There will be a stop enforced if lightning is within the area. All groundstaff are not allowed to work outside if it's in the vicinity. I'm guessing aircraft won't be allowed to land or depart if it's over the airfield as well.

Judging from the arrivals and departures pages on the BRS website, aircraft still appear to be landing and taking off. Where I live about nine miles from the airport the storm has passed, with some sun now poking through the clouds. The thunder was very loud during the last hour though and the rain heavy.

The summer strike season has started

French ATC on strike from 7 pm tonite until the weekend, with more strikes planned for the summer.

Maybe we need a new thread on strike action so the info is not buried within this thread and can be a useful resource to frequent flyers or holiday traffic.

It's a good point but rather than create a separate thread, I'll edit all entries that show cancellations resulting from industrial action (where we can be certain of the reason) so that they are shown in red. In that way all cancellations will still be recorded in a single thread but it will be easier for those interested to identify those resulting from industrial action. When I'm away from the site for holidays etc I'll retrospectively edit the relevant entries into red on my return.

So far only easyJet's Toulouse flight has been cancelled. I'll do an update in red this evening to include all cancelled flights - hopefully there won't be any more.

Re my previous post, unfortunately there have been several further cancellations later in the day, due to the French ATC industrial action. This is the full list as far as I can determine, although the airport website is not as fully comprehensive as FR24. Where there is a discrepancy I've taken the FR24 information.

EZY6139 to Toulouse at 1045 due to arrive back at 1450 as EZY6140
EZY6089 to Mahon at 1655 due to arrive back at 2215 as EZY6090
EZY6035 to Madrid at 1750 due to arrive back at 2300 as EZY6036
EZY6029 to Barcelona at 1825 due to arrive back qt 2330 as EZY6030

FR8244 to Palma at 1755 due back at 2325 as FR8245

The airport website shows TCX1969 due to arrive from Corfu at 1405 as cancelled, well it sort of does because the airport website also shows an expected arrival of 1705. The outbound is shown as operated to Corfu in the morning. FR24 also shows the inbound as cancelled but the aircraft that flew the outbound from BRS this morning is shown as returning to Gatwick from Corfu. It might not be connected with the industrial action and might just be early season aircraft positioning.

Two easyJet rotations cancelled today.

EZY566 to Newcastle at 0700 due to arrive back at 0935 as EZY565
EZY6041 to Palma at 1005 due to arrive back at 1525 as EZY6042

It's likely that the same aircraft was due to operate both routes and so there might have been a problem with the aircraft or crewing issues.

There were three easyJet rotations to Palma today, albeit one had left earlier than the cancelled departure. There were also three easyJet Newcastle rotations today with the other two later in the day. Whether there was room on the other flights for passengers on the cancelled ones is a moot point. It's probable that not all could have been accommodated.

The early morning easy jet flight from NCL diverted to BHX this morning.The flight no was EZY 565 and was due in at 08.05 They called a emergency as they smelt burning in cockpit.The aircraft was a A319 reg no G EZNM. The pax carried on to BRS by coach. The aircraft still on ground in BHX.

According to FR24 the return flight to NCL left at 1406 using an A320. I'm not sure from where it was sourced. According to FR24 its last work was yesterday operating Athens-Bristol. If that is so it had a long 'rest' this morning before heading to GeordieLand.

The airport website is still showing the 0700 EZY6287 to Heraklion this morning as cancelled but is showing the return as having arrived during the afternoon. FR24 shows the outbound operating as well, leaving BRS about 20 minutes late this morning. It would seem another error on the part of the website arrivals/departures pages, and I thought they were becoming more reliable in recent weeks too.

Industrial action-related cancellations shown in red

The Italians are fast catching up the French in their national sport of going on strike. Italian ATC is staging a 24 hour strike today.

The following easyJet flights have been cancelled as a result

EZY6231 to Naples at 0620 returning as EZY6232 at 1240
EZY6189 to Pisa at 0720 returning as EZY6190 at 1225
EZY6185 to Rome Fiumicino at 1210 returning as EZY6186 at 1805
EJU3361 from Venice MP at 1425 returning as EJU3362 at 1455

EZY6177 to Olbia at 1025 returning as EZY6178 at 1555 operated

Ryanair FR8240 to Venice MP at 1805 returning as FR8241 at 2305 operated, albeit the outbound departed BRS 65 minutes late.

These were the only flights scheduled to Italy or Italian territory today.

The BRS website arrivals and departures pages appears to be having problems. Nothing sbown after 1915 hours this evening regarding 'expected arrival time' or 'landed'; neither is there anything shown re 'boarding', 'final boarding' or 'departed'.

Industrial action-related cancellations shown in red

More industrial action tomorrow - this time home-grown. Air traffic controllers at HIAL airports are taking industrial action on 23 May.

As a result the easyJet EZY394 from Inverness at 1355 is shown as cancelled. The outbound EZY393 currently has no remarks against it but as the inbound is cancelled it's a good bet that the outbound is too!

The 787 has always operated direct to Sanford. It has only ever been the Cancun route that requires a fuel stop at times.

One of the several reasons that the Qatar CEO gave for discarding BRS for his airline's ME route from Severnside was the runway length.

Given that the 787-8 never seems to have a problem with Sandford, typically carrying 40 more passengers than Qatar's maximum seating on their 787-8s with a consequent increase in hold baggage, that particular reason always surprised me as Sandford is considerably further than Doha with the presumed additional fuel weight into the bargain on the US route.

There might not be much freight on the Sanford flights but would the freight differential be that significant? I'm thinking weight not commercial opportunity for freight which is another factor altogether.

So if TUI can fly their 787-8s to Florida non-stop why couldn't Qatar fly theirs to Doha? I can only think it's a question of differing airline policy but I still scratch my head as to why that should be.

According to Qatar Airways the runway was too short for them. Different operational standards and no doubt the Welsh government and cargo were all factors in Qatar choosing Cardiff.

KL1049 from Amsterdam due 0850 and return KL1050 at 0930 both cancelled.

A post in the BRS AF/KLM thread says that the aircraft was a Boeing 737 that was en route but then returnrd to AMS when overhead the Home Counties. The reason is unknown as far as I'm aware.
