Expert calls for Plymouth railway link to Exeter Airport

I don't know what he is an expert in but the retiring head of Devon Chamber of Commerce is calling for a rail link from Plymouth to Exeter Airport.

He believes that even if Plymouth Airport re-opens in the future it won't have the connecrtivity that EXT enjoys. He described EXT as Plymouth's 'local scheduled airport'.

It's an interesting thought but, even though the Exeter-London Waterloo railway line passes within a mile or so of EXT, the cost of a link would be substantial and probably not justified given EXT's current volume of passenger numbers.

Does the London service stop at Exeter train station? If so why not a shuttle bus?

It wouldn't be so much the London service for Plymothians but the one from/to Plymouth. GWR and Cross Country operate a decent frequency between Plymouth and Exeter. Exeter has two rail routes to London: the GWR route via Taunton and Reading to Paddington and the South West Trains route via Honiton and Salisbury to Waterloo.

There is a regular Stagecoach bus service between Exeter St Davids railway station and Exeter Airport that runs hourly for the most part. It's not a dedicated airport service; it's the service beween Exeter and Exmouth and takes about half an hour to cover the section between St Davids railway station and EXT.

As I said earlier, I struggle to see that the expense of constructing a rail link could be justified until EXT becomes very much busier.

Looks like a lot of wishfull thinking with the train route. Looks like trying to run b4 it can walk.

Increased frequency on the bus service between Exeter and the airport. Stagecoach route 56 operates between Exeter St Davids Station, Exeter city centre, Exeter Airport and Exmouth.
