Agreed Aces; it may well make no difference but there must be reasons why HAL are trying it whatever the reaction of the airlines turns out to be.
As for the necessary frequency and size of a/c, isn't this where code-sharing may have a part to play? I suppose
flybe or Logan air feeding BA long haul would be a possibility but even that might not be successful given, as you say, the other hub options available from some of the smaller airports. Liverpool and Newquay might be airports that could possibly benefit however.
