Manchester Airport to launch private terminal, offering “Private Jet experience” on commercial airlines

Manchester Airport today revealed plans to be the first major UK airport to open a private terminal, which offers passengers a “private jet experience” while flying on commercial airlines.
The airport is today releasing preview designs of the new terminal, which will be called PremiAir. The PremiAir experience will be available to purchase for passengers irrespective of class of travel or the destination they are flying to – and prices start at £50.
There will be a number of different services available depending on individual passengers’ preferences. It will be entirely separate to the existing three terminals at Manchester.

The intention is that PremiAir should offer a premium service to a wide range of passengers, whether they are travelling on business, for a special occasion or simply want to add a touch of luxury to their trip.

Passengers using PremiAir to depart from Manchester Airport will kick-off their journey in style, with a range of special services. They include: a personalised welcome, speedy baggage processing, an elegant lounge with complimentary food and drink, and a dedicated security channel. They will then be driven straight to their plane in a private car transfer.

Passengers arriving back into Manchester will also be able to use PremiAir, either as part of a round trip booking or as a standalone service. They will benefit from a car transfer direct from their plane and use of a dedicated passport control service. They will also be able to relax in the PremiAir lounge while their luggage is returned personally to them.

Inside the PremiAir terminal, there will be a range of spaces designed to cater for different needs, ranging from individual travellers to larger groups.
The new PremiAir terminal is situated away from the existing terminals, just two minutes’ drive from the M56. Secure parking will be available for those who drive to the facility. As well as easy road access, passengers using PremiAir will benefit from reduced walking distances, as the total walking distance from arriving at the terminal to the aircraft door will be under 20 metres (65 feet).

“It is something a large number of customers have been telling us for some time they would be interested in and we hope the services it will offer will appeal to a wide range of passengers, whether they are travelling for business, want to mark a special occasion or just want to add something different to their experience.

“The launch of PremiAir at Manchester Airport is the beginning of an exciting new project for MAG and we plan to assess opportunities to introduce it at other airport sites in the future. At MAG, we are always looking for new and innovative products to improve the passenger experience, and PremiAir is a significant addition to our portfolio.”

No other major airport in the UK offers an accessible private terminal option for passengers on a ‘pay as you use’ basis. Such facilities are often restricted to business class and first class passengers or certain airlines, typically at significant additional cost.

Construction work is now underway on a site next to the Runway Visitor Park, where the new terminal will be sited. The existing Runway Visitor Park buildings will not be changed. The facility is due to open in mid-2019.

It is the latest investment by MAG in transforming the customer experience at Manchester Airport. The £1bn transformation of the UK’s third largest gateway continues at pace, with the first phase of the project set to open in April this year. This scheme will see new piers and car parks developed and the latest technology installed to deliver a smooth and efficient journey for passengers through the airport.

“PremiAir will add another dimension to that, giving all of our customers the opportunity to tailor the airport experience to their own personal preferences, adding touches of luxury at affordable prices.”

The PremiAir terminal is designed by Jacobs.

If we were watching the same programme then you are referring to the Royal Suite on the south side at Heathrow. This is for royalty and government use only.

Will this effect the aviation viewing park? In particular the viewing mounds which are popular for the photographers amongst us.

It's believed that the area fenced off near the mound may be the site for the terminal but it's not been confirmed.

My guess is that the fencing on the RVP side will now be removed and the building footprint enlarged into the are around, and possibly including, the mounds. Access to the site can then be made from landside.

There must be an existing planning application for this work somewhere.

TAS reports that a larger fence has/is being put up the mounds will be wiped out by this, suppose it is wait and see what the RVP do if anything .

According to TAS, it is going to be built where the mounds are and the viewing park will remain open during the works and afterwards. There will have to be some kind of spectator facility as the VP is an income source for the Airport.

