Agreed Aces; it may well make no difference but there must be reasons why HAL are trying it whatever the reaction of the airlines turns out to be.

As for the necessary frequency and size of a/c, isn't this where code-sharing may have a part to play? I suppose
flybe or Logan air feeding BA long haul would be a possibility but even that might not be successful given, as you say, the other hub options available from some of the smaller airports. Liverpool and Newquay might be airports that could possibly benefit however.

Virgin wouldn't have to operate it themselves. They'd probably just go into partnership with Flybe. Flybe also codeshare a lot of other airlines and have small enough aircraft for say 3 to 4 daily flights to LBA or NQY or MME or EXT or MAN to work. There is also Easyjet who might well want to add more point to point capacity from places like Belfast and Glasgow and with there Worldwide service may want to replicate what they are doing Gatwick.

Agreed Jerry. Was suprised Virgin used A320s BUT even these didn't work on main trunk routes. What chance Teesside etc

It's nothing new. The London tat is in all WHSMITH airport shops throughout the UK. The London red bus among other things. What would they put in there for Manchester though, mini Betham towers and rainbow flags?

Not forgetting Alan Turing from Manchester, who worked at Bletchley Park, his Enigma Machine saved the country in WWII. Unfortunately the thanks he received was persecution for being gay. The rainbow flag should be proudly waved for him.

Turing's legacy should indeed be more widely celebrated. Just a factual correction though: the enigma machine was the German cipher which generated the secret military codes. Turing worked on technology to break those codes, notably on a groundbreaking 'computer' called the bombe. He led the 'Hut 8' team at the Bletchley site. It is estimated that the work of the Bletchley codebreakers shortened the war by two years and saved 14 million lives. There are several other names from that era which deserve higher recognition as well.

Following WW2, the Bletchley Park site was eventually passed down to the Civil Aviation Authority who used it primarily for the training of ATC engineers. The grounds were filled with old radar heads and navaids. I had the good fortune to be sent on a two week familiarisation course there early in my career. At the time, the historic role of the site was still top secret ... the public (myself included) had no concept of what had gone on there. My accommodation was in one of the huts! Several huts were derelict ... you could just wander in them ... little did I know! In retrospect, I'd love to know the hut number used for our accommodation, but I very much doubt it was one of the historic ones. What I do recall clearly was that the site was littered with signs warning of a photography ban, and threatening dire punishments (including execution) for divulging secret information from the complex. We thought these signs highly amusing, as our course wasn't secret in any way. Now we know that those signs were a relic from the war years ... they had never been taken down.

I recently visited Bletchley Park again. It is now an excellent museum, and the wartime role of the site is public knowledge. When I mentioned to my friend and fellow visitor that I'd done a course there years earlier, eyebrows were raised! Must be some unlikely '007' James Bond figure! Sadly not ... just a lowly CAA staffer back in the '80's! But I do feel very privileged to have explored the grounds there in the site's semi-derelict state before the significance of those run-down huts was common knowledge. It is great to see them restored and appreciated now.

In The i today says London receives 3 times more than the North. I can't remember the name of the transport minister but apparently he has just approved extensions to Crossrail hot on the tail of electrication cancellation in the North. ' Northern Powercut ' id call it !

As regulars will know, I've had a couple of lively exchanges with User myself in the past, but I for one would be very sad to see him lost to the forum. In our case, I think we both take impassioned on-topic debate in our stride! In the case of Dobbo, I must have missed the exchange in which he was involved in controversy. I'd always had the impression that he was an enthusiastic, positive and well-informed contributor.

I hope that the F4A 'parole panel' will bring us good news soon!

Not widely reported but the Scottish Parliament left APD unchanged in their budget annoucement last week. It was widely expected that they might have reduced it by 50% but the topic was.....
