenance or resurfacing of R1 becomes a major project, will be regretted, remains to be seen.

The only thing I've noticed in the master plan and in this next phase of works is a dual taxiway system, flexible aircraft stands and a new pier. Shame the land use plan hasn't been updated to show the current plans unless I've missed that.

Fun and games yesterday afternoon and evening with numerous go-rounds and diversion both into and away from the airport due to high winds. No "live reporting" as it was our works do". Foul night that caused few issues on both tram and train lines with things getting trapped in overhead powerlines and very heavy rain

LH946 went to LGW
FR6880 went to NCL
BRO330P went back to STN
AF1168 went to LHR
BA1398 went back to LHR
EI3328 went back to DUB
BY2699 went to EMA
U2706 went to GLA

But...
KL1549 came in from LBA

Those were quite understandable diversions as MAN by then had started to get gusts of 40 knots or more and the wind had moved round 20 degrees or so to 270 or 280. MAN also suffers more than some airports from wind shear when the wind is from that direction, exacerbated at times it's been suggested by the location of Olympic House relative to adjacent buildings, creating a sort of wind tunnel. Others can probably explain it better.

What must have been frustrating for the passengers was the early diversion of a ryanair about 14.10.
The metars before and after gave winds of 16 or 18 knots at 250 or 260, degrees with no gusts . The ryanair from DUB went around and initially turned south as if to go into the DAYNE hold, but instead climbed, turned north and headed for Scotland (EDI I think). All preceding and succeeding aircraft at that time landed ok first time.

Given it was a somewhat unexpected diversion, I wondered if it was maybe just a positioning flight or whether it was in fact carrying passengers.

It must have been taking City as it arrived around 7am today departed to Luton just after 10am. Cutting it a bit fine given the game is a 2pm kick off

Manchester sure is uniquely placed weatherwise. Lets hope you don't have another tornado to spoil the fun.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