The more I think about this, I can't see it working. Obviously, MAG do, but who is going to pay £50+ when they probably haven't paid much more for a ticket. Do they park their car at the Terminal? How do they board/disembark the aircraft as most will be on air bridges? If they are going pick up luggage and arrange passport control then it could be worth it to save time and hassle, but how much will it cost? What will be the quality of the build if it is going to take less than 3 month to build?
Just my thoughts and hopefully they will stimulate debate.

What will be the quality of the build if it is going to take less than 3 month to build?
Just my thoughts and hopefully they will stimulate debate.
I would imagine the largest number of users will come from passengers flying long haul business, so an extra £50 isn't much more on what can be a multi-thousand pound ticket.

As for how do they get to the aircraft, I know some airlines in Europe use chauffeured cars to take first class passengers to the aircraft (there's a pick up point basically beneath the first class lounge), and they climb the stairs from the ground up to the airbridge then onto the aircraft.

The press release(s) say that security will be done just before you go to the aircraft. So in essence the entire lounge at the private terminal is landslide. When it comes time to board you will be called forward and escorted through a "private" security channel. The nice thing about this is that iff you use the terminal for arrivals you will be able to use the lounge while waiting for your luggage and ground transportation. I would also imagine that where available they will not use the access stairs on the jet bridges, but the stairs and lifts in the pepper pots. This is a drier nicer experience. Obviously, not all stands have these facilities, but many do/will.

If I am paying a few grand for a long-distance flight and for a long trip an additional £100 might not be a big deal. I would imagine that parking is of the 'meet & greet' variety. You will hand your keys over to the attendant, the car will either be taken away or left on sight depending on how long you are away. If it is done correctly, the car will be waiting for you to pickup on return.

From the press my guess is that this will work a lot like the Upper Class wing at LHR for VS, at least on departures. You provide them info on you arrival, e.g. number plate, and book parking if required. When you arrive you will be greeted by an agent and escorted into the building. Your luggage will be tagged, probably locally scanned, and taken across to the relevant luggage sorting site for loading. You will then go into the lounge and relax until you are called to security. From there you will go immediately to the car to be taken to the appropriate stand. Then it is up the stairs/into the lift, and onto the aircraft. My guess is you will be one of the last to board.

On arrival I don't have clue how they will separate you out, but it will probably be an agent with a sign either at the aircraft door, top of the jet bridge, or bottom of the stairs. Luggage will have to be identified somehow and brought over to the terminal. You will get back in the car, go to the private terminal for immigration and re-enter the lounge to await your bags.

I wonder where the chauffeurs will be sourced?

I presume the road system will take you from there around the perimeter to T3.

Are they private owners working directly for MAG or a company?

Interesting idea for the airport - I must admit I don't mind paying extra to make the whole traveling experience a bit more easy going. Now I'm in my mid years of life I've found paying for 'meet and greet' parking and even lounge access from time to time is a nice 'treat' but only if the price is reasonable. - £50 isn't a lot to pay for that but I don't think those prices will be around for long if it proves popular.

Now I'm in my mid years of life I've found paying for 'meet and greet' parking and even lounge access from time to time is a nice 'treat' but only if the price is reasonable. - £50 isn't a lot to pay for that but I don't think those prices will be around for long if it proves popular.
A lot of these things become really nice when you are travelling with family too. M&G is so much better than remote parking, and for most of the trips we do much cheaper than a taxi to and from the airport. For shorter trips the multi-story car-parks work well too. Lounges start to make sense if you are going to spend a fair amount of time in the airport and actually eat food and drink things (the concessions are quite expensive). Keep in mind £50/person is probably just in or outbound, this won't include parking. Keep in mind that the current prices for things (random 6 March @13:00):
  • Fast track security – £5
  • Fast track border – £5
  • Escape Lounge – £24-26 depending on terminal
  • 1903 Lounge w/ Fast track security – £35
So you are only talking £15 extra for the chauffeur, personalised check-in & security. This is believable, but I would expect they will have some sort of revenue management in place.
