Dubai, 20 December 2017 – Emirates today announced that it is to launch a new daily route from Dubai (DXB) to London Stansted (STN) on 8 June, 2018. With its strategic position close to the tech and pharma hubs of Cambridge and Peterborough, Emirates will be the first Middle Eastern airline to operate out of the popular North East London airport.

The daily route will be operated by the airline’s new three-class Boeing 777-300ER offering customers 6 seats in First Class, 42 in Business Class and 306 in Economy Class. The aircraft is fitted with its game changing, fully enclosed private suites in First Class, as well as refreshed Business and Economy Class cabins.

Outbound, flight EK33 will depart Dubai at 09:30hrs, and will arrive in London Stansted at 14:10hrs. On its return, flight EK34 will depart London Stansted at 21:10hrs and arrive in Dubai at 07:05 the following day.

To be honest, Stansted seems the next logical step for Emirates. With 6 daily A380's to Heathrow and 3 to Gatwick, plus new slots at those airports becoming rarer, there's not much else Emirates could do to expand in London - plus Stansted serves a large area of East England that currently lacks a link to one of the ME hubs.

The most surprising thing for me is that they're using aircraft with First Class, and the fact it'll be on the ground for 7 hours at Stansted...

With Primera and now Emirates launching flights there, is Stansted becoming a realistic option for long haul flights in the future?

There are several Premier league clubs and Championship clubs near enough to Stansted to warrant it. West Ham and Tottenham and Watford come to mind for the Premier League and Norwich City and Ipswich town for the Championship come to mind.

Prem football clubs tend to charter aircraft for their trips.

Interesting that it's a 777 and not a 380. Only 6 first class suites? EK 777-300ERs normally have 8. The press release speaks of 'new' 777-300ER aircraft being used so presumably they've reduced the number of F suites.

Even Emirates would be pretty bold to open a new destination with an A380. Can Stansted regularly handle an A380?

Thanks for that Coathanger. I guess STN's runway at over 3,000 metres is sufficient.

As for the suites, I note the new ones are in a 1-1-1 configuration instead of the 1-2-1 of the old pattern. This means that a couple travelling together will be separated. Currently, the two suites in the centre have a dividing wall that can be lowered to convert the two suites into a double when required.

I was thinking more about when they go on their own personnel trips or their family do, considering many are very wealthy individuals.

Could be although I suppose STN is also regarded as a London airport.

I believe that the average price of a packet of 20 cigarettes is around £10. So if someone smokes 40 a day that's over £7,000 a year. A 60 a day smoker would be paying over £10,000 annually.

When you consider that a first-class fare from the UK to, say, Australia is in the region of £7,000-£7,500 with the likes of Emirates, Etihad and Qatar it puts into some sort of context what is available to 'ordinary' people. You don't necessarily have to be super wealthy to smoke 40 or 60 cigarettes a day. The same applies with flying first-class occasionally. It's really a choice of how different people want to spend their money.

I actually never considered it like that. I used to be a heavy smoker but quit at least 5 years ago now and definitely feel the benefit health and financially wise. I suppose that what i used to send on cigarettes now i've saving to go see my girlfriend in the US.

I meant more as in taxiways, stands and terminal. I suspect if Emirates want to send an A380 there they won't hide that from Stansted, whom I'm sure would be happy to invest what they need to to handle regular A380's.

Although couples travelling together will be split up, the middle seats have 'fake' windows that use cameras to project live images from the outside!

Recent LF's have been consistently over 90% and there are already rumours of a 2nd daily flight.

Emirates have finally confirmed that it will resume its Dubai-London Stansted route from August 1st 2022. Starting at first 5 weekly flights and in September/October it should increase to daily flights.
