Icelandair to return to Glasgow Airport

Following the decision earlier in the year to suspend flights from Glasgow Airport due to worsening economic conditions in its homeland, Icelandair has announced that it is set to resume operations on August 27.

The airline has a 60-year history of operating flights from Glasgow, transporting passengers from the airport to the unforgettable Icelandic capital of Reykjavik. Its return to operations will see twice weekly flights to the destination resume this summer.

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: "This is excellent news for anyone interested in visiting this historic and fascinating country. The strength of the pound against the Krona means that Iceland now offers real value as a city break destination.

"With its world-class restaurants, lively nightlife and superb natural attractions, Iceland is one of the must-see destinations of 2009."

To mark the return of the route, Icelandair is offering a three night city break in Reykjavik from £249 per person, including flights and four-star accommodation.

Icelandair relaunch Glasgow flights

Icelandair re-launched its service from Glasgow on Thursday, with two flights per week to / from Iceland - one return flight each Thursday and Sunday. On September 25, flights will increase to four flights per week - one return flight each Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

The four flights per week starting September 25 will operate as a ‘triangle route’ using the following routing: Reykjavik (KEF) – Manchester (MAN) – Glasgow (GLA) – Reykjavik (KEF). The schedule fits into Icelandair’s ‘hub and spoke’ system, allowing passengers to connect onwards to its North American destinations including Boston, Halifax, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York City, Orlando, Seattle and Toronto. The connection times to North America are short, resulting in elapsed flying times comparable or better than the competition, spokesman Hjörvar Sæberg Högnason said.

[textarea]Direct Glasgow – Iceland flights take off

Direct flights have taken off between Glasgow and Reykjavik, Iceland after Icelandair axed its flights from Manchester. The airline last operated a direct Glasgow route three years ago, but schedules were changed in November 2008, when the airline decided to fly passengers to Glasgow via Manchester.

The move was welcomed by Glasgow Airport’s commercial director, Francois Bourienne, who said: ‘Icelandair’s re-introduction of direct flights to Reykjavik is great news for our customers. It will significantly reduce the travel time both to Iceland and onwards to North America. I have every confidence it will prove successful and help boost passenger numbers.’

Icelandair’s new flights from Glasgow will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Thousands of Scots fly each year to the Icelandic capital to catch connecting flights to Halifax and Toronto in Canada and a number of US cities including Boston, New York, Orlando and Washington DC. Next year Denver will be added to the list of US destinations.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
